Oh, Tumblr

There are a few things I am not fond of with Tumblr in its current state.

I am not going to go into great detail here, as this is not a flame post, more of a mention that there has never been a better time than 20 years ago to begin a self-plublishing journey, self-hosting and self-developing tools and taking advantage of open source technologies and open protocols that interoperate across enclaves, rather than encouraging their silo.

The second best time is, of course, right now.

Describe Las Vegas to a five year old child.

Las Vegas is a big city in the desert, where people go to have fun and see cool things. It's famous for its bright lights and big buildings called casinos. Inside the casinos, there are lots of games you can play, like slot machines and card games. They also have shows with music and dancing, and sometimes even acrobats and magicians! People dress up in their nice clothes and go out to see the shows and play games. It can be a lot of fun for grown-ups, but it's not a place for little kids like you. But if you ever get to go when you're older, you'll get to see all the bright lights and have a lot of fun.

CES 2023 Happened. I think.

I attended CES 2023. I live in Las Vegas, I am a computer engineer sometimes, it makes sense to do so, especially since the annual alumni badge is offered gratis. Last year, CES 2022, was a combination of dismal and surreal, with what has to have been a disingenuous 40,000 person attendance number published by by the CTA and literal concrete rectangles where booths were pulled up and removed outright from the floors of the main halls. That pandemic and its aftermath. This year was not so bad, but I tried a little experiment. I did not take any pictures. No videos, no tweets (almost none, essentially no tweets), no chasing down products or demos, and I actually did not try too hard to meet up with people unless they also tried. They mostly did not. It was the best CES ever.

Another one in the history books. Lots and lots of people without masks (I wore one most of the time if I was in the crowds, which is not sufficient of course), lots and lots of hype, we shall see what ships and what does not. I took zero pictures the whole time. I let other people do that work, I enjoyed running into people I know, meeting people I didn´t, and taking some mental snapshots of the state of innovation. It´s very repetitive.

Still here, and then some

As 2022 draws to a close, I am drawing lines in the sand and filling them in with disappointment and frustration, because social media has been our undoing. I am typing this on a social media site, right? Well, Tumblr has always been something of an outlier, and while many probably thought it was gone completely, here it is, and if they do indeed implement an ActivityPub connector, well hey, they enter the so-called fediverse sprinting. I am returning to self-publishing, but some of the old school tools that do work and are worthwhile (Tumblr, Medium, Flickr, to name a very small few) will continue to be a part of my toolbox, along with the new stuff, some of which I am attempting to be a part of launching. More on that later, in the mean time, let us make 2023 a year where billionaires stop forcing us Move Fast and Break Things on us for their own financial interests. Take back the internet.
