“All right, so the vampire’s gravestone is–”
“Cenotaph.”
“What?”
“It’s only a gravestone if it marks the location of a body. A monument honouring someone whose body isn’t present is a cenotaph.”
“I’m… not sure that’s how it works if the body gets up and walks away on its own.“
“There’s precedent for gravestones being reclassified as cenotaphs if the body is later removed and reinterred elsewhere. There’s no rule that says the body itself can’t do the removing.“
“Okay, but the body very much is coming back. That’s kind of what we’re here to accomplish.”
“So it’s a temporary cenotaph.”
“And naturally our greatest concern here is avoiding semantic ambiguity.“
“Semantic ambiguity is how vampires get you.”

I started reading a new book and I must absolutely recommend it to TMA fans. It's giving workplace comedy with spooky/mystery backdrop in London.
It's called The Kraken by China Mieville.
Basic premise: A hapless museum curator unwittingly becomes the center of attention of some weird not-cops and a spooky squid cult trying to end the world.
There's weird supernatural happenstance he's trying to figure out on top of the murder, mystery, and intrigue. And my god, the writing and dialogue is just infused with that dry wit that I loved so much in TMA.
I am only seven chapters in of very many so I have no idea if the book sticks the landing. Also it was released in 2010 as fair warning. But please check it out if you're craving some of that early TMA flavor!
#the magnus archives#tma#it was a little slow to start but after a few chapters the mystery really kicks in and it becomes quite the page turner

Called out of work cause my car's fucked and my boss actually emailed me back saying that wasn't acceptable and I should have gotten an uber or a taxi in to work.
It is taking all my might not to send him a screenshot of the literal $10 I have in my bank account right now and quit on the spot.
#i know it wont help#but this guy is so naive and has never struggled a day in his fucking life#sure the pennies you pay me for a highly specialized job that should be salaried is definitely enough to just buy private transportation#im this close to quitting

As if the *gestures vaguely to the everything* wasn't enough, I recently developed a health thing that means I can't drink coffee without puking.
I can't even have my little coffee treat to help face the horrors anymore.

idk about you all but the horrors at the lowest depths of the ocean are completely within my comprehension. it's just some weird fish with sharp teeth or like, a big squid or whatever. maybe some huge sea bug. why is this so existentially terrifying to you all

I urge everybody take part in this! Next weekend, April 25-28, get outside and take photos of whatever organisms you can find. It is mostly a friendly competition among the world’s cities, but there is a category for everyone else too. I especially want to encourage those of you who live in Philadelphia, or in one of the counties that shares a border with Philadelphia. Let’s beat last year’s numbers for species and participants. After you take the photos you’ll have another few days to upload them to iNaturalist.
Let’s go Philly!
