MeeT on GasTown

Vegan doesn’t always mean bland and MeeT proves it. MeeT is a casual, vegan restaurant located in Downtown with two locations: MeeT on Main and MeeT on GasTown. Around a year ago, we were watching Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here” Vancouver edition and MeeT on Main was featured. It seemed pretty cool and tasty looking. So, we finally found the time to go to MeeT on GasTown this weekend.
Just a disclaimer, we aren’t vegans and this is actually our first time going to a vegan restaurant. So this was entirely an adventure for us. Keep in mind that our review is from a “meat eater’s” point of view.
Walking through GasTown, you won’t be able to physically see the restaurant because it’s hidden in some kind of indoor mall behind all the shops. But it’s still fairly close to the Stadium-Chinatown station. When we first entered the restaurant, there was a small waiting area which was a little cramped because of all the people waiting. We didn’t end up having to wait for too long, so it wasn’t really a problem for us. There’s also an outdoor seating area, but because it was raining, everybody chose to sit inside. Anyways, we were greeted almost immediately after arriving to the shop. The staff was very friendly and laid-back. We were seated in a table of 6, sharing with others. Though there were lots of people, we all had our own spaces and it felt quite comfortable.

When you look at the menu, one might forget that it’s a vegan restaurant. The menu is set up normally, but with little cute names that accompany each dish. We each decided to order one dish and split it among the two of us. I ordered The Double-Double aka The Double-Bacon Double Cheez Burger, which our server said was her favorite, while my sister ordered the Mac N’ Cheez.

We waited for a bit, but both of the meals came at the same time. Let’s talk about the Double-Double first. All burgers come with a side of a salad and some fries. When you look at the burger, it looks exactly like what a good burger should look like. It was enormous. Even when I cut the burger in half, it was still hard to eat. The coconut bacon was on point. You wouldn’t be able to taste the coconut flavor because it tastes just like real bacon. The burger patty had strong flavors and I could really taste the spices, but it lacked a bit of texture when biting into. You might be wondering how the dairy-free cheese tasted. Well, with so many flavors in the burger, I didn’t really notice the cheese. I tried the cheese on its own and at first, it tasted normal, but then there was this aftertaste that is not expected from non-vegan cheese. Overall, it was a good burger. As for the sides, the salad was really refreshing with a hint of mint leaves. The fries were fried to perfection and was paired with a nice sauce.
Overall: 4/5

My sister actually forgot that they did not use actual cheese because the restaurant is vegan, but oh well. This dish also looked like your regular Mac N’ Cheese. But once you eat it, it hits you that it’s not just some Mac N’ Cheese, but Mac N’ Cheez. This bacon in the Mac N’ Cheez tasted different than the ones in The Double Double. Though the color imitates bacon, it has a strong underlying taste of coconut. With the spices that were added, it kind of reminded me of curry, not that I’m complaining. The broccoli added a nice texture to the meal. The consistency of the sauce is a tad bit thicker than your average Mac N’ Cheese but it was still quite creamy. There was also an added nutty flavor, which was probably due to the fact that the cheese is made from cashews. The main problem I had with the Mac N’ Cheez, the sauce was thick which made me full really quick.
Overall: 3/5
MeeT is a great restaurant to get together for a chill lunch or dinner. I highly recommend MeeT to everyone; vegans and non-vegans. As a meat-eater, I have more choices of what to eat and I probably set my standards a little bit too high, but the food was really good nonetheless. As for the price, it’s leaning towards the higher price range, but that’s what would be expected from a vegan restaurant. Overall, it was a great restaurant and I would go again if I get the chance.
