Hey, everyone. Chris Hornbrook here from Big Black Delta/Poison the Well. I had the pleasure of playing the all new Evans Heavy Weight snare head for the past few weeks on tour. Right off the bat, I loved the sound. I’ve been using it on my Q Drum Co. 14x8 Black Beauty snare drum with an Evans E Ring to dampen any overtones the head might produce. Big Black Delta’s music requires a super low wallet-ish type of snare sound, so this head was perfect for the gig. While at pre-production, I noticed that the head had a very different response than my normal go to coated G2. The Heavyweight was a bit difficult to pull ghost notes out of the head right off the bat, and laying into rim shots required more energy to execute. This may have been due to the low tuning and thickness of the head so it took a few shows to adjust to it. In terms of sound/tonality the Heavyweight really comes to life after a week or so of playing. It required a bit of “mashing” to break it in. What I liked most about the Heavyweight was it has a very full snap with lots of body. After a few weeks of playing I noticed that the head started to develop a prominent ring. I normally try to tune the snare drum to a note and most of Big Black Delta’s music is in C so I’ll try to go with a C3 or C4 depending on where the snare drum naturally sits. I was going for more snare wire sound and depth with no ring for this run. Even with an E Ring and Pro Gaff this note kept popping out. No matter what type of dampening I put on the head, it kept coming through. I don’t know what I can really attribute that to, but I had never had that issue before. It took throwing a Snare Weight on it at the last show to really kill it. One of the key selling points for this head is durability. I had the Heavyweight on my snare for close to a month and it held up pretty much the entire time. I felt that it peeked for about two weeks before I noticed any slight change in sound. I would recommend this head to any hard hitting drummers out there that want to get mileage out of a head, but not sacrifice tone. I feel this is a good investment for what you get in return and in the future, would use it again on the road for more heavy handed situations. www.chrishornbrook.com www.facebook.com/chrishornbrook www.youtube.com/user/christopherhornbrook
