Unless Spader was excited about Lizzington, it was never going to be THAT. It was always something else.
Jon Bokenkamp: The ending has always been our guiding light. I sat down with James in his backyard. I'll never forget it. I was terrified. After we shot the pilot, He wanted to talk about "where this is going". And I said, well, I have an idea, and I'll tell you what I think it is… Because we could just be completely winging it. You know, I mean that's what happens oftentimes. But I said as a movie guy, I have to know the ending. You can't just. you can't… fake it. You know? You gotta kinda know where you're going. And I pitched him the ending.
And in classic Spader sort of that laugh, and the hand rub, and OMG, he was like… alright, "I'm in". You know? and, uh, if he had said no, that would've been terrifying.

Thank you for your submission and for giving me your thoughts on Redarina. This is a topic that I am passionate about, so if you ever want to discuss, feel free to send me a message. (I know you said you have spoken about this extensively and are tired of it.)

Hi! This is just a little submission in regards to one of your Redarina posts. Just wanted to share my thoughts on the matter. Please don’t take offence, English is not my first language so I hope everything here makes sense lol!
I’m going to preface this by saying that I hadn’t seen anything with James Spader in it prior to watching The Blacklist. I was not aware of how tremendously sexualised the man has been in the industry. To me, this was just another procedural show with more interesting twists and turns.
The way in which Red looks at Liz is not through mere adoration. There are sexual undertones there. The way in which he speaks, especially early on in the show, is sexual in nature. If I could pick that up as the teenager I was when I began watching the show with my father, it’s shocking to me that other viewers can’t. Whether they ship Red and Liz or not (I personally don’t. Waaaaay to toxic as with every relationship in this show. But I can still understand how people do), it’s hard to deny that there is an intimacy there that is not familial.
If Red was Katarina all along, somebody somewhere should’ve told James because the way Red acted toward Liz is not how any maternal or paternal relationship should go. And if he was told, no shade to him, I think he’s an incredible guy, but somebody somewhere needs to check that man’s browser history fr.
The reason why so many viewers have a hard time accepting Redarina is because Katarina never showed any distinct signs of being trapped inside of the wrong body. It was a “Oh no! I’m being hunted by every agency known to man. Shii- guess I’ll trans my gender real quick.” It was a “This is the only option.” As opposed to being a “This is what I’ve longed for my entire existence and know I finally have my chance.”
In other words, it’s insensitive. And the show makes no attempt to iron out those insensitivities, if anything, it heightens them.
As well as this, what makes Red so likeable is that despite the fact he is evil, he has a gentleman-like charm to him. He loves those most closest to him, cherishes them. He treats women with respect (unless they themselves are the devil’s spawn) and isn’t afraid to be affectionate to both men and women. He’s exactly what the world needs in a time where men think it’s ‘cool’ to go on podcasts and insult women because that’s the ‘alpha’ thing to do. He shows what it is like to be a real man.
Being Katarina strips that back. It makes the intimacy he shares with Dembe less than as what made it so good was the male-bonding that the word lacks these days. It makes the respect for women less than because he used to be one and therefore only acts that way because he knows how it feels. Everyone can dislike that all they want, but it is the truth.
I have a great deal more to say about this but frankly, I’ve spoken about it far too many times amongst friends to have the energy anymore.
So, while I don’t necessarily believe they wrote themselves into a corner, per say, they did find themselves exhausting all other possibilities and even in the end *of the show – they still didn’t admit who he is.
Thank you. Wish you all the best and hope you have a nice day. Understand this comes from a place of love, not hate x

Tom: Are you telling me, like, what – Like, you think that I murdered a KGB defector, like I’m Bond? I’m Tom Bond, and I just, uh between social studies and recess, I go around assassinating people.
I will NEVER TIRE of this epic line. 🤣
