tfog commentary #28
GOD I wish TĂșrin & Tuor could have met!!! Like I know that’s basic but!! If Tuor and VoronwĂ« had tried to talk to him, maybe the post-Nargothrond troubles could have been better resolved
even if Finduilas and Gwindor and Beleg and Andróg died maybe he and Niënor could have survived and avoided incest and
gahh!!
Also detour to Doriath?? Reunion with Morwen?? Mablung comforting TĂșrin?? Everyone in Doriath uh. ACTUALLY KNOWING WHAT HAPPENED TO BELEG?? And maybe TĂșrin AND Tuor going to Gondolin just like their fathers??

DAILY REMINDER: FALLEN BANNERS EDITION
Daily reminder Celebrimbor was paraded around as a banner and Maeglin was thrown thrown from the wall to fall to his death.
Daily reminder they died that way and we decided it was a wonderful idea to have their ship-name be called Fallen Banners. Like what...

Maeglin did nothing wrong ever in his entire too-short life, except for all things he did wrong. Hope this helps!

How I headcanon Maeglin:
Angry young adult that did not really know how to adult but was Masking so damned hard that somehow he passed as charming and nice
Power hungry because power was alluring and what else was better than power to fill in that empty mental illness hole of grief and guilt and depression and anxiety and fear and so much fear (Therapy was better but elves haven’t figured out therapies did they.
Walking disaster that should really ask for help but would not ask for help because PRIDE and he did not know how to word a cry for help anyway. Also everyone else around desperately needed help and would not ask for help and Gondolin was really filled by walking disasters.
Did not feel comfortable killing things himself but was happy making weapons that killed things thus in canon somehow caused thousands of deaths without actually staining his own hands. Weak in that specific way.
His sense of danger was OFF. And he made BAD decisions. Blame horrible genetics from his mother (saw a suspicious brooding stranger in dark forest and thought that was exotic and very fuckable) and his father (marched into enemy’s palace with a fucking poisoned javelin then chose death)
Attracted animals because of the did not like killing thing. Especially pigeons. They stole his food and tried to nest in his hair. He thought that’s undignified and he worried if he would get bird shit in his hair. It never happened to him but did happen to other people. The truth was Gondolin pigeons did not like shiny things and Noldor wore so many shiny things and the pigeons wanted revenge. He did not wear that many shiny things (distraction & safe hazard in the forge & unable to understand Noldor aesthetics due to the “black-heart of his father”) so the pigeons deemed him the worthy one.
Disliked feared children because they were pushy and knew no boundaries. They sniffed out all the weak spots and exploited them ruthlessly. HORRIBLE
Would stab and push a child down some cliff if he saw vision of them alone in darkness burning with weird light. Especially when enemy was close the city was losing and he was already crazy. BAD DECISION Tuor was fully justified

Daily reminder Fingolfin, in great wrath and despair over what had befallen the Noldor, resolved to go to Angband to challenge Morgoth himself, mounted his horse Rochallor and proceeded to ride for Angband with such wrath that all who saw him mistook him for the Vala Oromë the Great Hunter.
Daily reminder that all those who mistook Fingolfin for Oromë probably thought Morgoth and Oromë, two Valar, would duel.
Daily reminder Fingolfin, upon reaching his destination, smote upon the Gates of Angband and shouted his challenge for all to hear, mocking Morgoth and calling him craven and master of slaves.
Daily reminder Morgoth was said to be the mightiest of all things in the world, certainly the mightiest of the Valar, and he was reluctant to face Fingolfin, because he alone of the Valar knew fear.
Daily reminder Morgoth attempted to smite Fingolfin many times and Fingolfin always managed to dodge these blows.
Daily reminder Fingolfin wounded Morgoth seven times.
Daily reminder Morgoth probably personally tortured Maeglin because he knew whose grandson Maeglin was and Morgoth wanted to have his revenge on Fingolfin in some way.
Daily reminder Fingolfin was beaten to the ground three times by Morgoth's blows and he rose up and continued to fight each time.
Daily reminder Fingolfin stumbled backwards into one of the pits created by Morgoth's failed strikes, and Morgoth stepped on Fingolfin's neck and killed him.
Daily reminder Fingolfin's last desperate stroke managed to cut into Morgoth's heel.
Daily reminder Morgoth broke Fingolfin's body and was going to feed it to his wolves when Thorondor, King of the Eagles, swooped down and slashed at Morgoth's face with his talons, and then retrieved Fingolfin's body to take to Gondolin.
Daily reminder Maeglin never met his grandfather until the Eagles brought his body to Gondolin and Fingolfin didn't know about his daughter Aredhel's death either.
Daily reminder that, though Morgoth defeated Fingolfin in personal combat, the Orcs never boastfully sang of his defeat and neither did the Elves, for their sorrow was too great.
Daily reminder Morgoth walked with a limp after that duel and his wounds pained him forever.
Daily reminder Fingolfin did what FĂ«anor would have done.
Daily reminder Fingolfin followed FĂ«anor to his death.

One thing I always feel very important about the whole Maeglin selling out Gondolin for life & freedom matter is

Morgoth promised him lordship and Idril AFTER Maeglin already told him about Gondolin’s location and defense secrets.
Yeah obviously the promise of power and Idril might be what kept him in line and continue to cooperate with Morgoth after returning to Gondolin (can be interpreted in various ways from “the world is ending better take care of my own desire” to “the world is ending better preserve what I can still save”)
But the lordship and Idril were NOT what directly caused the initial betrayal.
Here comes my dumb headcanon:
Maeglin initially cracked not because of anything related to Idril and Tuor.
He cracked because of the torture & what Turgon did to Hurin.
When Hurin came to seek help nearly three decades after his imprisonment, Turgon assumed Hurin was released because he sold out the location of Gondolin for freedom. Turgon was overwhelmed by this assumption and let emotions run over his own judgement (again). He directly told the eagle “my heart is shut,” and refused to take Hurin in.
Of course Turgon changed his mind after calming down. But it took too long; the night fell and the eagles could not find Hurin again. From Hurin’s pov he was abandoned by his friend (or even a father figure), and thus was driven to complete despair, crying out in pain, accidentally letting Morgoth know the general location of Gondolin.
I think it is rather possible that Maeglin knew of this, at the moment or later.
Then when he got captured by Morgoth and put through tortures, he would realize he was essentially in the role of Hurin.
Turgon did love Maeglin. But Maeglin knew Turgon treasured Hurin too. The king treasured Hurin enough to make an exception and let the brothers leave the city to return home. Probably after Unnumbered Tears Turgon also built statues in Gondolin honoring Hurin. But when Hurin actually showed up at door and seeked help? Turgon immediately grew suspicious and assumed that Hurin betrayed the city.
And Morgoth could even tell Maeglin what really happened to Hurin. How Hurin endured torture for 28 years without betraying Gondolin, but was viewed as traitor and abandoned by the king of Gondolin anyway. How Turgon became the last straw that break Hurin into leaking the location. How ultimately it was thanks to Turgon’s closed heart that Maeglin got captured.
In a word, I think what caused Maeglin’s betrayal was him realizing that
Morgoth could torture him forever
No one from Gondolin would come to save him (And other realms had fallen so there was really no hope)
Even he suffered forever to keep the secrets, it was expected and not appreciated by Gondolin
Even if he found a way to escape back to Gondolin, he might still be rejected/executed by Turgon because no one was allowed to lead danger to Gondolin (according to “of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin”)
Morgoth already knew the general location, no matter he cope or not Gondolin would eventually be found. And then Turgon would believe it was him that betrayed Gondolin anyway.
So yeah.
——————–
I just think Turgon rejecting Hurin should has more long term damages than letting Morgoth knew the general location of Gondolin (which was already very bad).
It was something that could send out all the wrong messages and greatly damage the morale. I always imagine the event was kept as a secret, and even most of the lords did not know about the matter.
I think Tuor absolutely was kept out of it and he never knew he was so close to meeting his uncle until after the Fall.
Idril probably knew it, and helped to keep the secret from Tuor, and felt guilty. And that was one of the crucial moments that made she further distrust Turgon’s judgement. (I want all the “my father did an evil thing and I am helping him to keep it as a secret” angst)
Maeglin
Actually fought the losing war along with Hurin and Huor and was there when they sacrificed themselves to help troop of Gondolin escape. IDK I think that’s another “silently pondering in horror” moment for him. And he kept thinking about it, and kept trying to not thinking about it, until Morgoth forced him to think.

Lovers to enemies is such a fucking cool trope like a betrayal so bad that there is nothing coming back from it even though they been together for years know every little thing about each other, one of them did something so beyond forgiveness that they are now willing to end each other over it?? Yeah i could eat that shit up all day.
