Franklin McCain

This sketch of the American pioneer civil rights activist is when he was around 19 or 20 years old in 1960. I’ve given him more of a pencil-mustache which is from an earlier era.

The Dancer

Sketched over images from Preston Blair book on cartooning. To see how these translated into action. I used my phone (App is Autodesk Sketchbook) It’s rough but I like the effect. The roughness of marks, that I should have cleaned up, have given me ideas for confetti or rain. I thought I’d throw it up, as is, for this reason.

Delaney

I liked the pose of this local musician. I’m not sure what kind of hat this is, but it’s from around the 1940′s era I think.

Eleanor Parker

She was dubbed “the woman of a thousand faces” and this is one of them. There are a lot of flaws in this sketch of this famous actress. Individually the parts are quite good, but overall I think some of the components are out of sync with one another. I think these flawed drawings are the ones I learn the most from.

A quick loose finger drawing on my phone. No fixes, changes or tidy up. I love the lines you get from free drawing like this.

Model Girl

I wish I’d been able to see more of the top of this model. It looks like a halter design with no back. I’d like to think I’ve captured a little of her attitude in this sketch.

Autumn Girl

A little finger drawing playing with colors. I love asymmetry in design and like to use it. It’s right out of the head with no copying so right now she’s a favorite.

Bronze Greek

This is a sketch of one of the depictions of Hercules. He was a seriously hairy dude by all accounts. Seems the Greeks were into head-bands long before the Hippies.

Girl

I don’t know who this actress is, but I loved her hair. The hair-part may open me up to getting sued, because she looks like she has a receding hairline, but I drew it how I saw it.

Caligula 

I loved this Roman guy’s outfit, the chest, shoulder ornaments, and the laurel head gear. I was happy with the sketch.

Chic African Inspired Head-Wrap

I love this look. The head-wear creates poise, by adding height to an already elegant lady. It gives her a statuesque quality which I found impossible to pass-up. The drawing ignores the color factor, which would normally be the obvious feature, and concentrates on the lines.

Ballerina

If I had more time I’d love to study movement more in art. The corset pulled up tight across her back was the inspiration for drawing her. I think the shadowing is the best feature of this sketch.

Dude

A copy of a pose from a fashion page. I was happy with the jacket but the shirt collar isn’t sitting right. The ear isn’t my best, but overall I’m quite happy with result.

Bird’s Nest Hair Girl

The hair and eyes have got all of my attention. The sketch has a fussy look which is the downside of trying to be tidy. The reason why I speed-sketch whenever I can.
