Evening Slippers | c. 1885-1890 | French
The unusual color and material suggest that the shoes were custom made to match a garment.

obsessed with the era of historical fashion between the 1860s and 1870s where aniline dyes kept being invented. you can find some absolute fucking eyesores of dresses that were only made that way because “acid magenta” was invented last month and it was trendy.
like this iconic gown:

or this one from the 1870s in aniline purple and aniline black:

or a trendy yellow and black gown from c. 1865, perhaps?

feel free to reblog with additional eyesores (affectionate) that i might have missed

If you're still taking requests, I would love to see some real mauve--as in the aniline dye that's BRIGHT purple. Or other really BRIGHT examples of colourful and garish clothes from the part of the Victorian era when aniline dyes were first exploding onto the market and people were going CRAZY about them. Clashy colours, all the trims in the shop, etc etc. It's just so exuberant and joyful! It may look ugly to us now but ppl were just so excited so to me it's beautiful for that reason.
Queued some purples for you! I'll keep looking for other bright clothes with aniline dyes, it was actually really interesting looking into this! You can read a little more about it here if you're interested :)

honestly I think a lot of attendees really nailed the theme this year! there were a lot of suits and suit-inspired clothes but that was to be expected - I also feel like we saw soooo many more interesting suits and not just a black suit or a white suit.
What is the THEME? Because your gala posts are flooding my dash and all I see are suits and boredom.
“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Exploring importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, and it's arranged by Black dandyism. Dress code for the Met Gala tonight is "Tailored For You."

Janelle Monae looks like the steampunk protagonist to Jodie Turner Smith's steampunk professor antagonist. I need that YA book series.
