            The PROMISE of next year meant something completely bewildering to her, even if she knows he was joking with her. another year of this, another year of watching their son GROW & somehow still being blind to the fact that they were GROWING too. he didn't leave her much time to ponder it, since suddenly his lips were on hers & quickly drove out any thought other than how much she wants him. " wait --- new year, new game. " she doesn't usually push him back, but this time she does, just enough to catch a breath. her hands lift to cup his jaw, finding her hazel eyes reflecting back from his blue ones. their games usually consist of TAKING whatever they want, whether they both win or lose in the process & their rules are a long list of 'DO NOT's --- it'd be nice to have a break from that. " NO rules this time, okay? " for once, giving herself permission to feel like a real girlfriend didn't feel so bad. if he could act like a real boyfriend. she leans back in, kissing him with the same INTENSITY he showed her. no invitation necessary, she’s already finding her way into his lap, guiding his arms to close around her. 

        He knows that he can stand teasing her for quite a WHILE longer – yet in a way he couldn’t see the point of that. Sometimes it was worth it to cut the corners. “ I’m not sure what I call it – but we can always figure that out NEXT year. ” Considering their year was almost over, it wasn’t exactly much of an exaggeration.  “ I’ll pass on needlepoint. I had a DIFFERENT game in mind. ” Kai may have dipped into the booze cabinet before she returned, so making the next daring move wasn’t all that hard for him to PROCEED with. He closes the gap between them, pressing his lips hard against hers.

      “ --- If that’s what you want to call it. “ Friends... it was a STRANGE label to put on their complicated relationship. It didn’t quite fit --- their ties to each other were much DEEPER, even if they wouldn’t admit it. When he edges closer to her, she shifts only to face him, the grin apparent on her face. “ No idea. Is it needlepoint? Monopoly? “ She’s teasing, & she knows it, even she couldn’t keep a game face on as her gaze instinctively flit towards his mouth & the thought of kissing him is hard to SHAKE.

           “ I’m better off without friends – but we’re friends, AREN’T we ? ” He teases the end of this question with a cheesy grin. He’s not exactly expecting an answer to it, but for lack of a better term she was TECHNICALLY his girlfriend. Neither of them ever spoke about that part of WHATEVER their relationship was, though. He curls up his legs when she nudges them & slides his way closer to her on the couch, face bracing dangerously CLOSE to hers. “ The type of things that parents do when KIDS aren’t around. ” Not that they didn’t come close to crossing lines when Bellamy was around.

          “ Says the guy with no friends. “ Alcohol eats through her filter like nothing else could. To SOFTEN the blow, she playfully nudges his legs. Although they rarely ever made plans to spend time together, under the guise that they were abhorrent to the idea entirely, they more often than not ended up just like this... together. “ I’ve already blown my whole night, so I’m OPEN to suggestion. What did you have in mind? “

         Sometimes he isn’t sure EXACTLY what always draws him back. At any point he could drop everything & run the other way as if it didn’t exist. But then he would remember. He COULDN’T be the father that his own was. This child deserved better than he got … & some part of him realized Octavia did too. That he was growing ATTACHED to her in ways he had no other person before. He has his feet kicked up on the couch when she joins him. “ Beats being a lot of other places. But we can always make it LESS lame. ”

        Heels already discarded at the door, she takes a seat next to Kai on the couch. Little Bellamy is with his aunts, allowing the pair of them some time to themselves. She had tried to spend the evening with some girlfriends -- ended up having a few drinks and then turned tail right back HOME. Snatching the open bottle off the coffee table, she sighed,  “ How lame is it that we get New Year’s Eve off and we’re still HERE? ”

hello friends!

it’s been a REALLY long time. too long. i want to come back. but to do that.... i need to remake some blogs and get back in the swing of things. which make take a while. sadface.

i really miss being here.

            “ i don’t know, you just have to figure it out! it’s not like i’ve done this before either. “

                      she’s huffing, not because she’s truly angry but FRUSTRATED. she’s had to                             endure plenty of bellamy’s wailing -- by injury or otherwise -- & she’s never been                         able to FIX IT like kai does. it makes it worse that he’s actually being logical                             about it. she chews her cheek for a second, surprised that he’s backed down.                             she’s not used to that.

           “ -------- between your family & mine, i think it’s safe to say bell is going to be OKAY. “

             “ well that’s why he has the TWO of us, isn’t it ? i was never entirely human & neither was any of my family. if i can teach him what is is to be a SIPHON, you’d be better to show him what it is like to NOT have magic at all. how would i begin to show him something that i don’t know ANYTHING about ? ”

                              but with her last sentence, he seems to CALM down from his defense.                                   could it be they ACTUALLY agreed about something ?

                “ good. because i WON’T let it happen either. ”

               “ no, obviously you don’t get my point. he’s never going to learn balance unless SOMEONE shows him. i’m not going to pretend that i get what being a siphon is like --- but i know it gives him a better chance than the rest of your family to BLEND in. magic already is a part of his life, it’s literally EVERYWHERE. ��

                                 the breath she takes doesn’t consume enough time for her to think about her                                                 next words & swallow them back down.

                 “ he will never feel like that. i would NEVER let that happen to him. “

             “ i’m not saying that i DON’T get your point, but he does still have gemini in his veins. magic is going to be a part of his life & i plan to teach him what being a SIPHON means. right now he’s four & has an imagination the size of texas. it’s hard to explain to a kid the balance of being both human & a witch. all i know is that i NEVER want him to feel the way my father made me feel. ”

                 they’re half-spiraling into an argument, but it’s a                            conversation they NEED to have, nonetheless.

                                               she takes a BEAT before saying anything more. she knew where this was going --- directly into the fight zone.

        “ look, i see where you’re coming from but bell has to learn to be NORMAL too. he can’t grow up thinking he can do anything because dad’ll just snap his fingers and everything’s FINE. we’re human with limits. “

              “ and if i HADN’T been there, it would have been worse. it would have taken hours to go through the emergency room. MONTHS to heal anything that might be broken. nothing about him trying to jump was my fault. the kid wanted to go down a slide. ”

                                something struck him as her telling him that he was UNFIT.

            “ it was two hours, kai. in just TWO hours, bell got hurt so bad you had to HEAL him instead of putting a band-aid on it. “

                                   it wasn’t that she didn’t TRUST him, she just couldn’t rely on his judgement.

           “ how exactly would he be BREAKING his neck ? – he jumped down some stairs, not a building. i WOULDN’T let that happen. “

                           perhaps kai was a bit more PROTECTIVE of the child than he even knew.

          “ and if he falls and breaks his neck NEXT time? what then? magic ONLY goes so far --- he’s not superman! “

       “ but he DIDN’T break it. if you haven’t noticed already magic is part of his life – so what about this part of the world isn’t REAL to you ? ”

             “ He could have BROKEN his arm! Doctors fix things like that in the real world, remember? “

               “ He didn’t NEED to go to the hospital. I healed him with magic. He’s FINE. ”

                “ ----- It’s a good thing you’re hot because that line was pretty bad. “

          “ I’m implyin’ that we should try our own CHEMISTRY experiment. “

         “ – So what should two teens with a house to themselves do ? ”

              “ I came over to study for this chem exam, I have no idea what you’re implying. “

He takes several steps back and gives her a LOOK while he tries to put this all together. While he was no stranger to the process that started a woman going into labor after his mother had so many children, it DIDN’T mean that Kai was aware at all of what to do when it started happening. While he could use his magic to help her calm down, somehow he decided that wasn’t the best of his options right then. 

                            “Sure – take as many minutes as you NEED so long as you don’t pass out,                                or have the BABY right here. I’ll go grab….things.”

            WHAT things, he had absolutely no idea.

Out of his sight, she was able to get cleaned up and it seemed like the pain was all but vanishing in any case. Certainly enough time to get some cold water on her face, take a couple of deep breaths and try to accept the fact that time had RUN out. This was happening no matter what now. As if to drive that point home, as soon as she’d stepped out of the bathroom, CRIPPLING white-hot pain seized her abdomen, leaving her gripping the wall in the hallway.

                             “ Kai? Did you call your sister already? I need to talk to Bellamy                                before we leave. “

         Another wave of her insides constricting warned her of the ticking time-bomb inside.

                “ I ---- I don’t know, Kai. “

When he approaches, she holds out her palm forward, gesturing for him to keep his distance. The pain is subsiding, but she’s well aware it’s not over yet. Not by a long shot. But she can almost smell the confusion coming off him in waves and it’s making her anxious. What if she’s not ready for this either? What if she’s DELUDED herself into thinking that all this was going to work out somehow?

                                   “ I just need you to give me a MINUTE. I’m soaking wet and                                       I need to get it together for a second. I’m fine. “

      “ Are you sure you want to WAIT for them to get closer together ? “ 

There’s a moment of realization for Kai in the fact that he TRULY is about to become a father. What exactly that entails is another story. One that he has no intention of finding out there and now. He SIGHS out a short breath and moves over to the girl. Does he help her stand up ? This shouldn’t be a responsibility that belongs to someone that had murdered children on PURPOSE once upon a time.

                            “ Let’s just go to the car – I have no IDEA what you need. “

                “ I think I’m having a contraction. “

It’s about as blunt and honest as she could get, in spite of sounding almost completely clueless. in most ways she was --- she had never had a contraction before. it certainly HURT a hell of a lot more than she expected. she catches the towel but almost immediately lets it drop as the pain spikes in her midsection, making her brace against the wall.

            “ Didn’t the doctor say we had to wait until they’re close together? “

          If he had enough shame in him to be embarrassed, he might have turned red. Instead he reaches for the closest towel and tosses it to her. He’s not even sure WHAT they should be doing as far as calling the police or rushing to get her in the car. 

                         “What’s ow – what’s happening ? Should we get to the hospital ?”

                  He should remember more about this considering how many siblings he had.
