This is really happening! Sitting here on the first day of residency thinking about how surreal this moment is. Who would have thought a jock (with good grades) would be working on a doctorate? "Not I," says the one-eyed cat to the deaf rat. The point is... There's no time like the present to get done what you've only dreamed of doing AND... Put no limitations I m what God will do for you. I heard an entrepreneur answer a question about goal-setting... His response: "I don't set goals." His reasoning is that he doesn't want to put a cap on what he has coming to him. He wants "all God wants to give him." And, while I may not agree with not setting goals, I do agree with the concept. I ask you: What could you achieve if you removed the lid on your blessings? If you stopped thinking about what you could achieve on your own and instead focused on receiving all your Higher Power wants to give you, where will you be? Anyone notice that your elementary-educated children know how to use new software (this was her first time on Zoom) better than college-educated parents? Classes have finally started... But #schoolneverends in this house. Or rather education is a way of life. The Princess has read about a book a day minimum; completed two workbooks (one of handwriting and one on 1st grade skills); and, flash cards up to 20 (addition and subtraction). Not bragging. (I'm not that kinda parent, am !?) Shout out to my education-focused parents who know there's a difference between formal education, self education, and continuing education. I'm not worried about her learning thru a tablet - She's been doing that since she was 2 when I downloaded kid's songs, finger painting, and shapes to her Samsung (no iPads in this house). I do wish she could play with her friends, though. In time. In time. For now, I must figure out how to create more experiences without putting our lives on jeopardy. PLEASE SHARE THIS: Five years ago on this date, I restarted my journey in recovery. Drugs beat me up for years... I lost friends... opportunities... time... and a lot of money. But with the help of a program, I have been able to kick addiction's butt. I won't say I'm cured. I will say I'm a grateful recovering addict. Early in my journey, I decided to be an example of what can happen when you commit to being clean... I searched for stories of successful business owners who'd overcome addiction. I Googled convicted felons who'd turned their lives around. Their stories inspired me. I even interviewed an author named Tracey Syphax after reading his book, From the Block to the Boardroom. I knew I could change. I knew I could survive. But I wanted to thrive! And over the last 5 years, I've accomplished some things: - rebuilt my relationship with my son - raised my daughter after her mothered died to addiction - published 4 books - became a best-selling author - got paid to speak and tell my story - earned a Master's degree and enrolled in a PhD program - held a job for more than 18 months - earned my father's trust again - worked with felons in re-entry programs - worked with addicts - helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars working with a local company - paid off some of my debt - reconnected and strengthened my relationship with God - built a small business - developed a Life Skills program for Boys and Girl Club - and, successfully abstained from using drugs and alcohol All thanks to a program, a support system, and a God who never quit working or believing in me. Oh, and I wrote all about who to make the shifts in my thinking and behavior in my first book - Unlimited Potential: How to Stop Living with Fear, Doubt, and Uncertainty.
