Only Good Intentions
“What exactly am I supposed to be looking at here?” The empress mused, staring down at this frail man from atop her throne. Clad in rags mired with filth and bleached from the sun, the scraggly human feebly held what seemed like a clay jar in his hands. Cracked, red as rust with fissures creeping around its otherwise seamless side. A homemade one from the lower echelons. Of little quality, but undoubtedly a lot of hard work put into it. Either way, Baozhai had no time to appreciate the fine arts of homemade pottery. She merely raised an armored hand, waving at the peasant to proceed with his little presentation. Nodding, the peasant opened the top of the jar before turning it upside down. A large clump of dust fell onto the otherwise impeccable marble floor. Baozhai waited for something else to fall out. A magical artifact, a mangled body limb or even something so mundane as a simple plant. But alas, twas nothing but dust.
“… Is this some kind of joke?” The tall woman mused, almost as if she were talking to herself. The scraggly man could feel the lady’s piercing gaze cast down upon him, even though they were yards apart. “I really must have my visiting policies revised. Lest the entire clan is lead to believe my time can be wasted so freely.” Baozhai growled, her index finger scratching against the side of her helmet rapidly. “Ma’am, pardon me for being so bold. But this isn’t dust, it’s dirt from farmlands in the south, mine included.” The man stated plainly, clinging tightly to the jar in his hands, as if it were his only shield against the imposing empress. However, Baozhai did not seem angered. On the contrary, she slowly rose up from her throne, gradually making her way down towards the man with hand underneath chin. Her normally fierce amber eyes were calmer and more analytical than usual.
The man cowered, flinching prematurely, as if expecting some sort of retaliation. However, no blade or even a swift smack to the face came. Instead, the woman merely crouched down near the dust. Holding up a small pile in her armored hands as she let it slip between her fingers. “You said you’re from the grasslands, yes? Strange, the desert hasn’t reached that part of the region yet. Plus the land thrives off the leftovers of Carmine Chaparral. The accursed jungle some of my kin live in.” Baozhai mused, staring at the dust with increasing intrigue. The man felt a dry lump form in his throat as he struggled to form words. Eventually, his stomach twisted and turned so much, he could wait no longer. “It’s the Landorus. He has been demanding offerings or “tithes” as he keeps insisting it should be addressed as such. But with the war going on, we could not keep up with his demands!” The man proclaimed, stammering somewhat as his nervousness was all the more apparent. Yet, all Baozhai did was take off her helmet. Revealing the beautiful woman on the inside as she placed a hand gently on the frail man’s shoulder.
“Tell me, what is your name?” The woman asked. The farmer seemed hesitant at first. Only to swallow before blurting out an answer. “Jebidiah, ma’am.” Baozhai smiled, her usually cold face warming up as she stared into the man’s eyes. “I see. This unruly thief has been robbing the land of nutrients, hasn’t it?” The empress inquired, only for the farmer to nod their head silently in agreement. “I must thank you for reporting this to me. A civilization cannot fight on empty stomachs, no?” Baozhai laughed, she seemed to have an almost motherly attitude, though Jebidiah seemed to laugh anxiously at this unusual display.
“Tell you what. I’ll send an entourage of my finest mages to your farmstead and see if we can’t persuade our stubborn cloud riding friend here if he can’t ease up on his demands just a little bit. Now you go on your merry way, Jebidiah.” The armored ruler said in a light tone, gently pushing the farmer towards the steps that lead down her immense ziggurat. She even waved at the man as he descended from her palace, that is, until a voice chimed in behind her. “Must you really be so cruel like that? Our mages are anything but diplomatic.” A tall, lanky figure stated, stepping out from behind the throne Baozhai had perched herself on not too long ago. Baozhai ceased her waving, her warm smile quickly withdrawing to the cold face Xun had been all too familiar with.
“The farmers need not worry, we’re doing them a favor more than anything else. The Chetvins have always been a simple, prosperous people. They pick no sides and provide surplus to all, so long as the coin is provided that is. Tell me, does this man speak the truth, though?” Baozhai inquired, turning to face her favored rogue with hands behind her back. Xun offered a simple nod. “The Landorus used to be quite the good samaritan. Yet his prices skyrocketed and has become more cruel as of late. Now they can barely scrape by. Their lands are becoming increasingly barren, plants wither and livestock starve. They won’t make it long at this rate.” Xun stated with a blank look on his face. Baozhai slowly nodded her head. “I see. I suppose it’s another Legendary we’ll have to deal with, then. And another small clan that will owe its allegiance to us in the end.”
———————————————————————————————————-
“Baozhai? Baozhai, wake up!” Cried Xun’s voice. The Cofagrigus suddenly drew her blade, ready to pierce his throat. Yet she stopped just of his face, how the taller ghost just stood there, brows creased and a slight frown forming on his face as he offered a hand to the shorter woman. “Bad dream, I take it?” The rogue inquired, Baozhai said nothing as she quickly pulled back her blade, sheathing it as she stared at the ground. “I cannot say for certain, all I know is that it felt quite real.” The undead empress mused. Yet Xun merely rolled his eyes. It has been over a thousand years since they last met, yet she was as secretive as ever.
“May I ask why you disturbed me?” Baozhai inquired, her brows heavy with exhaustion as she stared at the area around her. Reversal Mountain, like most elevated locations, had been utterly riddled with snow during the winter. There had been rumors this mountain was once an active volcano. If so, there was no doubt this giant of a landmark’s prime days were long past. Their route had also take them on the eastern side of the mountain, near Undella Town. Yemir had told Baozhai how winter had left the town largely barren due to a lack of tourists. How fortunate for them humans were quite lazy creatures in this day and age. Last thing they needed were any unwanted encounters with the humans.
“It seems our passage through the mountains haven’t gone completely unnoticed. I’ve only caught glimpses of it. But, it seems we have a spy following us. This individual is roughly your size. Carries a large sword, almost impractical for its length. It was wearing a cloak, but, I could see its eyes. There was a sense of something sinister to them. Should I pursue?” The rogue asked without hesitation. Baozhai merely rubbed her forehead, eyes narrowed as she stared at Xun. “No, whoever this is, we aren’t aware of their motives. It would be best to stay here, lay a trap for our mysterious friend… And Xun? Make sure Yemir doesn’t know of this. Hui and Guo have done a good job, keeping an eye on her. Last thing we need is for her to chase away our prey.”

A Follower’s Faith
“You didn’t have to be so rude about it, you know. Plush selection is a very delicate process.” Haos told Baozhai, somewhat displeased he had to abandon his lovely conversation with Nysa. “I know David is-” “You know nothing about David.” Baozhai snarled, glad she was free from that stuffy museum for once. “Arrogant man, to have the gall to act so high and mighty around me. I’ll have Hui hold him down and torture him slowly next time we meet.” The Cofagrigus growled. Haos merely sighed, he knew the empress would not discuss it openly with him. Such a stubborn woman. Considering her background, the Gothitelle wasn’t surprised in the least.
“Well, all that aside, at least seeing your old followers should cheer you up, no?” Haos inquired, a question that suddenly pulled the empress from her anger. “You have thought up of a story, no? I would hate to think all my time perusing was all for naught.” Haos huffed, knowing all too well the complicated backstory behind Baozhai’s reasons. “I have, I take it that if they’ve remained loyal all this time. It shouldn’t be too difficult to convince them of my reasons. And no, I don’t take them to be idiots either, there are reasons I selected them to be pillars beyond mere strength.” Baozhai murmured, still lost in deep thought.”
“And pray tell, what exactly is your story?” Haos asked, only to get a confident grin from his associate. “Now Haos, what fun would there be if I spoiled you now? Have faith in it as much as I would~” The Cofagrigus chuckled lowly, all Haos could do was sigh. “No, I suppose there wouldn’t be. Heaven’s know what would happen if we had our story together.” The Gothitelle went silent, knew there would be no use in arguing with Baozhai any further. For now, the psychic simply wished to enjoy the silence while he still could. It was rather curious. A dapper gentleman, a product of the finer things in the modern world traveling alongside with an empress of the ancient times. Strong, cold, and above all, proud. A finely honed weapon, ready to carve through her enemies in a moment’s notice. To the outsider, such a pair walking together would be most queer. But to them, it was as natural as breathing.
They remained silent for hours, Baozhai never questioning where her smaller compatriot led until eventually, one could hear what sounded like heated bickering between a gruff man and a smartass with nothing to lose. Haos gestured at Baozhai to remain behind and silent as he went forward. Unsurprising to the Gothitelle. His esteemed colleague, Jarvis had gotten into a rather coarse argument with Guo, the warrior of Baozhai’s posse.
“Fer the last time, I ain’t apologizing to that lovey dovey bitch!” Jarvis spat, glaring at the other ghosts. “I didn’t ask for any goddamn sympathy! Next time she touches me, I’m ripping off one of her fingers.” The Gardevoir spat, not at all intimidated by Guo’s imposing presence, even as the armored specter loomed over him “Hui may be a kind fool, but the moment someone threatens our honor, I will not hesitate to destroy you.” The large ghost growled, only to be further irritated by the drunken Gardevoir’s challenging face. “Yeah, what good is honor to the dead? You keep waitin fer yer beloved empress. I’ll be next to my ‘luggage’, waiting for that jackass to return.” Jarvis snarled, walking slowly towards the area Herald slumbered. Guo was on the verge of stomping over and flattening Jarvis to the ground, only to be restrained by Hui, shaking her head no. “It’s not worth it, Guo. We knew we were taking a chance. Perhaps it would be best if we just-”
“Leave?” The Gothitelle interrupted, walking in with an apologetic look on his face. “Goodness, had I known I was keeping you waiting for so long. I would have hurried. Apologies.” Haos bowed in a humble manner. But Guo wasn’t having none of it. Stomping up to Haos, the large ghost’s face had contorted in an expression of impatience and anger. “You would have us wait? No, I will not suffer your insolence anymore!” Guo yelled, his voice shaking the air as he stomped towards Haos, fist ready to pummel the Gothitelle. Haos showed no sign of fear or hesitation, even as Guo coiled his arm back, ready to slam his fist into the Gothitelle’s face when a voice suddenly boomed out before him. “Guo, cease your hostilities at once. You’re embarrassing me in front of a dear friend!” Guo froze in place, his pupils shrinking as he and the other two followers could hardly believe what they were hearing. Lowering his fist, Guo slowly turned to see a face, altered by death, yet retained the fierceness and pride that engraved in his mind, even after all these years.
Baozhai stood before them, her crimson armor with gold trimmings complimented by the lovely amber eyes adorned on her smooth face. The very symbol of beauty and power. “... B-Baozhai?” Guo asked, hardly able to believe what his supernatural eyes witness right before him. He seemed out of breath, faltering, ready to fall as he stumbled, only for Baozhai to catch him effortlessly. “It’s y-you… It’s really you.” For once in a long time, Guo’s hardened features had softened, his old heart ready to burst as tears formed in his eyes. Placing an armored hand on the empress’s face. It was exactly as he remembered it. Unmarred by age or scarring. “W-We thought you lost… We thought…”
“I know, my faithful wall.” Baozhai whispered, comforting the weary ghost, only to suddenly find herself surrounded as Hui and Xun kneeled before her, tears welling in their eyes. Baozhai sighed, gently letting go of Guo as he joined with his compatriots, showing their loyalty, as well as their feelings of delight, as well as remorse for all the long years Baozhai was missing from their side.
“My followers… Ever so faithful.” Baozhai stated quietly, kneeling down to each one, lifting their face up and staring into eyes filled with both joy and grief. “Long have I been missing from your side. Long have I been absent from leading my people to glory. No longer.” She said, her once quiet features becoming more powerful and inspiring. Her followers rise up, energy filling into them as they seem more like their former selves. They had so many questions, Baozhai seemed keenly aware of this as well. Raising a hand. “I know you have many questions for me. Rightfully so. And I shall enlighten you on our way to White Forest.” Baozhai stated simply. Her followers were about to cheer, only for confusion to strike them completely. Xun stepped forth, hoping to understand the reason for this.
“W-White Forest? But, we are to return to Sheidal region at once! Our clan is in great peril and without your return, I fear-”
“I am aware of the danger that threatens our people.” Baozhai interrupted, her face stern and unfeeling, returning to her leadership role felt so natural, even after all these years. “However, they are resilient, and even after a thousand years, they have endured. And I will return to them as soon as possible. But more important events demand our attention. I would not pursue them had I not deem them important. So… Will you trust your empress to lead you once more?” Baozhai inquired, her stoic expression emotionless as she waited for them to respond. After staring at each other with some uncertainty, they stared back at baozhai and nodded their heads in agreement.
“We will follow, our beloved empress.” They respond flatly in unison. Smiling, Baozhai was more than pleased. “Your empress is pleased. Now, Haos, if you would so kindly teleport us? I wish to have this matter resolved as swiftly as possible. My people have waited long enough.” Baozhai demanded with some authority. Haos rolled his eyes. Not even five minutes and she was already trying to run the whole show. “Very well, allow me to gether Jarvis and my sister and I shall… Oh dear.” Haos muttered, his expression troubled as Baozhai loomed over him with an unamused face. “What’s the matter, Haos. You will teleport us, will you not?” The Cofagrigus growled. Tapping his fingers together, Haos had an embarrassed look on his face as he sweated a bit. “Well, this is humiliating. But it seems something is blocking me from teleporting there. I’m not sure what, but it seems our way is barred.” Haos replied, doing his best to ignore Baozhai’s growing anger at this turn of events.
“What would you have us do, walk over to Whiste Forest? That is a three day journey from here at least!” Baozhai growled when Haos’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Ah yes, a walk would be most excellent. Jarvis, hurry and up and gather Herald, will you? We have much ground to cover!” Haos called out, the only response he could hear was a large groan as he could only assume Jarvis had heard him. Walking forth with a spring in his step, he paused, turning back to look at Baozhai and her subordinates and gesturing at them to follow.
“Well, come on now! White Forest won’t come to us.” The Gothitelle responded with a cheery expression as Baozhai pinched her brow in frustration. Hui walked up to Baozhai with a silly look on her face. “So, this Haos is a dear friend of yours, huh?” Baozhai hung her head in humiliation for a second before lowly muttering “Yes, yes he is. I’ll fill you in on what happened while I was gone. Three days will be sufficient enough to explain how the last thousand years have went for me.” Baozhai grumbled as she started to move forth, her followers sticking to her side. Having just been reunited. They’ll refuse to part so easily any time soon.
Thus, the long journey to White Forest had begun.

Baozhai could pick up on the Dusknoir’s suspicion towards her. The Cofagrigus could only assume Adeline had told or at least hinted at their lovely little encounter together, brief as it was. How irritating. Baozhai detested those who suffered from being naive, and this Dusknoir was no worse. The empress could sense blind loyalty emanating from Erastus.
“Why is it my business? Simple, I like to prepare for... Unseen complications. Whisper is the very definition of one, after all. Such a wily and unpredictable ghoul. I’ve seen the trouble she’s caused and I’d rather anticipate rather than remain ignorant. Who better than one who still bears scars from previous conflicts with her?” Baozhai went silent, making note of the uncomfortable and dare one might say even unnerved look on the ghost’s face. Whisper clearly left an impact on Erastus in more than one way.
Baozhai raised a brow at the Dusknoir’s mention of his master experiencing rather frightful dreams involving, despite Adeline’s alleged faith in Whisper. How misguided. Yet Baozhai couldn’t help but chuckle lowly at the Dusknoir’s accusations that she might know something they didn’t. She could just taunt the Dusknoir and leave, but knowing the Dusknoir and his master’s misguided sense of loyalty and justice. They’d likely attempt to locate the sibling’s, maybe even track her. Just what the phantom needed, misguided youth meddling in her affairs. Haos also detested interruptions or eavesdroppers to a severe degree, so Baozhai rather not deal with that. An angry Haos is a scary Haos.
“Hmm, I could, but what fun would there be in that now?” Baozhai laughed as she lightly patted the side of Erastus’s face with one of her hair hands before turning around. “I do appreciate you indulging my curiosity. But alas, my compatriot is waiting for me and I do hate to keep him waiting. Though, if you really want to learn about the family’s current whereabouts, I heard Saffron City is nice this time of year~”
A simple lie, but an effective one as Baozhai hoped it would at least keep the meddlesome human off her back for a while.
"It's been a while since I've heard from the titan's extended family. The one called Adeline." Baozhai inquired in front of Erastus. The Cofagrigus still managed to get a few inches off the Dusknoir as she stared down at him with a determined face. "Tell me, have you ever prepared yourself for the possibility of Whisper's return? I've heard you two shared an... Unpleasant encounter towards each other. I know of your master's uncertainty towards the ghoul as well. Must complicate things, no?"
Erastus tensed at the appearance of the empress. He wasunfamiliar with her face, and yet, she knew of his trainer. The wraith couldrecall the times Adeline had mentioned another being living with Yemir and theothers, and judging from her tone, she did not seem to like her very much. Forwhat reason, he had no clue, but it made him wary of her. “…and why is thatyour business?” He spoke calmly with a hint of caution. Considering he had noidea what she was capable of, he did not want to instigate anything. However, when she questioned him about Whisper, his entire demeanor changed.
“Whisper’s… return?” The arch of his eye rose. He had heardof the tattered gardevoir’s departure, yes, but he never thought much of it.Adeline made it sound like she would be gone forever and that she was doingsomething for the better good. But what wassaid something, and what actions did it entail?
Baozhai’s mention of their confrontation in the far pastcaused a chill to course through him. Clenching his fist, he recalled how her darktendrils ripped through his back, leaving it a shredded mess by the time he hadmanaged to escape with Adeline in his hold. Eventually he learned that theevent was at the fault of Sinaldo, who had been in possession of her body backthen. And yet, even after his spirit had been purged from her, she seemed tocommit more atrocious acts afterwards, supposedly without her knowing. It wasonly sometime after Gregnas’s death did Adeline’s view change, and he had noidea why. His eyelid lowered as he mulled over these thoughts.
“I… yes, it does.” Erastus spoke slowly. “Adeline has alwaysbelieved in her even after certain incidents. But a long time after Whisperleft, she started having night terrors and saw her figure attacking her in herdreams. I don’t know what this means. Is there something she knows that Idon’t? Or… perhaps, is there something youknow?” He looked directly into Bao’s eyes, gaze growing intense. “We haven’theard anything from the family in a long time, so it’d be appreciated if somethings were cleared up.”

There were few times Baozhai struggled to hide her contempt from someone. David, however, was such an individual. Such arrogance for a mutant. Though whether he was some reject born of magic or an abomination of nature, Baozhai hadn’t the slightest inkling. Nor did she care.
Though she did raise her brow at his mention of being in a industrial think tank. The particular part about being the leader of the genetics division stuck a chord with Baozhai. Why wasn’t she surprised? “Feh, you have the gall to accuse me of never changing. And yet here you are, a thousand years later. Most likely up to the same twisted schemes as you were back then. I can only wonder what your ‘compatriots’ would think if they found out about your sordid past? I bet they wouldn’t be happy~” Baozhai chuckled lowly, her eyes filled with such passionate cruelty towards David.
“We’ve done things. Horrible, irredeemable things that the gods themselves would spit upon us for. But that’s where our similarities end. I would murder a thousand children in a heartbeat if it meant the survival of my kingdom. I would do anything... Anything to ensure they endure. But I never hid that terrible truth. Not from my followers. And certainly not from my enemies. I AM a horrible being.” Baozhai’s voice lowered to a deadly serious tone, her gaze never breaking from David, not even for a moment.
“But you? You’re a butcherer hiding his face behind a pleasant mask. When you tear open your victims, you merely whisper words of comfort into their whimpering husks as their humanity bleeds out. The promise of progress as piles of broken bodies lay behind you. A savior who brings nothing but ruin in his wake. You may have your friends fooled. But time. As we both know, reveals all secrets. And it’ll be a matter of time before you fumble as well.” An unnervingly pleasant smile spread across Baozhai’s face, his concerns of her goal made all the more obvious as she returned to her prideful demeanor.
“Oh come, David. It’ll be like old times~ You, running in the sand, a look of fear and dread on your face. Me, standing by Hui’s side. Her body trembling as she struggled to suppress her rage. Body twitching. Just waiting for that one word. That single command that would unleash her unending wrath upon you. At least you can’t accuse me of never giving you a chance. It’s the only reason you’re here, after all~” Baozhai seemingly amused herself, almost as if she heard a good joke. Slowly standing up, her illusionary image faded away, exposing the armored specter for what she truly is. “It has been fun, David, truly. Recollecting upon ancient history is so... Invigorating.” The Cofagrigus grunted as she stretched a bit before walking nonchalantly past him. “But we’re both busy people. And standing idly by, filled to the brim with vacuous conversation simply isn’t suited for us~ Though, I would get a move on, if I were you. Hui may be closer than you think~” Baozhai laughed in such a callous tone. Ignoring the trembling guard who scrambled to call security.
“HAOS! We’re leaving.” Baozhai yelled, her powerful voice booming across the museum halls, startling what few visitors there were as the Gothitelle poked his head out of the gift shop. A few plushes in his arms as he could not decide which one to buy. Baozhai silently motioned for him to follow. Looking confused, Haos noticed David and rushed up to him, before handing the human an Aerodactyl plush. “Here, you can keep this one.” Haos said politely before rushing out the door. Leaving David to his own devices.

Though Baozhai didn’t show it, she seemed a bit annoyed how the hybrid answered one of her questions, yet seemed to deliberately avoid the other one at the same time. Nonetheless, she showed some degree of intrigue as Keiko displayed one of her abilities. Not out of fascination. But rather for future references. Just in case things get messy.
Yet, this mischievous creature truly tested Baozhai’s patience. Her hand trembled a bit, despite the calm composure her armored form would suggest. Fingers twitching ever so slightly towards the hilt of her sword. Ready to swing in an instant. At least she would if the sudden presence of a Gothitelle huffing right behind her came into view. This well dressed man seemed a bit out of breath. Clutching onto his umbrella and cane as if his life depended on it. “Baozhai, you really must slow down one of these days. My stamina isn’t quite what it used to be!” The Gothitelle huffed a bit, though he seemed to notice where Baozhai’s hand was positioned. Turning his attention to where his pupil’s gaze had settled upon. It was a rather peculiar looking hybrid. An elegant mix of Ninetales and Lucario. Behind her was a rather odd looking Audino and “Oh, my word. Momoko, was it? Goodness me. We seem to just be meeting up in all sorts of places.” Haos laughed jovially as he subtly smacked Baozhai’s hand lightly with the tip of his cane. Making the former empress narrow her eyes at the smaller Psychic type.
“Ah, I must apologize for my friend’s behavior here.” Haos chuckled, staring ever so calmly into Keiko’s face with his deep purple eyes. “She is, how should I say, prideful to a point? Doesn’t like help from anyone. Heavens know I tried!” Haos laughed as Baozhai glared at him with an indignant expression plastered on her face. Causing Haos to flinch a bit. Tugging at his collar a bit, he returned to his normal demeanor. “But as lovely as it would be to have a tour guide lead us through such an... Interesting place. Perhaps it would be best if we went our own ways, yes? Unless you’re insistent about the dangers present in this wilderness. In which case, I’m sure someone as spry and versatile as yourself wouldn’t mind two additional tourists, no?~” Haos inquired, calm and pleasant as ever.

Zarathos@Bao: "So..." the dark knight muttered, sizing up Bao with a low, cold voice echoed behind his expressionless mask, " ... you bore the title of empress over your followers of old, as I've gathered. Your people appear to be heavily centered around might... to be able to lead them seems nearly unfathomable." Zar boldly stated, yet still curious. "Tell me, what grants one the pretigious right to lead such titans? And your duties, what did they entail amidst this formidable culture?"
“My, aren’t I the popular one today? At this point, the disguise is worthless.” And with that, Baozhai’s human image wavered and dispelled. Showing a Cofagrigus whose golden frame mixed well with the now crimson interior she had been working hard for. She looked like a proper empress, built for war. Her fierce amber eyes filled with pride.
“You are correct, my clan has always gone through the simple doctrine of might makes right, for that is what nature has intended, no? And I suppose I can’t blame you for thinking that. Before I took over, everyone thought I was weak, frail. So easy to kill. And there lays your answer. Might. The power to lead your disciples, to rush into battle and lay your life on the line as much as they would. And to accept any challenge, no matter who it is.” Baozhai put both of her arms behind her back in a formal manner.
“Much like my father before me, I had to defend my claim to the throne, even before I was a teenager. Everyone thought I was so easy. But fortunately, my mother’s brutal teachings instilled all I needed to survive any would be assailant. For you see, when it comes to the matters of the throne, everyone is eligible.” Baozhai had a rather malicious look on her, relishing all the times she tore apart those who would do her harm. “Anyone can challenge the current ruler to the throne in combat. Naturally, whoever wins, gets the throne. Whatever allegiance the other subjects had is quickly discarded to suit the new ruler, should they win… And I murdered every single one.” Her teeth started to show a little, the bloodlust in her eyes starting to become apparent as the past rushed through her mind.
The rules for an emperor/empress are simple. You are the first and last line of defense to your kingdom. All enemies are to either be eradicated or assimilated. To tolerate the enemy is weakness. To sympathize. Heresy. One must assign the three pillars of combat worthy vessels. The kingdom comes first, it’s survival, crucial. Conflict is the driving force of change. Without it, we’re good as dead. All other priorities are left for the followers to decide, from economy to entertainment.” Baozhai shook her head, the memories more vibrant than ever. She stared at Zarathos, her eyes filled with such power, such longing for battle once more.
“I’m sure you know what it’s like, to persist for so long… To feel as though your existence is incomplete… I can see it in your eyes. They’re much like mine…”

(OPP)Daivd could not believe his eyes when he saw his 'former empress'. He could only imagine what the now spectral ruler had been up to. "Bao!" The human(?) gave a jovial smile, one that also knew this was not going to go peacefully, but he wanted to see where this would go. "I'm surprised to see you here." He wanted to make a crack on her being a fossil among other fossils, but that was beneath him. "You see anything here that brings back memories? For me I love the old Sinnohan pottery."
Of all the individuals Baozhai had expected to see today, that abomination in human form certainly wasn’t one of them. However, that didn’t stop her from having a polite conversation. Even if she wasn’t fool enough to let her guard drop near the man.
“Ah, it has been some time, hasn’t it?” Baozhai smirked with a cruel grin, even as David rambled about the ancient pottery. “Yes, we’ve seen quite a bit in our time, haven’t we? Some might say time has even changed us a bit. Were it a thousand years ago. I would have decapitated you on the spot, little good as it would given your unique... powers.” She said with a faint hint of familiarity mixed with disgust.
“Tell me, what sort of crazed endeavor have you gotten yourself into now? You were always good at blending in with societies, even becoming successful, loathe as I am to admit it.” Baozhai asked with a genuinely curious tone. And though she had no intention of fighting the man here in this museum. She did fully intend to tell Hui, one of the few people the Cofagrigus knew the man before her had some fear of.

The male Gothitelle observed Baozhai with an unwavering firmness to his sharp eyes. Clearing his throat to state his presence, Nori gave a bow to the Cofagrigus; given her collected and powerful composure, this was a deeper and slightly longer bow, out of respect for those of higher power. Once upright, he held his hands together in his sleeves. "Konbanwa," he greeted, as it was evening, "... so I've heard you were missing from your empire for quite some time. For what reason, if I may ask?"
Baozhai was peering into one of the museum display cases, utterly bored out of her mind as she waited for Haos to buy her whatever plush he would decide. Probably an Omastar, knowing him. Fortunately for the Cofagrigus, an unexpected visitor put her boredom to rest, at least for the time being.
She would be surprised he found out about her true identity if it weren’t for the fact this particular individual was a Gothitelle. Letting out a sigh, she knew her problems were likely just beginning. “I suppose my reputation precedes me. Not many people with proper manners these days. Good.” Baozhai said in a soft tone, though her eyes narrowed a bit at the Gothitelle’s question.
“Why was I missing? Simple. The empire had fallen. My people dead, reduced to undeath. Why linger in the past? My presence would have only further ingrained them in their servitude towards me. I figured a fresh start is what we all needed... It seems I’ve been mistaken.“ Baozhai’s face faltered, if but for a second, showing a glimpse of something much sadder. “They’ve been clinging to hope, even after all this time... I swear they’re too loyal for their own good. But if they want me back, I will not deny them that.” Her face hardened back into her usual cold stare. “Now if you’ll excuse me, unless you have any more riveting inquiries to ask. I have a date with the nearby Aereodactyl display... Annoying little bastards.” The Cofagrigus grumbled as she slowly strode away.

(( Reblogging over here. ))
A little meeting
The port of Slateport City has always been known to bustle with the humdrum of commerce, ever so lively. Large mobs of humans would often gather at the assorted fishmongers, clamoring for the exquisite seafood that laid bare before them. The sun shined brilliantly in the sky, the warm sea breeze wafting through the air, ever so gently skirting across people’s faces. Not that they had the time to appreciate such a small grace of nature. Well, all but one, that is.
A human female, proudly sporting a vibrant red dress that flowed like her long black hair with sunglasses casually strode through the crowd. Her skin had a light almond color to it, smooth as silk, yet hid the muscles of iron beneath them. Not broad or bulky, but firm and strong. Showing little care in the world at those who gawked at her towering height. Indeed, this was a woman that men lusted for, both power and beauty wrapped together ever so delicately. And though she enjoyed the occasional flirting, this human had more important matters at hand. Keeping her eyes peered out, the female seeked out a particular building. The Oceanic Museum, to be precise. A rather large building, it wouldn’t take long for its location to be found.
Sure enough, the female came across it, as large and tacky as ever. How revolting. Letting out a sigh, she could only muse at how wretched a spot would serve as the established meeting spot. Not wishing to waste any more time, the tall female strode confidently towards the museum, begrudgingly handing over the fee to gain entrance. As fate would have it, today was a slow day. Nary a soul in sight, aside from the occasional tourist, mouth open like a Slowpoke or the patrolling Museum guards, eternally bored out of their minds.
Having nothing better to do herself, the woman waltzed up to one of the more prominent displays. The ancient remains of a long extinct pokemon, a Kabutops. Though, considering the human has beared witness to a small handful throughout her travels, perhaps extinct was no longer accurate. Before she had any time to appreciate the skeleton, an all too familiar voice called out behind her.
“And here I thought you were above using magic to disguise yourself, Baozhai.” Turning around, Bao couldn’t help but shoot a snarky grin at the Gothitelle before her. The dapper clothing, the wizened cane and peculiar umbrella. But above all else, those two piercing purple eyes. “Ah, Haos, as if you’re one to talk.” The former empress retorted, hands on hips. Haos could only tug at his neck collar a bit. “Hardly. Appearances are necessary to maintain these days. Mine is a matter of importance, yours is a matter of pride.” Haos scoffed, seemingly amused at Baozhai’s comment. There was a brief pause before both broke out into a slight chuckle, walking up to each other and embracing in a gentle, yet light hug. After a moment, they quickly broke it off with warm smiles.
“Since you’ve shown yourself the way, would you care if I give you the tour?” Haos asked, bowing slightly as he pointed the tip of the umbrella towards the western wing of the museum. Bao could only give an exasperated sigh. “We’ve been doing this every year since this place opened. It would be rude for me to decline, even if I’m well acquainted with the entire establishment, my mentor~” And without another word, both began their brief tour, side by side.
They were silent, quietly admiring the various exhibits. From fossils to details about the ocean and its ecosystem. It wasn’t long before Haos spoke up. “Do you know why I like the ocean so much, my protege?” Baozhai shook her head no, the empress never did have much interest in the ocean. She showed concern in much more solid state of affairs. Her attention only averted for a second before returning to Haos, who seemed to be waiting ever so keenly. “It’s vast, mysterious and as beautiful as it is dangerous. What dwells there, even the deities that preside over us, remain ignorant to the unseen horrors slithering just out of reach… You know who I’m referring to, don’t you?” Baozhai merely smirked grimly in response. “How could I not, master? The Nameless Ones. Abominations that, despite all their power, the ever so gracious gods of our realm either ignore or remain oblivious to… I believe you said your father’s sovereign job was to preside over their jail cell?” Haos merely laughed, staring intently at the fossilized remains of a Omastar. “Knowledge is a terrible burden, my friend. It can lead to great prosperity, or even greater despair. Mortals go insane, gods shrink in fear. This world… This universe is ever so delicate. I’ve come to learn that much. In the blink of an eye, everything you know could vanish without even a warning. Perhaps if I knew now, I wouldn’t have done what I did back then…” Haos muttered with a somber tone, only to be startled by Baozhai’s rather cruel laughter. One that sent a chill down his spine.
“Nonsense, we are who we choose to be. For even you, with all your gifts and foresight, could not prevent the atrocities that lay bare on your hands. On all our hands.” Staring down at her hands, Baozhai clenched them tightly, angered by the illusion she had cast upon herself. “Embrace who you are, let your sins drive that needle ever closer to your heart. Knowing one day, it could end in a brutal display.” Haos paused, pondering the Cofagrigus’s words, if but for a moment.
“Tell me, did you know some of your old followers are still active? Seems like they’re determined to find you, even after all these years.” The Gothitelle expected silence, but to his surprise, Baozhai responded, though her tone was deadly serious. “Yes, they’ve been waiting so long. I shall reward their patience-” “-Even if you’re undeserving of said patience, no?” The Gothitelle interrupted, a calm look in his eyes. Baozhai went silent, her eyes narrowed as she felt inclined to retort, but no words slipped from her lips. Haos decided to continue the conversation. “Did you know they’ve searched five different regions for you? Despite your clan’s penchant for warfare. I must admit, they’ve been surprisingly diplomatic in their quest. No bloodshed, hardly a bruise here or there… Makes you wonder what a thousand years of undeath can do to someone, no?” At that moment, Haos stepped unnervingly close to Baozhai’s face. The ghost’s powerful amber eyes narrowing behind those thick shades as her master’s eyes glowed ominously.
“I know why you are truly here, Baozhai. And while some may applaud you for returning to them, others spit upon your very face for abandoning them. I suggest you withhold on your imminent arrival, if but for the time being.” The Gothitelle held up a card in front of Baozhai. Baozhai seemed hesitant about picking it up, but Haos’s urgent expression lent her some strength as she swiftly picked it up. It held the picture of a monstrous being, wreathed in white flames. Its towering silhouette encompassing the entire forest it wrought unspeakable brutality upon. And yet, it seemed familiar to the empress, who studied it intricately as Haos continued. “I would like you to return to where Yemir is located. I sense something… terrible.” And yet, Baozhai shot her mentor a look of bewilderment. “Yemir? Please tell me you’re joking. That brute is so… No, she can handle herself. Let her drown in misery a while longer.” Baozhai spat, offended that Haos would even suggest putting Yemir’s safety before her people. Before she left, Haos strongly gripped her by the arm, his expression anything but joking. “I would not waste your time if I did not think this was something insignificant. I must confess… Yemir. No, that entire family. They worry me.” Gripping his cane tightly, he stared at the ground.
“The futures of mortals and gods, the stars lay them bare for me to see, especially once death is near. But those three? I see static, an intangible mess of blurred pictures and distorted noises…Except for when looking through the future of someone or something else.” Needless to say, it caught Baozhai’s attention as she stared into Haos’s face with such intensity. “Tell me, then, what would you have me do, Haos?”
“Simple, I wish for you to return to Yemir. Nothing will prevent that card from coming true. But I need to know why! However, I will relinquish the followers over to you. Provided you have enough time to come up with a reasonable excuse for your absence. Just be warned, Jarvis can only keep them preoccupied for so long. After that, the rest falls upon you.” Haos explained in a businesslike manner, hands firmly planted on his cane. Baozhai pinched her forehead in annoyance, this day had turned out to be anything but pleasant. “Fine, just give me some time to myself.” The phantom uttered in annoyance. Haos bowed his head in understanding. As he turned around, Haos made note of the nearby gift shop and fancied himself a visit there as Baozhai contemplated on what to say.
(( Haos and Baozhai are available for asks. But Baozhai has now officially moved to @crumblingremnants so be sure to ask her there. ))

Where Hope May Lie
Humans of the modern era were weak. At least in Guo’s eyes as he stared down at the bustling metropolis beyond the distance. Though his compatriots avoided humans with some sense of caution, last thing they needed was a punk eyeing them like a trophy. To Guo, they seemed so small, so fragile. No strength, no conviction. Just... nothing. Hui told him that there was more to humans nowadays, the Cofagrigus remained determined to show skepticism until the day came.
But now wasn’t the time to ponder such thoughts. Turning his attention to back towards Xun and Hui, he made note of them huddled over a map, discussing things quietly. If purely so eavesdroppers wouldn’t pick up on their discussions. Trudging slowly towards the two, Guo crossed his arms with some impatience. “So, how are things looking, exactly?” He asked straight and to the point. The scrawnier ghosts looked at each other nervously for a moment before speaking up.
“Things are looking less than good.” Hui stated with a look of shame in her eyes. “There have been reports of her presence, here and there. But the regional winter has made the situation rather difficult. Her sightings are sporadic at best. Not to mention Xun’s tracking skills are hindered by the frost.” Hui explained as Xun nodded his head silently in agreement. The frustration the group felt was practically palpable as they all stared at the ground, heads hung in shame. At the rate this was going, their absence had likely been noticed by their foes by now.
“We’re returning home.” Guo stated abruptly, his face ever stoic, even as his companions stared at him wide eyed with bewilderment. “I know the both of you shall object. Yet, as it stands, our city remains vulnerable in our absence. Too much time wasted. We can send scouts in our stead to resume our search.” Guo ended his brief statement as Hui and Xun searched in vain to come up with a rebuttal. Yet none was found. Letting out a sigh, Hui was about to respond when a mysterious voice cut her off.
“Looking for your wayward empress, are you?” The voice had a calm, collected tone to it. Unnervingly so, as if it crept into the backs of the Cofagrigus’s minds. Spinning around, bodies ready for action, they noticed a rather regal Gothitelle stood before them. Dressed in heavy coats, the design, though nothing the ancient ghosts were familiar with, certainly strikes them as fancy. A simple wooden cane on one side, an umbrella on the other. A top hat adorned the Psychic’s other simply face. Yet his eyes, a deep purple, were piercing, even somewhat intimidating. Yet the ghosts remained on guard, not willing to give this stranger a wide berth as they closed in on him, their stature tall and imposing.
“Have you been spying on us?” Guo asked, his deep voice filled with anger. The stranger merely raised a hand, his expression calm and gentle. “You’d be correct, Guo. I have been spying, longer than a few minutes, I assure you~” The Gothitelle said in a nonchalant manner ass the undead stared at him with uncertainty. Yet Guo, ever so bold, stood right in front of the frail pokemon, fists aching to punch the stranger right in his face. “Tell me, then. If you have truly been spying on us. Why reveal yourself to us? Why tell us of our empress?... You know something about her, don’t you?” Guo said with wide eyes, his companions mimicking his expression.
“I see the years haven’t dulled your wits, Guo.” The Gothitelle stated as he slowly took his hat off, holding it to his chest as he gave a slight bow to the three. A gesture of respect they recognized all too well. “My name is Haos, I’m a more recent acquaintance of Baozhai, the empress you seek. She is truly amongst the ranks of undeath, just as you are. I could lead you to her, if you so desire?” The Gothitelle offered a small, but warm smile as the three ghosts stared at each other with uncertainty. Yet it was Xun who spoke up next.
‘How do we know you’re telling the truth? How can we trust you?” The lanky ghost asked, his eyes narrowed at Haos. The answer caught him off surprise.
“By all means, there is no reason for you to trust me aside from the statement I have made. As much worth as it would have to you three. What I do know is that your fates, the fate of your entire civilization, for what it’s worth, are tied to Baozhai. As well as the fates of others whose future remains blurred to me. So, will you trust me?” The Gothitelle stared at the three as they huddled among each other, whispering quietly as they occasionally peered their heads over to look at Haos. After a few minutes, the three approached Haos, Hui standing before them as she offered a slight smile.
“We would appreciate you showing us where she is. We’re taking a risk. But at this point, time simply will not allow us the luxury to be indecisive.”
Haos simply nodded his head in understanding. “Bao truly wasn’t joking when she said her people were dedicated and loyal. Come, your destiny awaits.” The Gothitelle gestured for the Cofagrigus to follow. And as they disappeared into the ice coated wilderness, the trio could only wonder if they would come to regret this decision.

A bird blessed with wings of thunder. Guo had been admittedly unfamiliar with such a legend, or most outside his own region for that matter. Being isolated from the world tends to do that. “Must be quite the spirit if your mistress desires to capture it. I’m already familiar with the power one of her summons possess, so I’m sure she has good reason.” Guo stated bluntly, and though his facial expression was subtle, his manner of flattering Rane may not have been.
At his lover’s question, the Cofagrigus let out a low rumble, as if the very thought bothered him to no end. “If you must know. Me and my compatriots are currently on a search for our empress. We thought her to have been joined with the bliss of afterlife. But recent evidence has come to shown she may suffer from the cursed affliction of undeath, as are we all.” Guo stared at his armored hands, as if he sincerely wished it had been all a dream. After a moment, he resumed his normally stoic expression. “We had been lead to believe she had been around these parts. But our search has been unsuccessful so far. As you can imagine, our nerves are starting to be tested.” The old warrior rested his chin on his knees, staring ahead into the pitch black of the tomb entrance.
“Oh, well Guo is the same in that regard. He can just get carried away sometimes and I’m constantly apologizing for things that don’t need apologizing-I’ll stop now.” Hui stated abruptly with a hint of embarrassment on her face as she slapped both hands over her mouth for a few seconds before stopping. Xun nervously gave the mage a light pat on the back before turning his attention to Ceridwen. “T-That would be lovely, ma’am.” The assassin was all too eager to move away from the tomb, his mind ablaze with fire as he tried to not focus on it as best he could. “Though, if you don’t mind me asking, how exactly did you and Rane come to know each other?” Xun asked with a tinge of curiosity. Staring at the two lovers in the distance converse with each other. All the while, both him and Hui slowed their pace as their strides were considerably longer than Ceridwen’s.
