I say this as someone who enjoys unconventional relationships in media, i.e. ‘toxic yuri,’ and often see people who have watched the same thing and try to view it in a morally purist way, and I feel that becomes especially complex when the toxicity is something along the lines of codependency.

I could go on and on, truly, about the whole abjection theory thing when it comes to things that should or should not be emulated, and the purpose of depicting relationships that transcend our morality, but I find animosity toward relationships with a beneficiary to be very interesting. Obviously any codependency that encourages suicidal tendencies in either partner is questionable, but I see people reject storylines where one character must be present in another’s life to enable or catalyze personal growth.

I will use Caitlyn and Vi from Arcane as an example because seeing responses to them has somewhat inspired this thought process. In a recent interview, Amanda Overton said (not verbatim) that Vi is what keeps Caitlyn grounded, and that repairing their relationship/reuniting is what drives Caitlyn to realize that her position has become corrupted. Many people have stressed, “but what about the importance about Cait coming to that realization on her own?” And I think there is something to be said about the way that kind of ‘dependency’ is perceived as *bad:* The lack of independence in that discovery is wrong because there is little prioritization of the self. I wonder though if someone with a more communalist mindset would look at her development with complete indifference. Even if some people don’t see it as a morality issue, I have seen perspectives of it being an entertainment issue—it would have been more interesting if Caitlyn rediscovered herself without such a strong Vi influence. Why? I hypothesize that it’s because we all have this implicit individualism ingrained so deeply within us that we crave watching our favorite characters climb to the top independently and conquer development like one would conquer the corporate ladder.
