Trying something new.

I always wanted to have a proper Art Blog, but I never knew what that meant. Typically most art blogs boil down to fancy art galleries, highlighting the artist's best work, some nice sketches, and wips, and the occasional text post with some q&a. For most of my time here on the internet, I've been mainly posting images. I rarely write anything, because I was really bad at it, I'm still bad at it. Of course, you can't improve if you don't take the time to practice. So I decided to revive this little blog in order to start a mini-project, for fun.

I'm currently in my senior year in college, and thankfully I managed to learn something about drawing and illustration, even if it is just a little. I wanted to share some of the projects I've been working on over the semester, in the hopes of better illustrating (hehe) what I've learned over the years studying Illustration. Frankly, I've always wanted an excuse to start a blog, so what better way than to revive an old one for the 4th time! If third times the charm, the fourth time must mean it's very lucky, I hope.

Book Cover Project

So this one was a fairly easy project, all we had to do is pick an artist we like, read a few articles about their life and come up with a brilliant book cover and double-page spread about the artist's life.

Simple right?

Well, it helps when you already know the artist, read every article, and kept up with their exhibitions tour. My artist was Kehinde Wiley, a famous American portrait artist.

So the first thing I do, is make a nice mood board. Everyone loves a good mood board. So sort of had this idea from Art vs The Artist, when you take a picture of yourself and surround yourself with you art. Wiley really looks like his art lol. I also made a mini color palate (I sort of used this palette.) Also did some random practice spot paintings.

Everyone's favorite, THUMNAILS! I always make a few thumbnails, focusing mostly on composition. Also, keep in mind, this is a book cover. So you have to consider not just the cover, but the back and the spine. So I picked the top right one, cuz I like it, I can't really explain it, but it looks good. Anyway, let's move on to the spread.

Ok, not the best thumbnails, but they don't have to be good. The same thing, you have to think about how your illustration will look when you open the book. When you're doing a spread it's important that the focus point of your illustration doesn't land in the middle. So I didn't save much of my progress, so I'm gonna do the classic meme of "Sketch and Final". So here we do.

Ok, so if you made it this far, I'm so sorry, you've learned nothing, and that's due to me not being good at explaining stuff, I just like showing stuff. But I hope I've entertained you? Maybe? I don't know, let me know if this was helpful or not. I'll probably do another one next week, probably.

Hopefully, I'll get better at explaining things and such.

I was recently given a critique at my university gallery and I was told that my work was too derivative and emulates too much on the original reference. I internalized that critique and now I’m questioning if I should be pursuing an art career.

I still want to draw but I’ve lost a lot of confidence in my work. I’ve considered changing my practice all together and pursuing other creative fields like writing.

I feel slightly depressed.
