DSA Presentation

I wrote about Immunizations and the controversy currently surrounding them. My main purpose was to properly educate parents on immunizations. To help them make an educated decision toward them, and avoid hearsay. I chose a YouTube movie for this assignment which uses pathos. The following YouTube video link, takes you to a movie called the Greater Good. This movie manipulates the emotions of the viewers, and entices fear. It narrates the stories of children that had immunization injuries, and how they have to cope with them everyday.

My topic for this assignment was the influence of society on body shaming. To me, this post on a tumblr blog was the most useful to me because the writer gave examples that seemed normal before the research but now they seem extremely dangerous. 

The post is really interesting and calls for attention. the pictures included are actual posts on social media like instagram and facebook which makes younger readers want to read the post. The main idea is that there are challenges on social media like the collar bone challenge or the belly button test that promote self esteem. There are pictures of girls who are actually doing these things and they look extremely skinny and as if they are still not content with their bodies. Which means that they are body shaming themselves. In this post we can see how it is society who is affecting the mentalities of these girls but on the other hand, why are they doing it? Because they are pressured by society or because they want to look good for themselves?

DSA Presentation Week 15

The use of analogy or the comparison between one thing and another in this case the Syrian Refugee Crisis and the Holocaust was used to establish pathos in my source. The rhetorical choice is used quite a bit in the genre I choose because it is something people use in order to clearly get their point across to others. By comparing the United States reaction to bringing in Jewish refugees in the 1930s and how many U.S. citizens feel about bringing in Syrian refugees today the author intended to put this situation into perspective for readers and urges them not to make the same mistakes which lead to death of many of those Jewish refugees in German concentration camps. attached below is the link to the full source.

My thoughts towards this topic are that it's okay to allow weapons on campus because in a way its for our own protection and the people around us but with certain restrictions obviously because not everybody is on board with these changes. @christopheryoo

Throughout your video you mentioned that we need to eat healthy and exercise to help fight different diseases but can you explain what eating healthy means and what is the right portion of food that we need to eat? 

The use of Induction helped establish logos in my video. I gave many reasonable examples on how to overcome and prevent obesity, through trustworthy resources, like nutritionists and doctors. The advocacy of my video is informative because I explained in great detail all of the diseases caused by obesity, and what types of food lead to becoming overweight.

At the end of your video you said that immigration was going to be a problem in the future why do you think its going to be a problem?

One of the rhetorical choices that was used in my DSA, was the use of video images and pictures to portray immigration. The use of logos was established through the usage of several charts showing the rate of immigrants and their origin that are currently or have been a part of the United States. The video explains the causes of immigration and the actions that are taken in order to minimize the number of immigrants that come into the United States.

Week 13

I choose to do the Digital Source Analysis because of me it was easier to find sources about it in the internet. This time I decided to do the other point of view of the situation since in my previous papers I went more towards the positive point of views in my topic which is gun violence laws. Another thing that made it easy for me to decide to do the DSA was that our sources did not have to be credible.

 For this paper I decided that I would use two videos from YouTube that expressed how owners from business in Texas feel about the open carry gun laws and the other one was the gun violence law speech that President Obama gave and a Twitter post as part of my sources since it’s where people express their opinions more openly.

Week 10

1.What patterns did you find in the development, or enhancement of your research skills?

My research skills did develop during this assignment. I found myself going over and over my draft to see if I was going on the correct track. 

2.Did your assessment/evaluation of the sources change? If so, how?

My sources have change since I started doing research for my topic and my sources keep changing until today because some did not give me the information that I needed or I did not believe they were credible.

 3.Do you think the methodology described in questions 1 and 2 work? Yes/No. Explain.

Yes in a way this methodology did help because it allowed me to feel good about what I have written and not to be one sided on this topic. It also helped me figure out what my paper was still missing and be able to put it together better.

 4. Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question.

In question 2 my rhetorical choices involve ethos because when looking for good sources they have to be credible and I was doubting if my sources had it.

Week 7

My research for this assignment has been difficult and very interesting in a way. I got to use the Utep database for the first time and found really good articles that help me in my Literature Review. But it was also hard knowing which article to choose or not. After looking though some articles I found that it was really easy and got the hang of it.

Week 5 GA Reflection Post

1. What impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing? My first thought about this assignment was that it was going to be easy but then things got a little harder since we needed to gather evidences and explain the genres.

 2. What are the complexities of using genres? It was hard to find good genres that would represent what you’re talking about the way that you need it. One other complexity that I had was trying to stay neutral between both of the genres.

3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?  It takes your writing to another level by giving us a chance to see beyond what we already know.

 4. Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question. I choose to answer question 2 since I used the gif about not being enough because sometimes I worry that what I have is not good enough. But at the end people only see your final work and don't know how difficult it was to accomplish.

Week 3 Post

The student example that I choose to grade was “Campus Violence Against Women” written by Maria Eugenia Martinez. I would give this paper an A, since it explains very well the genre throughout the paper giving good examples. The introduction of this paper basically explained the genre by giving examples that involved violence towards women in school/ universities. This paper also informs the audience about the changes that are being made to solve this situation by mentioning examples about it. In my opinion I think this paper was very organized and a focused paper since it talks about the two genres and did a good job comparing them even though she could have done better in that aspect.

1. Who is the intended audience/discourse community for each genre? The audience intended for this topic is everyone but mostly those who want to own a gun.

2. What is the purpose of the information presented in the genres? The purpose of this information presented in the genre is to inform the audience about the new process of owning a gun in the United States.

3. How does the audience tie in with the purpose? Are they trying to convince a certain discourse community to agree with them or think differently? Are they trying to encourage general awareness? The audience ties in with the purpose because the main purpose of the article is to make the world safety

4. How does the genre help to establish the information’s credibility? The article establishes credibility by using the White House website to post it online and was published by the Office of Press Secretary.

 5. How does each genre help to evoke an emotional response from the audience? Which emotions? Is it effective in helping to achieve the purpose? Why? The emotional response that this genre provokes on the audience is to worry but in a way is relieve since now they are going to be stricter with the gun laws.

6. What types of evidence are used to support the claims of the information in the genres? Is it appropriate for the purpose? Why or why not? This genre states examples that the United States had to go though and have led to the new gun laws. It is appropriate for this purpose because the owning of a gun had led to many incidents in the last years.

7. How is the information shaped by the genre (s)? The information is shaped in a way that it makes it easier for the audience to understand.

8. How are the genres organized to convey their messages? The message of this article is well organized since it states a new change and gives more information about it.

9. What other communication features (i.e., visuals, colors, fonts, etc.) contribute to the message? The use of bold font is used to demonstrate the important changes that are being made.
