If you know anything about Benedict Cumberbatch, you know that he has seriously devoted fans—they call themselves “Cumberbitches,” they are legion, and they may ask him some really weird questions. A true Cumberbitch would never mistake him for Doctor Who, as Cumberbatch claims has happened, but asking him about his favorite cheese is very much on the table.
In The Imitation Game, which is already earning Cumberbatch major awards buzz, he plays the British mathematician Alan Turing, who may have single-handedly helped Britain win World War II by cracking Nazi codes. Cumberbatch talked to Krista Smith about digging into Turing’s work and internal life, and, of course, about the ecstatic fans who greeted him in Toronto.
