A lot of people forget that Across the Spiderverse has one final story, and that is Gwen's story. She is one of the main characters in this movie and her family conflict is the story that opens and closes the story.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the movie, we see the aspects of Gwen's environment and herself that she lost after Peter's death.
We see her distancing herself from her friends and her band.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We are also shown that she no longer has family dinners with Peter and Aunt May, and that she no longer even "coexists" with his father as she once did.
Tumblr media
These are things she loses, and the memory is still there, showing us as an audience why she tends to isolate herself from her surroundings.
Throughout the movie, we see her in stressful situations (wanting to see Miles and having a mission at the same time, losing the mission and not being able to solve it on her own, fighting with Miguel, among many others), we see her in an environment that stresses her, and as a result, we see her more isolated.
Tumblr media
Even the things Miles knows about her new life (such as her new friendships, how long she has been in the Spider Society, and even her relationship with her father) are things that seem to "slip out" of her mind, not that she would want to say them openly. Although we see that she is comfortable with her friends, she still keeps things to herself and avoids relaxing at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the movie, when Gwen decides to support Miles over Miguel and the Spider-Society, we see her coming to terms with her surroundings.
Tumblr media
She has a conversation with her father that resolves the current family conflict, and we even see her become more confident (starting a "revolution" against an entire organization).
Tumblr media
Thanks to Across the Spiderverse for sharing this story with us.

I think that another element enforced Ekko's decision to return to his world was that, while he clearly enjoyed his time with Powder, she wasn't his. We see it in that while she uses her genius to help Ekko and Heimerdinger develop the Z-drive, she doesn't do it because she has a passion for it, she does it because a loved one asked her to.
In her world, she already has it pretty good. Life is improving for Zaun, she has her family, she has her Ekko who she is content to act more as his assistant, developing the ideas he comes up with. She likes her little lot in life.
But our Ekko's Powder is Jinx, whose mind is awhirl with changing ideas and chaotic imagination. Who can come up with the bonkers idea of turning her hideout into a goddamn war balloon. Who puts her artistry into her weapons, making it more a part of herself.
That Powder was born of general peace and comfort and deserves the Ekko who shares that experience. But our Ekko, the Boy Savior, knows that despite their sordid history, he can relate more to Jinx than he ever could to Powder.

“Your ideas change the world. I can't shake the feeling that that's who you're supposed to be."
From what I can read, Ekko recognizes that Jinx was able to use her potential and thinks for a moment beyond the girl who is a criminal.

You know, one of the things I like most about them is that it seems like they don't want to be apart since they got back together

I think one of the best things about Gwen's story is how important color is to understanding the emotions of the characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even in the same scene the colors play a very important role to know how the dynamics of Gwen's emotions change.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dark colors for tense and stressful moments for Gwen. As well as the use of warm colors in moments of peace.

I'm obsessed with Gwen's hair in her memories, especially when it looks like she wears it dyed.

Talk about how amazing this friendship is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For starters, Miles is constantly jealous of Hobie. First when Gwen mentions that she no longer has friends, second when they have their first interaction and he realizes that Hobie is pretty cool. And he's jealous of that.
It's pretty funny to think that he even goes so far as to be curt in his interactions with him, but Hobie doesn't do that. He tries to talk to Miles and even jokes with him, and I have this theory that since it's obvious that Gwen won't stop talking about Miles, Hobie is also trying to impress Gwen's friend because he thinks he's pretty cool.
Anyway, everything changes when Hobie helps him just when Miles is feeling desperate.
I need to see more of this friendship in btsv.

Some of my Spiderband headcanons. Prt 1.
Tumblr media
Like many foursome friendships, this one is usually split into 2. Gwen and Hobie spend most of their time together for the band, but Miles and Pav hang out together most of the time. Miles' parents really like Pav because they think he's a good influence.
Hobie and Pav often "cancel" trips that the four of them have at the same time, just to leave Miles and Gwen alone.
Gwen and Pav often have lunch together because they both love to talk about everything that's going on in their lives when they don't see each other, even if it's only for two days.
Miles took a long time to warm up to Hobie, so he was very reserved with him on the first few trips, until Hobie decided to ask him out separately.

I think the scenes where they say goodbye are some of the best, not only visually, but also story-wise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Gwen says goodbye, the environment on her side is full of colors, which I think represents the opportunities that can open up for her when she leaves Miles behind. And on the other side, Miles' side is much darker and neutral colors, representing what it's like for him to have Gwen say goodbye.
Also in the story, Gwen doesn't look back. She says goodbye and never looks back. Even when Miles stops being invisible so he can say goodbye, she doesn't look back.
On the other hand, the scene where Miles says goodbye has no difference in color, the shot is different, yes, but I doubt they are looking for something else in terms of color.
But there is a very visual change in the story. Miles says goodbye to Gwen in front of her, something he couldn't do before. And Gwen looks back. She no longer wants to leave Miles behind.
To me, that speaks volumes about the change in their dynamic.
