“Well I never disagreed with that uhh sentiment. I’m just less vulgar about it.” Dan shrugged and took a sip of his 4 o’clock coffee. “Besides, it’s got a few charms. Some nice dilapidated old buildings, some trees.. But those wear off around the time you start looking for a job.”

He nodded “Oh yeah. Got me all pumped up now.” Danny said with a barely noticeable amount of excitement in his voice. “I think it’s usually locked but-” He lifted up the side of his jacket and reached to his belt. “Got some bolt cutters.” He said now holding them with a quick grin. “Hopefully these are big enough..” Dan then promptly walked right over the edge and slid down the steeply slopped hill, nearly losing his footing at the end but managing to catch himself. He brushed off his pants and straightened his jacket as he waited for Jake to catch up. Dan started looking around for just a second before he stopped dead.
“It’s... open?” The rusty metal gate situated just outside the mine entrance to prevent any large wildlife or kids from getting in, was wide open, leaving only the hole. It seemed to exude a chill air. Dan noticed a dark spot on the ground in front of him but wasn’t knowledgeable enough to understand what it was. Dan found his eyes drawn back to the darkness...
continued from here
Jake looked immediately enamored at the sight of the mine. There was perhaps a second of just stunned silence on his part before he could manage to speak again. “Dude, you don’t understand! Stuff like this is a gold… well I mean I guess technically this is a coal mine but like, You don’t see this at all anymore!” He took a moment to regain his composure before he tried to speak again.
“So every now and then old companies and businesses close down, pack up shop, and sell off all of their extra supplies or move it to other projects in the business or whatever. But occasionally they don’t have any options to do so. The only things they can do from that point forward are waste more time trying to find a way to get rid of their surplus gear or, slightly less commonly, just abandon it and move on. Now modern day stuff and to a lesser extent random bits from the 50′s are whatever. But these older supplies from colonial towns and pre World War two stuff is huge to find. Like anything that can’t be sold as an antique or pawned is hot stuff in metalworking.”

“Oh... Yeah that makes sense..” Dan scratched his ear uncertainly. The mine was different that he remembered, like it was a different shape, or smaller. He couldn’t quite tell from up here though. Dan didn’t know what to say for a moment so instead he simply looked ahead and listened to the birds and the wind. “Imagine this place when it was open. Bunch of dudes running around, hauling dirt and yelling over banging screeching metal..” Dan stretched and breathed in deeply.
“Wait you mean we could still make money off this junk?” Dan never turns down work that pays. “I don’t know how much stuff is left from that long ago but if anywhere it’d be here. Or in the ravines at the east end of town.” He turned to look at Jake. “Well? Wanna check it out?”

There are two types of writers…
Writer A: “I’ve fleshed this character out to the point where they’re more real then I am. I know everything about them, including their blood type, their thirty-first favorite song, what they did for their sixth birthday, and which brand of apples they prefer.”
Writer B: “This character exists as a full person in my head, but I know absolutely nothing about them. Once I forced them to talk about themselves,  and they simultaneous lied about their past and told me accurate trivia facts I don’t remember learning.”

“Um” Dan tilted his head slightly and looked at Jake as he rambled for a moment, quite puzzled by his friend’s sudden interest in mining equipment. When Jake started apologizing, he had to contain a chuckle. “Pfft I mean.. If that got you going just wait till you see the thing itself” Dan closed his eyes and smiled as he pointed behind him towards the next attraction. “It’s pretty cool.” He gave Jake a quick tap on the arm in an effort to reassure him.
“Now this is the really old mine. In more recent times, workers used to ride the trolley in the tunnel beneath Town Centre straight into the other uh old mine.” Dan explained as they came to the drop overlooking the mine entrance. “Then the subway flooded along with some of the mine in uhhh.. sometime- I don’t remember. All before I was born.” Dan shrugged. “One of the old people in town can talk your ear off about it, if ya want.”

Dan was thankful for his days off, but they never seemed like enough. Tired as he was, he was happy to be hanging out with Jake again. Adulthood has a way of eating up all your time. Just now they were crossing an old bridge that leads to the old mine, and beyond that, the State Park.
“But yeah, there’s some cool stuff out here. Old stuff. Lotsa history out here.” The afternoon fog and the creaking of the bridge as they crossed over reminded Dan of the roleplaying games he used to play with his friends. He would have invited Jake if he lived here then, probably. “Oh ya know what else is cool? Rapiers. Think I’m gonna buy a rapier. Just to walk around with it, ya know?”

“Hmm. I might have guessed mage to be honest, because of uhh books.. But you could totally be a rouge! Rouge bookseller. Dive into ruins in search of old books. Sell banned books on the black market. Look out for the witch hunters.” Dan looked around a moment, for witch hunters, as Jake caught up to him. “This town is very weird. Like check this out-” Dan gestured to a line of rusty mine carts that had been there at the top of the hill as long as he could remember.
“Mine carts. There’s is not even a rail up here and the mine is still a ways away. How’d these get here? Who knows.” Dan leaned over to look inside the carts that were still upright. Nothin. “That’s pretty much Possum Springs in a nutshell.”

“Fencing, man I should have done that.. I used to be a uhh strictly greatswords kinda guy heh heh.” Dan scratched his ear. “You grow up I guess. Change.” Dan took his time climbing the hill on the other side of the bridge. There was no proper path this way anymore and It had rained recently so the ground was wet, just slightly, but Dan watched his steps nonetheless.
“Yup yup. The mine was the first thing.. Well actually- the first thing was beaver pelts. Way back in 1793. This place use to be all trees and springs. And beavers, teeming with ‘em. We slaughtered them all and tore off their skins...”
”Oh and possums, evidently. Possum pelts aren’t worth much though.”
