Plastic Fangs Excerpt
“My father returned early. Something happened, I think, but I don’t know what. I think he came back wrong. No one ever asked me, but there was something about him. Missing.”

um guys, I think we need to stop waiting for ‘the right time’ and just start doing the things we want whenever because the right time’s never gonna come, and if we keep waiting it’s just gonna turn into an endless cycle

When I first started writing novels, "write first, edit later" was HUGELY helpful because it stopped me from constantly going back and tinkering with things when I wasn't sure how to move forward. Not that there's anything wrong with backtracking, but in my case, I'd tinker with prose instead of solving actual problems, which ended up frustrating me and ultimately, tanking the project from being publishable.
Flash forward to now: For the most part, I save revisions for after the drafting process, UNLESS I know for sure something is wrong and that backtracking will help me move forward. I do a much better job of picking out my usual-suspect story issues now, since I've gone through feedback rounds with other projects.
Beyond that, my revision process generally looks like this:
After a first draft: re-outline to add, subtract, or change big story beats (without actually having to write things out in case I change my mind)
Second draft: Fix big structural plot things, start to fix character things
Third draft: More focus on character arcs, emotions, voice - things that are hard to nail down before the plot is in order
Any later drafts: Respond to direct feedback, fix prose, layer in thematic details and fun character moments now that I've gotten to know everyone better.

Why I don't track word count: Made a huge improvement to my draft that involved combining two scenes, backtracking to add some more character thought, and figuring out a large-scale revision I'll need to make next draft, so my overall wordcount increased by -50.

One of the worst feelings is being mentally and emotionally excited to write but physically way, way too tired to write.

12 and 20 for tech asks!
- @akindofmagictoo
@akindofmagictoo
12. Open the notes/note-taking app on their phone. What’s there?
August has a list of potential job interview questions long with their answers. They add to it every time they think of something. They have 83 questions total.
Gabriel has a list of books, TV shows, games, etc. his friends have recommended to him that he only has a 34% chance of following up on.
20. What’s in their email inbox?
We'll go with personal email inboxes because work email inboxes are less interesting. (Usually.)
August has another stupid update email from LinkedIn.
Gabriel has a marketing email from an online retailer where he bought a polo shirt with a tropical print: The summer of FUN is still going strong! ☀️20% OFF SUMMER CLEARANCE 🚚 FREE SHIPPING on orders of $65 or more!

17 and 13 for the tech game, oc of choice 🙂
17. What’s the last thing they searched in an incognito tab 👀 (doesn’t need to be NSFW!)
I provided some inconito searches before, but have some more!
August may or may not have incognito searched their Ex's workplace to see if he's still there. (He is.)
Gabriel is starting a new page in his life where he's experiencing freedom he's never had before. He's getting to know himself! He wants to try new things! Including sexy things, maybe? He doesn't know where to start.
So, after chickening out a few times, he incognito searches "list of kinks" for, you know, ideas. Then, through a not-hard-to-believe series of clicks, he ends up on ao3 kind-of by accident. He's never dabbled in fanfic before but it popped up in his search, and now he's curious. And - oh! There's a game he recognizes! And a character he likes! And lots of fics about that character getting-
13. What do they use as an avatar or profile photo on social media sites?
August generally uses photos of themself, but there's a stark difference between the Finance Bro photo they use on LinkedIn and the Edgy Thembo Selfie they use on Instagram.
Gabriel isn't super social media-active. He's largely abandoned most personal social media, so those profile photos are all outdated pictures of him. He is active on some gaming discords, where his avatar is [INSERT RELEVANT GAME CHARACTER HERE - someone friendly/kind/paladin-coded]

Hiya!
10. Describe a photo they have saved on their phone.
Please and thank you.
Gabriel has a picture of his Ikea dresser, which he sent to his online friends as proof of furniture-assembling victory.
August has a selfie with their sister at Christmas, where they're wearing matching Christmas pajamas - nothing crazy, just cozy flannel in reds, whites, and greens.
