Nash Didan Jews from the Lake Urmia region, Iranian West Azerbaijan (Eastern Kurdistan), early 20th century

Nash Didan means “our people” in Lishan Didan, a Judeo-Aramaic dialect very similar to Assyrian Aramaic. It is believed that this Jewish community was established during the Babylonian exile in 500 BCE in the northwest of Iran near Lake Urmia, spreading to villages in the Van Region in today's Turkey. Like many other mountain tribes, they managed to retain their unique identity for centuries, keeping them from assimilating into Persian, Kurdish or Turkish culture.

“Haskalah” — 2025

The Haskalah is the Hebrew name for a period in Jewish history known in English as the “Jewish Enlightenment” in Europe. The Haskalah, in Germany in particular, was the result of a time in the 18th century when certain discriminatory laws against Jews were being lifted and in-turn brought many Jews for the first time out of the stagnant darkness of the Ghetto and into Europe’s wider Enlightenment period. Historical figures like Moses Mendelssohn paved the way for the beginnings of modern Judaism, which would inevitably lead to the creation of the Reform, Conservative, and Modern Orthodox branches of Judaism, as well as for the first time giving special classification to those Jews who would choose to stay within the old ways “Haredim.”

I made this poster to represent all the ways in which Judaism would go on to branch out and evolve during and in succession of the Haskalah, with the stylized menorah emitting all the colours of the rainbow from it’s branches; from a source in ancient tradition, to a great assortment of new ideas and methods of religious practice. As for the red background, I just thought it contrasted well.
