I don't think it's as simple as 'not being able to see that Jackie loved her', either - she believed that even if Jackie did love her it was because she didn't truly know her and therefore it didn't count. And Shauna PUT IN EFFORT to make sure Jackie never truly knew her because the idea that Jackie would know her and reject her was scary, sure, but worse was that Jackie might know her and love her anyway because then she'd have to accept that it was real. That her actions would have real consequences and she couldn't hide behind their teenage melodrama if their relationship was actually healthy and honest because she'd have to confront the fact that she has a problem. I am a DEEP believer of Shauna having a cluster-b disorder that would have presented regardless of the crash, even if she wasn't also dealing with post-partum depression and trauma-induced psychosis.

She self-sabotages and she knows it, she doesn't know how to stop herself from crossing the line again and again. There's an element of control there to making herself hard to love where she can cling onto the idea that if she just stopped hurting people nobody would ever leave her so long as she never tests the theory, but she also knows it's not true. Her dad would leave regardless, the plane would crash regardless, Jackie and her baby would die regardless. Hurting people feels like self-defense to her, even when her emotions are stemming from mental illness instead of any outside threat.

I've said this before and have a hard time explaining it, but it feels inaccurate to me to just say Shauna hates herself. She hates a lot of things about what her life is and who it has made her, but none of that will ever be all that Shauna Shipman is. To me, she keeps Jackie around because Jackie only sees the good and while it's not everything, it's still a part of Shauna. She's clever, she's funny, she's talented, she's creative, she's kind - she is all of the things Jackie loved about her, she's just not only those things. And all the dark parts of her, the parts of her that Melissa claimed to love, she's not just those parts either.

Don't understand why people get so annoyed at Shauna for not being able to see that Jackie loved her. It's not as simple as Shauna being dense or self-obsessed. Like doesn't that just make you sad? Doesn't your heart hurt when Shauna asks Melissa why she even likes her? Why do you think she begs Jeff to tell her he loves her, even when she knows he doesn't mean it? She has two emotionally/physically distant parents, seemingly no siblings, and a best friend who (whatever her reasons) kept Shauna at arms length emotionally. Is it any wonder Shauna thinks she is fundamentally unlovable? She self-sabotages in her relationships because she just can't ever let herself believe the other person truly cares as much about her as she does them.

Not believing that Shauna doesn't remember large parts of being in wilderness because she had her journals to reread is so funny to me. As if they would be helpful? Like are people really under the impression Shauna was recording objective information in there? Shauna experiences the world so emotionally, and she did not give a shit about recording their experiences as a group, just her own internal perception of it. Nevermind the fact she was literally experiencing psychosis during the period she doesn’t remember. That journal in particular is probably 40% lies she convinced her paranoid self of and 60% bitching about Mari.
