Emissivity refers to the ability of glass to radiate the heat energy absorbed, and is generally found to be higher in darker surfaces. Heat loss through windows occurs primarily through radiant energy that escapes with the heating of the glass. Low-E veneers restrict this process, thereby making low-E windows better insulated for colder climates.

Low-E coating is applied as a microscopically fine layer that reflects long-wave infrared heat rays. When you turn on heating systems indoors, the heaters radiate heat waves that bounce off of low-E coated glass windows and remain within. However, if temperatures rise, the same coating can work inversely by preventing the solar heat from creeping inside.

Types of Low-E Coatings

There are two broad categories of low-E coatings: solar control low-E and passive low-E.

Passive Low-E Coating

This type of low-E is designed to maximize the absorption of solar heat into a home and passively heat the indoor environment. This cuts down your reliance on passive heaters e.g. Heating systems that radiate heat artificially.

Solar Control Low-E Coating

On the contrary, this type of low-E coating prevents the heat in solar energy from reaching indoors so that the space remains cool during hot weather. It needs to be sealed in an insulated glass (IG) or laminated unit. Hence, it reduces the dependence on air-conditioners and coolers in a tropical climate.

Both types of low-E coatings are manufactured using two production methods: pyrolytic, and Magnetron Sputter Vacuum Deposition (MSVD). The former is commonly known as hard coat while the latter as, soft coat.

The pyrolytic process gained popularity in the start of 1970s. During this process, a thin coat is layered onto the glass ribbon while it’s in the float line. Since glass is manufactured at a high temperature, it fuses with the surface to bond permanently and strengthens the material during fabrication.

In the MSVD process—which came about in the 1980s—the low-E coating is applied to pre-cut glass in a vacuum chamber at room temperature. This process has refined and evolved over the decades to suit modern needs better.

The performance of low-E glass doesn’t depend as much on the production process as it does on the manufacturing company.

Performance Metrics for Low-E Glass

As the market for glass windows grows and expands, there’s little room for inefficiencies and sub-standard quality. In order to evaluate a low-E glass, it’s important to test it across these metrics:

U-Value: this measures the amount of heat lost through the windows after a low-E coating. The lesser the heat loss, the better it performs.

Visible Light Transmittance: this measures the luminosity that the windows allow indoors.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: Incident solar radiation is transmitted, absorbed, and re-radiated inward through the windows. This measures the fraction of that allowed to transmit. The lower the coefficient, the better is the performance.  

Light to Solar Gain: This measures the ration between the visible light transmittance (VLT) and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).

Climate-appropriate preference

The hard-coat low-E coating is preferable for homes in extremely cold regions because it captures as much of the solar heat as possible. This also reduces your energy hills by a huge margin because your heaters can perform more efficiently in an insulated environment.
