The old man of the sea. It has been a few years since I encounter the bigger cuttlefish here. This one was about 30cm long.

FUN FACT!
the ominous-sounding VAMPIRE SQUID doesn't eat other animals! it just feeds on mostly animal poop, snot, and other "organic material" named marine snow. wouldn't you expect it to be some brutal cannibal or carnivore at least?

Just learned that not every animal that lives underwater is considered a fish… including cephalopods… I should probably stop tagging my posts with #fishblr now :,)

I’m disappointed in myself that until today (watched a documentary that spoke about them in some detail) I didn’t care for nautiloids… those poor suckers are as old as Father Time and they’re still just bumping around in their little shells… and their tiny little pinhole eyes… their intelligence doesn’t seem to measure up to its cousins (grandkids?)… about the only thing they have going for them is that they can live up to a whopping 20 years!!! but other than that they’re kind of helpless and i love them

Hello tumblr! I was organizing and I found this National Geographic magazine that I like, “Inside animal minds”. It has a page mentioning the veined/coconut octopus and its use of tools as an example of animal intelligence :)

This is such a cool magazine besides that page too! It discusses animal grief, love, and morality.
P.S. sorry for the bad pictures, I tried

My Favorite Octopus!!!!
YAPPING TIME:
my favorite octopus, if i had to pick one, would be the blue-ringed octopus! to be honest, i don't have like a special reason specific to me that the blue-ringed octopus is my favorite. my reason is pretty basic, i like them because they are beautiful!
they also remind me of such a beautiful song that i associate the two with each other. the song is "i love you golden blue" by sonic youth. give it a listen if you have the time or want a recommendation.
i digress; the reason they evoke such awe from me is, of course, their famous bright blue rings! the way their rings can go from being faint to flashing like a neon sign when they are threatened! and to contrast, their skin can go from a dusty tan to a golden yellow!
this feature is not specific to blue-ringed octopuses but is something i find interesting about coleoids in general: the way that their ability to change color is so important to their survival that it is akin to breathing. the chromatophores that allow them to warn off predators or blend in with their surroundings don't need brain input or even visual input to change color. that's because their skin does all the work, detecting light (and therefore color). they also color-change faster than any other animal!
so maybe i lied, my fascination with the blue-ringed octopus is not purely aesthetic. i also think they are incredible creatures from a scientific(?) standpoint, putting one of the octopus's coolest biological features to use in a way that is practical and visually stunning.
if anyone actually read this, tell me your thoughts :) what's a feature of an animal that is unique or just super cool?
