Wanna see the highest lions? Obviously you do so

zoom, enhance, etc.

From Livre des propriétés des choses, the 1447 French version of Bartholomaeus Anglicus' De proprietatibus rerum. Translated by Jean Corbechon, written and illuminated by Etienne Sauderat. The illustrations are actually very nicely done and faithful where the artist has seen the animals, and a bit... unfortunate when he hasn't.
Two more from it too good to leave out, Elephant and Circle Rat:

funny thing, i was holidaying bali earlier this year with my dad, and a really nice farmer - whose place we were visiting as part of a chef's tour thing - roasted some banana skipper caterpillars (Erionota thrax) and crickets (some kind of Sia, I think? not sure though) for us to try.
they both tasted EXACTLY LIKE SHRIMP. 🦐 zero difference. like if you blindfolded me and made me eat them, I'd 100% believe you'd fed me shrimp.
specifically, the caterpillars tasted like dried shrimp (hae bee or udang kering, if you're familiar with that); just really umami and moreish and perfectly bite sized. the crickets had more texture and were sort of... you know when you roast shrimps whole, and then eat the heads alone, and it's super intense? that's what eating fresh roasted cricket was like.
both my dad and I were incredibly weirded out, because this was in bali's central highlands and hours and hours away from ANY sort of beach. whatever flavour we'd been expecting, it definitely wasn't seafood, lol
...also i've eaten various sorts of bugs (among other things) and none of them were anywhere near that yummy. i actually asked the farmer guy about it because I was wondering if there were more bugs that tasted like that or if it was just THESE bugs in particular.
so what I was told is that bugs, like shrimps, is best when eaten VERY very extremely fresh. the vast majority of bugs in cities are either very stale or heavily processed and powdered, and apparently don't actually taste like bugs as a result. and I mean, shrimp and is highly perishable and people are always like, fresh is best for seafood, so it makes sense the same would apply to bugs.
anyway. just wanted to say that bugs doesnt just is shrimps; bugs is delicious shrimps.
here's some shitty handphone pics + a couple more of the stingless honeybees he keeps as well lol:

BUGS. IS. SHRIMPS!!!

Hello! Could I request a feature of red junglefowl, particularly the hens? The cocks are of course extremely iconic and recognisable (as chicken ancestors), but there are quite a few small flocks in the park next to where I live, and the gorgeous black and gold colour of the hens is much less well known and they're such underrated lovely birds! Like they're actually shiny IRL; it's completely different from buff hens! Here's some examples: lone, two, three
I have spent many hours feeding them in Kauai, and I totally agree with you about their alllllure.

(source: Rubio, Baigorria & Stolar, 2025. Spiders of the genus Cylistella (Salticidae: Simonellini) from Argentina.)
According to the authors' description of new species C. daphneae, the subtle difference in hue between the male (left) and female (right) specimens captured in these photographs is representative, with males primarily occupying the orange-brown end of the range while females exhibit a true black.
The tiny jumpers of this genus are thought to be mimics of smaller Coccinellidae (the ladybird beetle family).

This lovely Georgian (1760s) townhouse was built for a sea captain in Ramsgate, Kent, UK. 3bds, 2ba, 3,062sqft, $1.291m approx. USD. Submitted by curieously.
This is a gem. It's the only house on the block that features a front porch, as well as a terrace.
The entrance foyer has a lovely arch and original stairs. This home is all about the details.
Immediately to the right, enter the sitting room that features a fireplace, wood paneled walls and a large window seat.
I thought that this head was decor, but it's carved into the wood.
Next to the sitting room is a 2nd reception room.
It also has a fireplace and look at the shelving tucked into the corner. The door looks like an original accordion style door.
A gothic shaped door.
Opens to a small back porch.
The dining area is so spacious. It looks like they made a shelf in an original fireplace.
If you love original vintage kitchens, this one is perfection.
It hardly looks like it's been touched, but the star of the show has got to be that large yellow AGA stove. Good Lord, that thing is worth at least $11k.
Now, this is a vintage kitchen. The tiles are gently worn, and the natural patina is amazing.
Closeup of the millwork on the newel post and railings.
The primary bedroom is very large and has access to the wonderful pagoda-inspired terrace.
This is beautiful.
In here there's a sweet little sewing room and a large closet. And, look at the original wide plank flooring.
Vintage pink bath.
Love this bedroom, too. It has a fireplace and a sink.
And, look at that built-in armoire.
Another spacious bedroom. The bed is in front of a fireplace, so you could arrange the room differently, plus it also has a sink.
Bright bath with a cool round bowl tub.
Check out the view of the sea from the front terrace.
Looking down at the garden.

Super fun house! One pretty neat thing about it is that it was designed by Alexander C. Eschweiler, and if you're unfamiliar with him but he was the designer for these Japonist gas stations for Wadham's Oil and Grease Company as well.

Curieous found this 1912 castle house in Milwaukee, WI. 7bds, 4.5ba, 9,154sqft, $4.2m. It's big, pricey, but has turrets. Let's see how castle-y it is.
Oh. They went with a black "rag" faux finish in the entrance hall. Maybe they were going for a medieval stone look.
There's this ante room that you enter before you step down into the sitting room.
I must say that the sitting room is lovely. Doors open to the patio in the back of the house.
Then down the hall to the den. Very nice room.
The formal dining room. This is very nice, too.
The kitchen is so pretty with the pale green fireplace.
It has a beautiful butler's pantry.
Nice reception room.
The powder room has a makeup vanity before you enter the half bath.
Very classy, and it has the vintage style raised tank.
Nice leaded glass windows.
Very large primary suite.
Look at this- the turret has a little seat and chandelier.
What a great closet and dressing area.
The bath has been redone. This is nice, the tile resembles castle stone.
Look at the gorgeous sunroom. This would make a glorious conservatory.
The bedrooms are huge.
This one has a nice little vintage shower room ensuite.
Oh, look at this one. Toile. Love this. It has a lovely alcove, too.
Another remodeled shower room with the original vintage medicine cabinet.
Here's a covered porch with a terra cotta tile floor.
Look at the back of the home.
Come down the stairs to this huge patio with a view of Lake Michigan.
Beautiful park-like grounds.
This property is like a picture. 1.35 acres of land.

Could I request a feature on Asian Koels (Eudynamys scolopaceus)? They're great birds; much easier to hear than spot (since the males look exactly the same as crows but just red-eyed and the females are really well camouflaged). They're tremendously loud and silly and don't look like what people imagine when they think of cuckoos, but they absolutely are! And it's funny sometimes seeing juveniles with confused adoptive parents.

Hello! I have a request if that's fine! Could you feature Bourke's parakeets (Neopsephotus bourkii)? I think you did before in 2023, but they have so many mutations and colours, including Very Pink! I also particularly love this wildtype photo because it shows how their dusky gray backs and pink-red breasts blend in so well into their environment
Oh nice! I don't learn new parrots that often anymore. This is a new one for me!
