I did not expect to wake up and see the love for Syaoran :') Thank you! Prepare yourself for the long ramble

Syaoran was originally made for this MK1 au (called The Abomination au) I was trying to work on where I changed a lot of the MK1 story events and added a completely different villain from the og plot. I originally made it because I felt like there was a lot of missed potential in MK1's story but then it slowly became more self-indulgent lol. In this au, Syaoran is the Lin Kuei brothers' childhood friend. Syaoran is a member of the Wen Cheng, a Earthrealm clan of powerful magical users and archivists of Earthrealm's history. He is the youngest child of the former Wen Cheng grandmaster. His older half-brother, Longwei, is the current grandmaster. Syaoran's birth was a result of an extramarital affair between the former grandmaster and a woman from outside the clan. The revelation of this affair was devastating and the grandmaster's wife, Longwei's mother, completely abandoned the clan and disappeared without a trace. The only reasons why Syaoran was accepted into the clan were 1. to prevent further dishonor and 2. while Longwei had not inherited their father's ink magic, Syaoran had. All of this led Longwei to despise his brother. He saw Syaoran as the sole reason his mother had left and feared that his father would replace him for Syaoran one day. While Syaoran had always wanted a positive relationship with his brother, Longwei wanted him gone. As a child, Syaoran was never treated as an individual, but rather a tool or accessory to compensate for Longwei's lack of magic. He was shy, lacked self-confidence, and was a doormat towards his brothers, as he desperately wanted Longwei's favor. It wasn't until meeting the Lin Kuei trio that he started to gain more confidence in himself. With them, he felt like an actual person and they kinda pushed him to be stronger and more self-assured. Bi-Han especially, in the most Bi-Han way possible of course. Things really took a turn when a certain incident happened where Longwei essentially abandoned Syaoran and left him for dead. Syaoran only made it out alive due to the Lin Kuei trio's interference. That incident really opened up his eyes to how much Longwei hated him. After that, his attitude made a complete 180. He pushed and trained himself to be the best fighter he could be, just to prove to himself his own worth. He also became way more confrontational with Longwei. Even now with Longwei as grandmaster, Syaoran is not afraid to challenge his authority and keep his brother's power in check. It has only gotten worse now that Longwei has developed an insatiable hunger for power. That's the quick run-down of his lore so far! Thank you for taking an interest in him! I now feel more confident in posting things for this au! I have another mk oc and hopefully I can post about that fellow soon.

As a way of celebrating, I will be posting my sexuality/gender-related headcanons of various Mortal Kombat sources, starting with:

MORTAL KOMBAT (2011) LGBT HEADCANONS

(Note: this won't be including guest characters)

Tbh Baraka doesn't have anything interesting going on with him until MK1, but I personally like to headcanon that tarkatans don't have gender norms in a way that we do; reproduction for them is not an important priority, just something you can do if you like how the other one smells or something.

Tarkatans are intersex by default, including Baraka. The "genders" are usually assumed by non-tarkatans, in Baraka's case, by Shao Kahn, who only wished to see male figures in his army.

Btw, tarkatans themselves never refer to each other by pronouns. They do it either by simply saying the name, or making a sound that is only associated with a particular individual.

You already know. The non-binary monarch (king but gn) of MK.

With so many souls living inside you it's only a matter of time when you just start using They/them. Something also tells me that Ermac doesn't mind being called other pronouns – well, not like they care.

I'm sorry, you cannot convince me that Jade "I care more about my friend's safety than myself's" from Edenia likes men. I can go and write a whole rant about Jade and Kotal and how I fucking hate that stupid Walmart Sonic on steroids (not only for his romantic ties though), but I'll save that for later, maybe. Until then, Jade developed a crush on Kitana over time and doesn't wish to let go of her since she's the only reason Jade keeps going everyday. Alas, the feelings are not mutual, but Jade knows better than to envy Liu Kang. She's happy that her friend found her love, and she wishes one day to let go and find her own, too.

Kabal is a gay man, but not a closeted one. He had partners throughout the spam of his adult life, from Black Dragon to police forces.

There were rumors going around inside of Black Dragon that he and Kano had a affair. Whether or not this is true is left for speculation, as neither Kabal or Kano wish to discuss such topic.

What is true, however, is his work romance with Kurtis. At first, Kabal actively denied his attraction towards him, but learned to be more truthful to himself. He had a hard time opening up though, as he did have bitter aftertaste of his previous relationships, but somehow things were pretty decent, mostly thanks to Stryker's demeanor.

Every iteration of Kenshi is demisexual in my eyes. Bad part? I can't really explain my reasoning. Sometimes you just see a character and immediately assume things about them.

Maybe it's due to Kenshi not really having any romantic interests prior to MKX, as far as I can recall. Maybe it's just an ace-dar (as someone who's on the asexual spectrum). Oh well, we'll never know.

Like with Kenshi, every iteration of Kung Lao is gay in my eyes.

I see it more as Kung Lao not realizing his sexuality yet as throughout his life he had no time to think about personal stuff. When he does realize, however, he'll view it as an advantage as monks are typically forbidden from getting married and having intercourse, thus meaning he will less likely be judged by his fellow ones. Yes, he'd plan on simply ignoring this aspect of himself as getting into a relationship would bring a lot of burden (and if Lao falls in love, he will fall HARD).

Mileena is canonically bi!! Duhh! She likes positive attention from anyone, regardless of the race or gender. Either way she will take advantage of the partner and eat them alive :)

She's also part tarkatan, which should technically make her intersex, but since Kitana's genes are the dominant ones, she's assigned female. However, she believes such limitations are stupid, so she uses She/they for herself. It makes her more proud of who she is.

Gods don't need s*x!! Also I think he's canonically genderfluid since he can be literally anyone.

Uhh idk that's it.

One of those times where I can't explain my reasoning... again.

I just feel like Rain liked the thought of absolute control ever since he was young, to the point where he wanted to control his own body's appearance. Even if he didn't realize it, he always wanted to have a body of man, to speak like a man and to be viewed as one as well. Once he finally reached his ideal physique, he felt like he was unstoppable.

... or something like that, lol.

I have this little headcanon that Shang Tsung gets bored very quickly. To cure his boredom he'd transform into one of his captured souls and go on with his day until he gets tired of that body too.

I’m gonna be honest I have really mixed feelings about raitana, the fans I’ve seen are super nice and stuff and its not a bad ship in the lore, but it just feels like NRS is making Kitana be a prize that the ‘chosen’ one of each era gets. Along with not giving her a lot of screen time except for being ogled or the sister moments (which I love don’t get me wrong) in the newest game it adds on to the feeling of just making her this bland trophy.

If they’re going for it being a canon relationship I hope they atleast let her have some scenes to shine on her own like they did Mileena or Li Mei before they get together.

Now that I think it over I think I’m just troubled by NRS’s possible handling of it, not the ship itself lol.

I think it’s said that Zikander is in outworld, from the royals and others dialogue they’re treated as outworlders, just not very commonly seen ones. Liu Kang has canonically mashed edenia into outworld for this timeline so it wouldn’t be unprecedented. It also has nobles (other Syzoth dialogue) and Umgadi ONLY take newborn noble girls specifically, it’s not like the constables. Along with other dialogue they also seem to have enough political power to be able to show public discontent with their ruler, so I think it’s safe to say while they aren’t particularly adored, we should put them on the level of the shokan and centurians in terms of power.

Kham being Umgadi gives us a bit of a clue on how Zatteran shapeshifting works and where it comes from though. I assume if it was present at birth the elites would just get rid of the child before it could be handed to the Umgadi and compromise them, so it must appear a bit later, probably around 3-6 since Syzoth mentions childhood bullies. If it’s a later transformation you’d figure they would have found a way to deal with that a while ago and get rid of them once they turned in the palace, right? There should be protocol in place, have an inside guy in the Umgadi to handle it, since it’s already confirmed they have a lot of corruption.

UNLESS they assume the nobles wouldn’t be able to be born a shapeshifter. And she was a completely unprecedented case. I feel like it’s the only way this would make sense. That led to my hc on how I think zatteran shapeshifting works and how Kham left alive (still a work in progress but here’s the jist of it)-

Back in the early EARLY days of outworld, proto zatteran society had a lot of shapeshifters and it was a very common ability, but when early edenians showed up and started conquering them, destroying their cities and forcing them underground, public opinion changed. Being forced into a new habitat led to a dark age for the zatterans, think the Bronze Age collapse if you want a historical example. During that time there was a mass genocide of the shapeshifters and blood purity became a big idea, the ones put in charge were the ones with the least shapeshifter blood, as they believed to be ‘pure’ of edenian corruption, even though shifting had nothing to do with edenian heritage. They would lead the charge in murdering shifters, The few that survived migrated to the borders of the underground, staying away from the general populace. Eventually Zatterans got used to their new home and started reestablishing civilization, the blood purity thing was forgotten because nearly all shifters were killed generations before and almost nothing was written down during that time, the only ones that kept some semblance of written history were the nobles. They started opening up to outside world and eventually became a part of the empire through trade, still keeping to themselves mostly and not integrating with regular outworld society as much as the other races.

Throughout all this, silent killings of shapeshifters was still going on, the nobility that had originally built their claim to power of off the death of them couldn’t let their new allies or their subjects know the bloody history of how they truly started their rule. Luckily for them, shapeshifters usually came from poor, lonely villages in the outskirts, and generally would be killed even before they sent someone to take care of them by the fearful townsfolk who thought the person was cursed or an abomination.

Syzoth was born in one of these villages, on the very farthest outskirts of Zikander, he first turned when he was 7, and was ran out at 15. The only reason he didn’t die was because the village was so isolated and his mother and father were important enough in the town that they could protect him until he reached adulthood for a saurian. Since he immediately left Zikander after his exile from the village he was never caught.

Khameleon was born to one of the wealthiest noble families in Zikander, and was promptly given off to the Umgadi a couple weeks after she was born. She grew up as a normal zatteran until at 3 she shifted for the first time. Due to the previously mentioned destruction of Saurian history, the Umgadi had no idea of her shifting being genetic and believed she was just a child born with strange arcana, an individual case. When word had reached the Zikander nobility they panicked until they realized the Umgadis belief. they decided to leave her alive as it would only draw attention if they murdered her. She was trained under the impression that she was wholely unique.

It's weird that Syzoth doesn't show more interest in Khameleon's existence. I mean, in his intro dialogues I think he only talks about her once and that's because he only found out about her. And like... I don't know if the intro dialogues are supposed to happen before or after the characters endings but he doesn't mention her there. Syzoth and Khameleon's relationship definitely should be acknowledged and worked upon in future games. Khameleon is the only zaterran we know beside Syzoth who lives outside of their underground city and most importantly Khameleon is also able to shapeshift into a human form (as weird as she looks compared to Syzoth) which means that she would also be a victim of the conspiracy leading to the genocide of shapeshifting zaterrans.

Does that mean Khameleon was also cast away from her own community? How did she even find herself among the Umgadi? Umgadi are supposed to be the first daughters of Outworld families so was Khameleon born in Outworld? How could her family be accepted when we know warmbloods chased the zaterrans to the underground? Tanya knows Khameleon is a zaterran so I'm guessing it's no secret among the Umgadi and the royal family. Is Khameleon some sort of exception? Did she flee and eventually found refuge among the Umgadi?

Man, she's not even Umgadi or anything in my AU, she's pretty different but I still have so many questions about canon lizard girl.

Idk why but dark urge Kitana feels right to me somehow?? Or maybe barbarian reiko. I’d do rain but I’m debating between mk11 and mk1 rain, bc mk11 rain would be def be a sorcerer since he was born with it, but mk1 confirmed in a dialogue with Ashrah that he had to learn hydromancy and it didn’t come naturally, so he’d be a wizard. Or I could play Syzoth as a dragonborn and have him keep using disguise as much as I could.

Would mk1 Shang Tsung be a warlock technically because he made a deal with ‘Damashi’? He aligns more with a wizard then anything the way he learned but I think if I chose anything other warlock it’d have to be sorcerer just because that’s what he’s called constantly, even if its not dnd accurate lol.
