Storm Warning is a pretty good 7.5/10 story

Keep in mind that the scores can change easily so they don't matter that much and i just use them for convenience, organizing my thoughts.

I just need start by saying that the contrast of this 8th Doctor and Blood of the Daleks 8th Doctor is insane, a commenter said on my previous "review" that it was because of the events that happened during the Charly arc (which i have a vague idea of some because of spoilers) and it shows, he is more energetic and alien and it's lovely, sorry for being biased towards doctor's that reflect my personality :(

Abput Charly, goddammit I love her, she feels different from the other companions on the new series, but also really familiar, she is more lovely, joyful, youthful, and that adventuress part of her personality is my favorite.

That's all i have to say substantial about this story, the main duo is already iconic and fun, but trying to squeeze a little bit, is a fun story, just not really special, i liked the alien race that i forgot the name (is not because they are not memorable, is my memory thats bad), they delivered some interesting questions regarding the actions of the other characters that even though are good are a bit too altruistic for the story at hand and made the message fall a bit flat by result, but i still like them.

That's sort of it by now, I'll not review every story on the Charly arc, but the key ones like Chimes, Zagreus, Scherzo, Minuet in Hell and others i will so... I dunno.

Blood of the Daleks is a good 6.5/10 story, not gonna lie!

This is not a review, rather a stupid rant.

I mean, i think i need to give context that im not only a guy who was introduced to DW by the constantly high stakes epical, emocionaly grandiose New Who but also i'm kind of inclined of seeing the franchise in a way that the modern show taught me, the audios are my introduction to Classic Who (as counterintuitive that sounds), and why? I don't know! My hyperfixation has been leading me to the audios for a while now and im more willing to listen to them.

So, given context, i liked the story!! The thing is it didn't interested me for a long while, i can't exactly pin point why besides the context i gave earlier, i guess is just that, my brain is to "newhopilled" for classic who.

The way the doctor is more eerie and talkative instead of the hyper energetic adhd ritalin filled modern counterparts is also a thing that i find cool but it did off put me, also because i feel this deep connection with the modern character because I'm also a hyper energetic adhd ritalin filled individual, so thats a factor that plays on my first impressions of the eight doctor, even though im still really interested in him and i will listen more, mainly the Charlie arch, im not expecting to impress me but im expecting at least to enjoy.

About Lucie, i did kinda like her, mainly because she is the blueprint for my favorite Doctor Who companion misses Donna Noble, but also her relationship with the Doc annoyed me because of how much they hated each other, i think its because they are setting an arc that in the end both are going to like each other but for now i didn't hit me, still like her quips and answers i just feel that listen more i should.

Another piece of context i should give is that the previous and first audio i listened from beginning to end is the epic box set Victory of the Doctor, and that set my expectations too high since that story is a 8 or 9/10 masterclass on how to write threatening Daleks, so of course it was so good it influenced my view on the daleks on a completely unrelated episode, it was just that good, I still liked them, they were the same threatening Daleks as always, and this is just an introduction on a story with kind of lower stakes from your typical Dalek affair.

Overall it was a good time, i was left a bit underwhelmed because of my expectations and previous knowledge on the series but I'm expecting to like the series and the 8th Doctor as a whole, i expect to grow on me? No. Not exactly. I'm not expecting much in fact, ill try to go blind to the new series.

Which is idiotic either way because i just listened this one to test the audiobook app that im using to organize the audios (it's pretty amazing btw, the name is Smart AudioBook Player) and im going to start on the Charlie arch.

If you're reading this don't expect a review for every single audio, but i will release at the end of the charlie arch (whenever that is, executive dysfunction is a bitch) a tier list with my favorite stories including this one and Victory of the Doctor.

Now that i discovered how to [DOWNLOAD LEGALY] the big finish audios i spended the entire day download most of the first and second eight doctors range, the charlotte pollard spin-off and some of the early monthly range that people always love to gush about.

I listened to blood of the daleks and it's... Cool! Certainly didn't impress me like Victory of the doctor did but it's 2 different eras so i can't exactly complain. I will listen to the Charlie arch first mainly cause of Scherzo, Zagreus, and of course because of Charlotte, I'm thinking about doing a tier list when I'm finished but i don't know about that, it depends if the hyperfixation will stay any longer.

THis fucking thing is so good i'm shocked! I'm still listening the final audio but its so intense and dark and it leaves me helpless, of course by beiung an audio im kinda lost on some details, and also i didn't listen to the other Valerie audios so im lost on the plot but the basics i get! I already love Valerie, The Daleks are so fucking unstopable its fucking scary, LISTEN TO IT, IS SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

É um jogo que requer muito mais atenção do que eu em teoria ia conseguir dar, mas não, o jogo me grudou e chamou a atenção pra caralho. Watching Fantano the way god intended

relistening to some of the earlier Big Finish stories is so so important for the reminder that a lot of dr who is actually bad and it’s an absolutely necessary part of the dr who ecosystem. imagine if every story were a scherzo or the natural history of fear or jubilee. dr who is healthiest when it’s mostly shitty and then they hit you with one of the most incredible insane things you’ve ever encountered. and right after that it’s bad again

Que surpresa, o fã de Ska gosta do livro sobre Ska, quem diria.

In Defense of Ska tá sendo uma leitura foda, bem mais do que eu esperava, no minimo esperava que seria uma boa leitura mas não marcante, o que não justificaria os 130 reais gastos nele, então ter me supreendido foi bem melhor do que parece.

O que eu mais tô adorando nesses livros é o quanto pra mim eles deixam toda a cultura do Ska mais profunda e interesse apenas por contar essas pequenas histórias de bandas tentando sobreviver em turnês e audiencias indo a loucura com esses shows energéticos. Essas histórias de algum modo deixam essa música que de longe soa alegre bem mais profunda, ou pelo menos culturalmente profunda.

Eu acho que a minha favorita é a história do Gilmans, que devo admitir não tive uma boa primeira impressão por que eu ouvi falar pela primeira vez deles pela história do Green Day e achei eles bem cuzoes, mas lendo sobre a banda Operation Ivy e sua profunda ligação com o lugar, e como lá não parecia uma banda de musica e uma audiência, parecia um grupo de amigos se reunindo pra tocar música, tomar umas e se divertirem, a parte sobre como o Gilmans era um lugar pras pessoas estranhas, pessoas negras, pessoas queer, um espaço seguro pra essas pessoas que muitas vezes eram rejeitadas pelo que eram, e pela música se uniam.

Esse senso de união bizarramente fez eu pensar na cena nacional de ska, as bandas e o que eu tô fazendo pra espalhar a palavra, eu só tô aqui escutando passivamente algo que é muito além da música, me isolando, sendo que vendo o caso do Gilman, ele é literalmente o oposto, um lugar de estar lá em união por um motivo em comum, eu queria estar lá, ajudando, não no Gilmans.

Esse livro não só me lembra mas também me ensina o por que eu amo Ska, por que eu coloco acima de qualquer gênero e falo que é meu favorito, e se só nos primeiros capítulos ele já me deixa assim, imagino nos próximos, é um livro bem longuinho e ja to pensando em reler.

In Defense of Ska - Primeiras Impressões

SKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Eu ando obcecado por esse género no último ano, e quase ao mesmo tempo que ouvi falar de ska eu ouvi falar nesse livro, que conta uma série de histórias e anedotas e ensaios com relação ao género tentando defender ele das constantes coices que ele de maneira injustiça-da toma desde o final dos anos 90, e obviamente virou uma das coisas que eu mais queria ler de longe, e agora tenho ele em mãos, mesmo que o preço tenha sido salgado e a experiencia de entrega uma bosta.

Uma coisa que me deixou feliz logo de cara foi o préfacio escrito pelo Jeff Rosenstock, o artista que eu to mais obcecado nesse último ano e que tem uma ligação profunda com ska, tendo feito alguns dos melhores albuns do genero e é claro que eu adorei, ele fala como o cara mais legal que tu vai conhecer na vida, cheio de senso de humor, energia, não é atoa que ele tá falando de ska. Uma coisa que eu percebi no prefacio é como eu me indentifico com o genero de maneira profunda, ele descreve:

"Há décadas que eles cagam no género que [...] evoluiu para criar um espaço para exilados ansiosos que se sentem melhor quando eles estão numa roupa de dinossauro e tocam música com os amigos com uma audiência de pares que brincam com um boneco inflável de piscina e cantam juntos uma música sobre tacos, ou coisa assim. [...] Ska continua dando abrigo aos esquisitões do mundo."

Óbvio que não é tudo nessa frase que eu me identifico mas o sentimento dela sim, como o moleque isolado e esquisito que tem muita dificuldade em ter amigos, vendo também como o género tá abrindo espaço pra pessoas neuro-divergentes como no caso da banda We Are the Union eu me sinto mais ligado emocionalmente com o género ainda, mas essa é mais uma anedota pessoal do que algo que descreve o livro.

Eu acho que ele seria uma boa leitura pra novatos, pelo menos até o momento por que até onde li, clarifica bastante coisa e explica alguns dos preconceitos que o gênero sofre, como no caso do Dan Deacon que ele descreveu como a midia de música hipster como Stereogum e Pitchfork cai pra cima do gênero e ajudou a gerar ess imagem negativa que ele tem, que graças a deus parece estar morrendo aos poucos com o crescimento da cena DIY americana nos últimos anos, mas não é só de Yankee fdp que se vive de Ska, o autor também descreve brevemente como na america latina ska ainda é popular a ponto de lotar casas de shows.

Até o momento é isso, tô bem no começo ainda mas super empolgado pra terminar de ler, tô marcando todos os nomes de bandas pra eu dar uma ouvida mais tarde, ska é muito foda!

Mó vontade de matar aula hoje

Eu hoje, já que comecei a faculdade decidi também fazer uma carteira na biblioteca pública de BH, já que é bem próximo da escola. Eu tava animado pra fazer isso a tempos ja que eu queria pegar uma coisa que me fascinou muito lá desde que fui pela primeira vez, sendo essa a coleção de 1950 á 1952 de Peanuts. Quando eu vi aquilo meus olhos brilharam, e bem...

Eu peguei, essas são minhas primeiras impressões!

Algo que já achei bizarro logo de cara foi o quão as primeiras HQs são bem... Cínicas é a palavra? Tipo, os personagens são mais grosseiros do que achei que fossem ser, mais casca grossa, mais sarcásticos, tipo, ta todo mundo tentando sacanear todo mundo, ate o Snoop sofre disso, o que fizeram com meu mano Snoop não está escrito 😭. Outra coisa estranha que notei também é o tratamento do Schulz quanto a personagens femininas, é de 1950 então obviamente vai ser mais machista, mas aqui é frequente, tipo, eu sei que os meninos também são tratados de maneira cínica mas não se compara com as mulheres, de certo modo sorrateiras, barulhentas, indecisas, e isso é mostrado desde as primeiras tirinhas.

O clima dessas tiras são bem mais dark do que imaginei que fosse ser, não é humor negro, é só que não é o que eu esperava tendo em vista que a serie veio a ser muito sanitizada e bem mais reflexiva do que o quão radical algumas dessas tirinhas podem ser, o que eu notei é que esses personagens ao invés de representações de crianças são mais representações de adultos com mentalidade de criança do pré primario e isso eu... Gostei em algumas partes mas de novo, achei estranho.

Mas nem tudo são espinhos, eu ainda achei super charmoso e divertido, e em partes carinhoso e super fofo, algumas das melhores tirinhas são mais simples e depois que introduzem a Violet com seus bolinhos de lama tudo fica bem menos dark, ela aparece pra sero tira gosto, eu tô muito empolgado pros personagens base da serie aparecerem como o Linus, meu precioso.

Até o momento só li até ai, não sei se vou atualizar mais, mas até o momento to adorando e surper recomendo, mesmo com seus problenas estranhos, charmoso, fofo, engraçado, mesmo sendo cinico e bruto as vezes ainda é super adorável.
