He just really loves his wife and finds public mention of/encounters with any sexuality to be awkward, you see. I grew up watching Columbo in syndication with my late mom and I'm so tickled that tumblr is into him.

It bothers me that this does not scan correctly to "Killing Me Softly." In honor of National Poetry Month, I think it should be "chilling me slowly with this seltz."

Just a reminder any time a celebrity or creator you like turns out to be a vile bigot and/or criminal, and you're tempted to say that that could not possibly be true of them.
Anyone who is a successful writer or actor or celebrity is, pretty much by definition, professionally skilled at crafting illusions.
That doesn't mean that they are always lying or a bad person, but it means that they know how to influence peoples' perceptions, and do it well.
And the more successful they are, the more you admire their work, the better they are at it.

TW: rape, assault, child abuse, grooming, sexual violence, non-consent, power imbalance, financial abuse, exploitation. I don't know how many trigger warnings could ever cover what is in the Vulture article.
This ruined my day yesterday. I LOVED Neil Gaiman as a vulnerable and mentally ill teenage writer who wrote poems inspired by his work, read his blog avidly and longed to meet him and get writerly advice. Sandman, Good Omens, Stardust, Neverwhere, "Snow, Glass, Apples." His work meant a lot to me. He was my favorite writer for a long time.
I checked out of his work in recent years, due to his association with Scientology and his marriage to Amanda Palmer, another artist I liked in my teens more casually and her lyrics resonated with me... Until I found out that one of the songs I was listening to featured a suicide hoax she played on an ex who then completed suicide later on. And her not paying musicians. And her lack of inhibitions that began to seem like failing to respect boundaries and decorum and consent. And the ableist Evelyn Evelyn project.
Here, her crimes are being a negligent parent who allowed her child to witness her husband's sexual conduct, including non-consensual encounters. She allowed a vulnerable gay young woman to be alone with him, apparently asking him not to hurt her?!?! And of course he did. And she knew about 14 other survivors. Of her husband. With whom she had a child.
If you're going to be in a severely damaged relationship with a not-good person, have the decency to not bring children or other innocent people into it. Keep your toxicity to yourself if you must. I just think there's no way to explain her being so negligent around her very young son who has now witnessed untold nightmares that he will carry with him. God, my heart goes out to that poor child whose face I should not know and name I should not know because I also think you should not subject minors to public fame on social media. But that's the least of the issues here. I don't understand what kind of denial you have to be in to continue to allow your husband to assault nannies while your son plays on an iPad.
Everything reads differently now. I saw Tori Amos has not stood up for him and he's her daughter's godfather and he's referenced in many of her songs and I feel so awful for her.
My own assault trauma and my emotional abuse trauma got HEAVILY triggered reading this and I cried off and on most of the evening. It's a harrowing account of the actions of a man who ingratiated himself to everyone, including on this very website. I keep reading what people are saying because I just want to know what I never knew.
I don't want to catch up on the books I haven't read, I don't want to see his TV shows, I don't want to ever give him more money than I have on the books I'm getting rid of. I hate that someone I really respected who really did try to hide a despicable abuser under his awkwardly charming English gentleman character. He was never an ally or a feminist or anything. He was just another man who takes advantage of vulnerable people for his own gratification. Vile.
With the release of Vulture magazine's feature (un-paywalled) expanding on the stories of the women abused by Neil Gaiman who had previously come forward, now more than ever it's important to continue to keep the PR machine from trying to bury the stories.

IMPORTANT REMINDER
Individuals providing testimonies of abuse is evidence.
When people say 'so we are just supposed to take her at her word?' the answer is YES.
If the only reason you take his word over hers is because you want to believe that someone whose work you admire isn't capable of such actions, then this is a reality check. You can never know what is it another person's heart and mind. You cannot judge them solely by their words. You can only truly take their measure by their actions.
Examine your internal biases and ask yourself why would someone come forward and share stories of abuse by someone with significantly more power at great personal risk if they weren't true? They have everything to lose, and yet they came forward anyway to try to prevent Neil Gaiman from harming any other vulnerable women the way that he harmed them.
Only 2-8% of sexual assault allegations are found to be false.
The myth of accusing the innocent of sexual assault as some kind of revenge is exactly that: a myth perpetuated by rape culture that persists because when one cares for or admires the accused, people want it to be true.
That fence that you believe that you are standing on is an invisible line drawn in the sand.
Believe survivors. Amplify their voices. Share their stories. Hold people accountable. Actions have consequences.
THINGS WE CAN DO AS INDIVIDUALS
Repost articles and transcripts as they appear in the trades and the mainstream press, and tag them with the appropriate trigger warnings and content warnings.
Keep amplifying the voices of the survivors, and showing up with compassion and empathy and support for the untold numbers who have yet to come forward.
Keep talking about the allegations of abuse and sexual assault levelled at Neil Gaiman. Do not let it fade into the background, or be drowned out by vigorous promotion of his upcoming works. Boost the signal, particularly to raise awareness across fandoms so fans can do their best to protect themselves from potential abuse in the future.
Make donations to RAINN and The Survivors Trust, and find out what you can do on a local level to support survivors of sexual assault and abuse.
Do not tag fan works such as fanfic, fan art, quotes, gifsets, and meta discussions about Gaiman's work or live-action adaptations of Gaiman's work with #Neil Gaiman so that you are not doing the expensive PR team's work for them by helping to bury the story of Neil Gaiman's abuse of vulnerable women on social media.
Do not bully Neil Gaiman's peers in the industry, friends and family, or actors currently involved in live action adaptations of his work for not immediately making any kind of public statements.
Do not bully fellow fans. Everyone is working through their very complex feelings and relationships with both the text and the man at their own speed. Please give them the space to grieve that loss, but continue to center the stories of the survivors and express sympathy and empathy for all of the survivors who have yet to come forward.
As others have noted, The Tortoise Media Slow News podcast that initially broke the story is run by a group of well-respected journalists, and Ms Johnson is not a full-time member of the staff but was only given a shared byline on the story because one of the survivors contacted her privately which is what kicked off the year long investigation.
Filter out noise such as kink-shaming, anti-BDSM discourse, and other editorial comments and instead focus on the actual words of survivors recounting their experiences.
Remember that despite using the language of BDSM, what the survivors have recounted is in fact examples of coercive control and abuse cloaked in the language of kink. It's very important to note that BDSM nearly always includes extensive negotiation of consent to specific acts and partners check in with one another constantly, establish safe words, and engage in aftercare. That is absolutely not what was described by the survivors thus far.
Sexual assault is not about sex so much as it is about power. In every instance reported thus far, the common thread has been predatory behaviour toward vulnerable women. In more than one case, women who were employed in Neil Gaiman's households and were reliant on him for their housing and livelihood.
Do not guilt trip or shame people who are attempting to separate the art from the artist. allow people to love what they love about the novels, comics, and media adaptations, value the friendships that they have made because of them, and keep the joy that those projects brought them. Do not let Neil Gaiman's behaviour rob generations of fans of the stories that meant so much to them. he has already taken so much from so many; don't help him take more from yourself or others then he already has.
Do not invite him as a guest speaker to your events, a guest of honour at your conventions, or a guest lecturer at your institutions. without jeopardizing the financial future of your institution or theater, do not book speaking tours, book signings, launch parties, etc. as these events have proved to be a fertile hunting ground and provide ongoing income directly to Neil Gaiman.
If you reblog (and I sincerely hope that you will) please keep the tags intact. The goal is to continue centering the voices of survivors and attempt to limit Neil Gaiman's access to vulnerable women, particularly those in fandom.

Evidence that I'm cool and hip with the kids at almost 39, but also true to my roots and still obsessed with Commonwealth rock bands that arose in the 1980s, just as I arose.
"femininomenon" is the best Chappell Roan song. It's the first one I heard and I still think it's the best one. What a banger.

Okay, so:
Latin has this word, sic. Or, if we want to be more diacritically accurate, sīc. That shows that the i is long, so it’s pronounced like “seek” and not like “sick.”
You might recognize this word from Latin sayings like “sic semper tyrannis” or “sic transit gloria mundi.” You might recognize it as what you put in parentheses when you want to be pass-agg about someone’s mistakes when you’re quoting them: “Then he texted me, ‘I want to touch you’re (sic) butt.’”
It means, “thus,” which sounds pretty hoity-toity in this modren era, so maybe think of it as meaning “in this way,” or “just like that.” As in, “just like that, to all tyrants, forever,” an allegedly cool thing to say after shooting a President and leaping off a balcony and shattering your leg. “Everyone should do it this way.”
Anyway, Classical Latin somewhat lacked an affirmative particle, though you might see the word ita, a synonym of sic, used in that way. By Medieval Times, however, sic was holding down this role. Which is to say, it came to mean yes.
Ego: Num edisti totam pitam?
Tu, pudendus: Sic.
Me: Did you eat all the pizza?
You, shameful: That’s the way it is./Yes.
This was pretty well established by the time Latin evolved into its various bastard children, the Romance languages, and you can see this by the words for yes in these languages.
In Spanish, Italian, Asturian, Catalan, Corsican, Galician, Friulian, and others, you say si for yes. In Portugese, you say sim. In French, you say si to mean yes when you’re contradicting a negative assertion (”You don’t like donkey sausage like all of us, the inhabitants of France, eat all the time?” “Yes, I do!”). In Romanian, you say da, but that’s because they’re on some Slavic shit. P.S. there are possibly more Romance languages than you’re aware of.
But:
There was still influence in some areas by the conquered Gaulish tribes on the language of their conquerors. We don’t really have anything of Gaulish language left, but we can reverse engineer some things from their descendants. You see, the Celts that we think of now as the people of the British Isles were Gaulish, originally (in the sense that anyone’s originally from anywhere, I guess) from central and western Europe. So we can look at, for example, Old Irish, where they said tó to mean yes, or Welsh, where they say do to mean yes or indeed, and we can see that they derive from the Proto-Indo-European (the big mother language at whose teat very many languages both modern and ancient did suckle) word *tod, meaning “this” or “that.” (The asterisk indicates that this is a reconstructed word and we don’t know exactly what it would have been but we have a pretty damn good idea.)
So if you were fucking Ambiorix or whoever and Quintus Titurius Sabinus was like, “Yo, did you eat all the pizza?” you would do that Drake smile and point thing under your big beefy Gaulish mustache and say, “This.” Then you would have him surrounded and killed.
Apparently Latin(ish) speakers in the area thought this was a very dope way of expressing themselves. “Why should I say ‘in that way’ like those idiots in Italy and Spain when I could say ‘this’ like all these cool mustache boys in Gaul?” So they started copying the expression, but in their own language. (That’s called a calque, by the way. When you borrow an expression from another language but translate it into your own. If you care about that kind of shit.)
The Latin word for “this” is “hoc,” so a bunch of people started saying “hoc” to mean yes. In the southern parts of what was once Gaul, “hoc” makes the relatively minor adjustment to òc, while in the more northerly areas they think, “Hmm, just saying ‘this’ isn’t cool enough. What if we said ‘this that’ to mean ‘yes.’” (This is not exactly what happened but it is basically what happened, please just fucking roll with it, this shit is long enough already.)
So they combined hoc with ille, which means “that” (but also comes to just mean “he”: compare Spanish el, Italian il, French le, and so on) to make o-il, which becomes oïl. This difference between the north and south (i.e. saying oc or oil) comes to be so emblematic of the differences between the two languages/dialects that the languages from the north are called langues d’oil and the ones from the south are called langues d’oc. In fact, the latter language is now officially called “Occitan,” which is a made-up word (to a slightly greater degree than that to which all words are made-up words) that basically means “Oc-ish.” They speak Occitan in southern France and Catalonia and Monaco and some other places.
The oil languages include a pretty beefy number of languages and dialects with some pretty amazing names like Walloon, and also one with a much more basic name: French. Perhaps you’ve heard of it, n'est-ce pas?
Yeah, eventually Francophones drop the -l from oil and start saying it as oui. If you’ve ever wondered why French yes is different from other Romance yeses, well, now you know.
I guess what I’m getting at is that when you reblog a post you like and tag it with “this,” or affirm a thing a friend said by nodding and saying “Yeah, that”: you’re not new
