Game Mechanics Comprehension Post
This post is a comprehension guide for the fic We’re Not the Monsters of Your Dreams's game mechanics posts. Each chapter (actually just chapter 7 - 60ish) of the fic is one turn in The Deep Forest game. You do not need to understand what is going on the game to understand the fic and the game won’t be referenced much on Ao3, only here on Tumblr if you are curious. Some modifications will be made so the story is comprehensible.
Each turn of The Deep Forest is one week of story. During a turn, three things happen:
A card is drawn. Which card is drawn is determined by what season it is (spring, summer, autumn, winter) and a random number generator. A prompt is given and responded to.
Project counters are moved forward and any projects that are ready finish.
One of three actions are taken: uncover something old/discover something new, start a project, or hold a discussion/come to an agreement.
The results of these things will determine what happens in the chapter.
There is a list of monsters and characters. Any new monsters or characters will be noted in the chapter’s game mechanics post.
Additionally, there is a list of adoptions and taboos. When the Galaxy Team was driven off, they left behind many objects and practices that the Hisuian people will either adopt as their own or label as taboo. Changes to this list will be noted on the game mechanics post.
Things that happen in the game will be visually represented on a crude map. This map will be included in the mechanics posts.
Again, there will be posts made on this account explaining the game mechanics for each chapter so if you don’t want to see that, block the tag #dh game mechanics. If you do want to read them, there will be hyperlinks on the pinned post to make navigating them easier.

Arc Summary Master Post
Below are links to posts summarizing each arc of my fic We're Not the Monsters of Your Dreams. If there is a text without a link, that just means it hasn't been posted yet and will be added once that portion of the story is posted on ao3.
Arc 1: Introduction
Arc 2: Deep Hisui Spring
Arc 3: Deep Hisui Summer
Arc 4: Deep Hisui Autumn
Arc 5: Deep Hisui Winter
Arc 6: City of Light*
Arc 7: Quiet Kalos Spring
Arc 8: Quiet Kalos Summer
Arc 9: Quiet Kalos Autumn
Arc 10: Quiet Kalos Winter
Arc 11: Epilogue
*The Emmet in Legends ZA arc is planned but I have accounted for changes in the story based on the release of the game and for the event I get unmotivated to keep writing due to the length of the story. If I do not get through all the planned arcs, there is a plan so the story will still feel finished/have an ending.

Part 1: Introduction Summary
This is a supplementary post to We’re Not the Monsters of Your Dreams, a monster AU fanfic of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
The fic is split into arcs because it’s so long. I’m the kind of guy who sometimes has a hard time following long fics where a lot of stuff is happening so I’m going to be posting summaries at the end of each arc so you can look back and get caught up if you forget anything.
Chapter 1
The story begins one month after Rei and Akari, a pair of twins, arrive in Hisui
The twins meet Volo at the Jubilife gate and have permission to explore the Fieldlands with him.
They battle an Alpha Bibarel. Rei and Akari have an aversion to alphas
They battle Lord Kleavor. Lian is hurt
They seek help from a Galaxy camp but they reject Volo and Lian. Akari and Rei lend Volo Starly and Rowlett to try to contact the clans for help. Volo and Lian leave.
Chapter 2
Galaxy members, Ginter, and Ingo have a meeting. The other clansmen are excluded
Some of Hisui’s history is revealed and Ginter claims Akari and Rei are chosen to help save Hisui like the legends of the hero of Hisui
Rei and Akari are given permission to fight the nobels
Rei and Akari leave with Ingo immediately
They spend the night at the Grandtree. Kleavor gives them the insect plate
Chapter 3
Melli joins Ingo, Rei, and Akari by the fire and Ingo explains fur, fangs, and fae as well as the differeny interpretations of Almighty Sinnoh’s nature. The Pearl Clan believes its space, the Diamond Clan believes its time, and the Ginkgo Guild believes its something to do with other dimensions.
Ingo brings Rei and Akari to the full moon gathering. They watch fur/fangs pair up
Melli feeds on Ingo despite Ingo being a human. It is not enough to sustain Melli but he pretends it does.
Lilligant is frenzied
Chapter 4
The twins return to the village. Kamado is angry at them for going out at night and fighting the nobel without permission
There is a summary of canon events. The sky turns red and the twins stay with Cogita. Rei catches Dialga and Akari catches Palkia
Volo suggests looking for legendary Pokémon to complete the Pokédex. There is more summary of canon events
Rei and Akari fight Volo. Akari dies.
Chapter 5
Ingo joins to help finish the battle. Giritina uses Phatom Force to take Volo away
Ingo inflicts a fur transformation upon himself and takes Akari to Melli
Chapter 6
Akari awakens after Melli performs a ritual to revive her and transform her into a fang
Akari, Rei, Ingo, and Melli seek Arceus, hoping to go home. Melli hesitantly goes with them, implying a decision to go with Ingo back to the future
Arceus tells them Hisui will go to war and they must stay

This is a supplementary post to my submas/PLA monster AU.
This is a longfic (expected 120 chapters but we’ll see, at least 60) but it was originally supposed to be 10 chapters. I decided to go a different direction at chapter 6 so I wanted to make a post explaining the original ending in case anyone was curious.
Quick context first.
First, an overview of the world. Hisui is mostly inhabited by “monsters,” which are Pokémon versions of classic creatures. There are four main groups in Hisui: Team Galaxy (the humans, aka the colonizers), the Pearl Clan (the furs, aka werewolves), the Diamond Clan (the fangs, aka vampires), and the Ginkgo Guild (the fae, aka witches but it varies).
Ingo is the only human living outside of the Galaxy Team. The Galaxy Team wants to take in Ingo and believes they can turn the Gingko Guild into regular humans like them. They are not on good terms with the clans. Akari and Rei are twins and arrived at Jubilife at the same time.
Second, relevant plot points. The canon events of PLA happen but Ingo and Volo are a little more involved, and the Galaxy is more hostile to the clans in the background. The first main change is during the battle with Volo, specifically where Akari was killed. Ingo underwent the fur/werewolf transformation process to have the strength to get Akari to Melli, who is a fang/vampire and would be able to put Akari through the transformation process.
As a result, Ingo becomes an amalgam of all his Pokémon on the full moon (and a partial version at night depending on the time in the moon cycle) and Akari’s fang/vampire traits come from a Gligar. Also, Volo is dragged off to the Distortion World by Giratina.
After they are transformed, they go to talk to Arceus in hope that this means they finished the Pokédex and can go home. Melli, Lady Sneasler, and Lord Electrode go with them. This is where the story diverges. In the version that is posted, Arceus tells the group that Hisui is about go go to war with Galaxy and they are needed. In the version that was not posted/written, Arceus allowed them to go home.
Here is what I had written on my outline for the original ending:
Ingo, Melli, Akari, and Rei just kind of set up a camp in the subway tunnels and take turns going to the surface to get food and supplies. They are just kind of homeless/surviving for a bit and regret their decision coming here (because they don’t know where they are).
On the full moon, Ingo undergoes his first true transformation and Melli tries to help him through it like furs and fangs typically do on the full moon. However, Volo interrupts it. Volo’s time in the Distortion World mutated him into a wraith-like being. He has the power to project into the surface world.
Real quote from my outline: “general horror ensues.”
Somehow everyone ends up on the surface. The police/interpol are called, and Emmet and Elesa are called in to assist.
Akari is also a bit out of control since this is her first full moon. Lady Sneasler and Ingo try to distract interpol/Elesa/Emmet so Melli and Rei can get Akari to safety.
Ingo detransformed at sunrise and is recognized by Elesa/Emmet. He is brought into custody, and he is distressed because he doesn’t know what happened to Akari.
Emmet catches Lady Sneasler in a Pokéball during this whole thing.
Elesa and Emmet take a walk to process what they just saw. Rei approaches them on the street thinking Emmet is Ingo. Good communication happens and somehow they all get reunited.
Work together to save Volo. Emmet takes Volo in, recognizing that Ingo has his own family now and being ready to adopt that change.
If it went on, Volo would teach Rei how to be a witch/Ginkgo Guild magic
But that is not the version you get. I’m further traumatizing the characters instead >:)

Dustox Melli from the fanfic We're Not the Monsters of Your Dreams, a monster AU of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
This is a colored version of this post. Read that post for context.
Melli is the only Dustox in the Diamond Clan. Melli is around the same age as Adaman and Mai so they all went out to choose what Pokémon their transformation would take after around the same time. Adaman and Mai, knowing they wanted to grow up to serve the clan. both chose Zubat, the traditional Pokémon of the Diamond Clan.
Melli knew he wanted to serve his clan too but he didn't wear that knowledge as patriotically as Adaman or Mai. He wanted to serve his clan, yes, but he didn't want to be just another Zubat in the flock. So, he sought a unique Pokémon to inflict his transformation. Because of his love of Poison-types, he was drawn to Dustox and fell in love with its beautiful green wings.

Masterpost For Art On This Blog
I am not an artist but I've drawn/decided to draw some of the characters in the fanfic because it makes the transformations a little easier to visualize.
The posts with drawings will often contain supplementary information about the characters that isn't told in the original fic.
Posts will be hyperlinked below with brief descriptions so they can be found easily. If there is text without a link, that means it has been drawn but not posted yet.

Amalgamized Ingo from chapter 5 of We're Not the Monsters of Your Dreams, a monster AU fanfic of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
I don't really remember making this but I have a vague memory of sitting in my cubicle at my temp job two years ago, drawing this with my finger on my iPhone 8 using the default drawing app. I found the original file and it got kind of fucked up but it lives on in this screenshot I found sitting in my Tumblr drafts.
In this AU, Pearl clansmen have werewolf-like transformations into Pokémon at night. Typically, the clansmen only has traits from one Pokémon but Ingo stapled his hand in all of his Pokémon's mouths and this was the result. It's a lot but he doesn't mind it. Ingo loves feeling like all of his Pokémon are a part of him.
The parts that make him up:
The face is Ingo's face. In the fic, I imagine it is more Pokémon-like but still strongly resembles Ingo
The helmet atop Ingo's head comes from his Alpha Kleavor
The antlers come from Ingo's Alpha Wyrdeer
The little ornaments in the crook of the antler come from the magnets on Ingo's Probopass
Ingo's chest is covered with a mass of vines from his Tangrowth
The bolts on Ingo's arms are from his Magnezone
The clawed hands come from Lady Sneasler
There is a secondary set of Sneasel hands in this picture because of Machamp but I kind of forgot they were there, so I don't really imagine them in the fic/written version of the transformation
The middle part/hips comes from Ingo's Gliscor
The legs come from Ingo's Alakazam
The tail comes from Ingo's Alpha Basculegion. Ingo has a female Basculegion but he has the pink tail of a male Basculegion
This is Ingo's "full" transformation so he becomes this version of himself on the night of the full moon. On the night of the half moon, he won't transform much, if at all. On the other nights, he transforms something between his human form and his "full" transformation so he might just gain one or two Pokémon traits depending on the stage of the moon.
With time, perhaps Ingo will learn to have some control over these transformations...

Dustox Melli from chapter 3 of We're Not the Monsters of Your Dream, a monster AU fic of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
I personally find it difficult to visualize things when I'm reading fics so here's a quick sketch of how I imagine Melli's wings look like in the fic in case any of you readers are like me. Check out a colored version here.
Melli's wings are folded up in the drawing on the left side, and they're split into two individual wings. Dustox, however, just sort of has one big crescent moon on its back, not individual wings, so I imagine Melli has some kind of ridges or hooks on his wings to link them together when he wants to spread his wings, like in the drawing on the right.
In the fic, Diamond clansmen are vampire-like beings with wings and other characteristics from Pokémon known for using draining moves. Typically, Diamond clansmen choose Zubat but the great Melli wouldn't settle for such a common Pokémon!
Excerpt from the fic:
“Melli, this is Rei and Akari. They’re the surveyors who helped Lian and Lord Kleavor. Rei, Akari, this is Warden Melli.” Ingo expected them to be excited to meet someone new. Just about anything was met with excitement with those two. At the very least, Ingo expected them to be polite. Screaming was just about the last reaction he considered. “What is that?” “Hmm?” Melli raised an eyebrow and looked down at himself. Ingo didn’t think there was anything out of the ordinary about his appearance. His hair and hat were put together despite the flight over. His Diamond Clan clothes were unstained and generally up to Melli’s standards. His green and red wings were a little powdery but they always were and Melli always had the decency not to wave them around people. Ingo really didn’t see what the problem was. “Was that directed at me?” “He- I- Wings!” Rei spluttered, pointing a finger right at Melli, and Ingo realized what the problem was. “Yes?” Melli spun around, looking over his shoulder to glance over his wings, but that seemed to freak Akari and Rei out even more. “I know Dustox is a bit unusual for a fang but I wanted to stand out from Adaman. Crobat are wonderful but I am the great Melli. Only a Dustox’s wings have beauty worthy of being mine.”

Groups in Hisui
Since the fic We’re Not the Monsters of Your Dreams introduces some pretty drastic changes to Hisui, some parts of the fic may be a little confusing as you’re figuring things out. If you are the kind of person who needs it all written out plainly, here is a breakdown of the changes to the groups and what the mechanics of all that are.
Context if you have not read the fic: This is a monster AU so there are different groups of nonhumans around Hisui. This post contains some spoilers but nothing significant.
Galaxy Team
The Galaxy Team is a group of human colonizers primarily from Galar. There are groups from Galar in other regions as well, similarly trying to claim land. Galar has legends about various creatures/human variants found in other regions, such as vampires and werewolves, but they are not on friendly terms with them. They understand that Alpha Pokémon play a role in converting clansmen from “normal” humans into “werewolves” and “vampires.” They are aware that the Ginkgo Guildsmen are inhuman and wish to convert them back to being human.
Pearl Clan
The Pearl Clan is made up of furs, the Hisuian word for a Pokémon version of werewolves. Mammalian Alpha Pokémon can convert humans into furs via a bite, which Pearl Clansmen do willingly when they come of age. Most Pearl Clansmen are common Pokémon like Eevee or Bidoof because they are most accessible but many clansmen choose other Pokémon. Pearl Clansmen have a human form during the day but transform at night. They fully transform on the full moon and have weaker/stronger stages depending on how close to the full moon they are.
Diamond Clan
The Diamond Clan is made up of fangs, the Hisuian word for a Pokémon version of vampires. They take after Pokémon with draining moves, typically Leech Life. Fangs can be converted one of two ways. They can go through a process like furs and be bitten by an Alpha Pokémon or they can be converted into a fang by other fangs after death. Fangs burn in the sunlight, though it does not kill them, and most of them can fly.
Similarities between the clans
If a clansman takes after an unevolved Pokémon, they can evolve. They can use moves of the Pokémon they take after but it is difficult and many of them cannot. For example, a Zubat fang may be able to use a move Zubmat learns easily like Supersonic but would have to work hard to be able to use a move like Venoshock.
On the full moon, furs become agitated and have difficulty controlling themselves. Fangs drain them, drawing blood and/or life energy from them so they are too tired to move. Fangs can eat regular food but don’t necessarily need to. They need to drain energy to remain stable and in control of themselves. They typically do so once a month, the full moon magnifying their need to feed, but they can go longer if needed. Therefore, the Diamond and Pearl Clans have a symbiotic relationship and meet every full moon to balance each other out.
Who a fur or fang decides to spend the full moon with can be a big deal but it doesn’t have to be. These relationships are important but typically not romantic. Asking someone to be a regular feeding partner is a sign of commitment to the relationship but it is not frowned upon to feed with someone else.
Ginkgo Guild
The Ginkgo Guild are called the fae but their powers/nonhumanness are less strictly defined. The Ginkgo Guild originated in Hisui but have traveled to many other regions, and their abilities manifest in different ways more often in other areas. Broadly, the word fae just means someone who has a connection to the energy of a specific type and has similar powers/abilities as a result.
The majority of the Ginkgo Guild are witches, people with a strong connection to Fairy-type Pokémon. They are very attuned to natural energy and can manipulate this energy, alongside ritual items, to perform spells and magic. However, this is difficult to do, requires a lot of study and training, and there are significant limits to what they are able to do. These limitations serve more as rules than true limitations and they are capable of many great things, they just typically do not do them.
The Fairy Tale Girl trainer class from Generation 6 is a modern variation of the fae.
The Channeler trainer class from Generation 1 is also a variation of the fae, the trainers taking after Ghost-type Pokémon rather than Fairy-types. They have similar abilities but they have different rules and limitations because they are connected with a different type of energy.
The Ginkgo Guild is somewhat descended from the Celestica. The Celestica were “true” fae, the connections with Fairy-types transforming and mutating them in a way more akin to the clansmens’ transformations. These fae are more inhuman and have greater powers but there are not many of them and are not typically found among the guild.
The Ginkgo Guild often adopt human children into the guild and growing up in the guild causes the children to become more like the fae.
Other
There are other nonhuman groups around the Pokémon world and we will see some of them later in the story but these are the four main groups in Hisui at the start of the story.
If you’re still confused, these groups are fleshed out more in future chapters of the story but you’re always welcome to leave a comment on the fic or send an ask if you want to know more.

I am very excited to announce I’ve started posting a new longfic!
It’s titled We’re Not the Monsters of Your Dreams. It’s a monster AU of Pokemon Legends Arceus where I use The Deep Forest (a worldbuilding ttrpg about a group of monsters decolonizing their home) to show Rei and Akari exploring a very different Hisui, questioning and redefining what it means to be human, and fighting to protect the region from the Galaxy Team.
This is also a submas fic so the hope is to eventually have the story about Emmet in Legends ZA.
I started writing this in 2023 immediately after finishing Masking (my Hisuian Zoroark Ingo fic) and I have a lot of it prewritten so updates will be regular at least for now.
Also, because it is so long, I made a sideblog @deep-hisui so I have somewhere to put posts about that specifically. Go check out that blog and/or the fic if any of that sounds interesting to you!

Use of the Monster Trope in the Fic
This is a supplementary post to We’re Not the Monsters of Your Dreams addressing the use of the monster trope in a fic about a fictional indigenous group.
I started writing this fic in 2023. The original idea for the fic was just sort of what if there were vampires which led to what if the Galaxy team was struggling to survive in a region of monsters then I almost immediately realized that is literally just colonial racism and did not write that.
But, the idea stuck around in my head and I decided to just give it a shot. I didn’t have to post it if I didn’t like it. Right after I finished writing Masking (my Hisuian Zoroark Ingo fic), I wanted to write a short fic with similar fics to keep my reader base while I took a break before writing Destructive Interference (spin-off to Masking). So, I wrote the outline for a 10 chapter fic based on this idea but only got to chapter 6 before abandoning it and writing Immortality Is Hard on the Mind (immortal Volo fic) instead.
I didn’t like the ending I originally had planned. In the first draft, Ingo, Melli, Akari, and Rei returned to Nimbasa City and just sort of ran loose around the city until the police captured some of them and Emmet found out what happened to his brother. But there wasn’t really a good conclusion there and I still felt kind of icky about the monster themes.
There were two main things that gave me the breakthrough to keep writing. The first was just a fuckton of research. I picked the fic back up in 2024, which was the same year I really committed to a nonfiction book project that I was working on (which is published under my real name so I am not name dropping it). Parts of what I wrote for that book were focused on colonial racism’s impact on relationships today and queer reclamation of dehumanization. I did a lot of reading and interviews about the topic which made me feel a little better about this fic but that still didn’t excuse the main problem.
The solution came in The Deep Forest, a post-colonial weird fantasy. Using the game to write the fic just sort of clicked in my head one day. The Deep Forest is a worldbuilding game about a group of different species of monsters rebuilding their home after driving off a group of human colonizers. It’s not a perfect solution but I felt inspired by the notes Avery Alder Mcdaldno and Mark Diaz Truman, the creators of The Deep Forest, put at the end of The Deep Forest about their own experiences and reasons for creating the game.
Again, it’s not a perfect solution. There are definitely problems with writing a story about a group of indigenous people being portrayed as monsters. But, it’s a story I wanted to write so I did. I tried to center it around reclaiming dehumanization, understanding how we define humanity, and reflect what I learned about real-world people realizing they’re not really about the whole being human thing.
Anyway, if you don’t like, don’t read. If you like but don’t vibe with it, totally okay too. I am definitely open to hearing there is a problem with something in my stories as long as you’re not a dickhead about it.

What is this blog? (Pinned Post)
This is a blog for the fanfiction We’re Not the Monsters of Your Dreams by entity9silvergen on ao3. The fic is very long so I wanted a place to put any supplementary posts. It is a monster AU of Pokémon: Legends Arceus focused on Ingo, Rei, Akari, Melli, Volo, Ginter, Irida, and Rye (and others).
The first six chapters of the fic are introductory and following that, I write the fic using the The Deep Forest ttrpg, a worldbuilding game about monsters decolonizing their home after driving humans off. Long-term, I hope to use the Quiet Year ttrpg to write a Legends ZA Emmet in Kalos extension but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
You do not need to know anything about the Deep Forest or the Quiet Year to read the fic. It will read like a normal fic. But, I will be posting the game mechanics on this blog, plus some other stuff. This pinned post will have hyperlinks to important posts.
