He didn’t chase the mermaid away and he didn’t attack her. Carrack’s cold eyes merely stared at her for a while, giving away curiosity and perhaps slight mockery. He could have been taken aback or simply not interested in replying to her, because all he did was scoff. But then a smile pulled at his lips, revealing his fangs and he glided away from the cave to move closer to her, draw a circle around her and study her.
He was not surprised that someone of his kind might have found out what he had been up to, his hunts tended to be rather messy and that mermaid might have spotted him hiding what was left of his victim. What surprised Carrack was her decision to bother him, a naive decision.
“What makes you think I owe you an explanation? You have been following me and you have interrupted my sleep... If I were you, I’d ask less questions.” That was the closest thing to an answer she got. Carrack didn’t bother replying to her question and instead he decided to ask his own questions, all while slowly swimming around her, ready to catch her if she’d try to swim away.
“Look at you, you are a fancy one, no scars on you for now. Who are you and where do you live?”.

Down in the dark, this mermaid has to rely on her rhinophores to lead the way.

Carrack was not a heavy sleeper, it was simply not convenient when growing up in a place where even his own relatives might have attacked him. He had once lived with his mother and his siblings and the vicious female had given him some of his worst scars. When he left his home, Carrack found himself a new family, made of other merfolk like him, but even there, rules were established through constant fights and lowering one's guard could have been a lethal mistake. So he was not a heavy sleeper.
His eyes fluttered open when he felt water move inside the cave. He was still alone inside there, but there was someone else, somewhere near. Rather annoyed to be awoken, the merman stretched out and he lazily slid towards the entrance of the cave. There she was, an intruder and also the first mermaid he had come across in those waters.
Carrack's eyebrows curved up and he leaned against a rock, letting his chin rest against his crossed arms while he studied her. He was silent, feeling no need for immediate interaction. The mermaid clearly was no danger for him, if anything, she had come to the wrong cave, unaware of who was napping in there.
He was not going to spend the rest of the day watching her braid her hair though. It was very long, it might have taken forever and his patience was soon worn out. The male clicked his tongue and a mischievous smile revealed his fangs, "Say... was this your cave? That's too bad, it's mine now and I'm trying to get some sleep so keep doing whatever you are doing somewhere else".

Shortage of Fish
[ 1x1 RP idea ]
Muse a works in a fish market and, as if the tough work and early morning shifts were not exhausting enough, a thief - muse b - has been stealing their fish lately. Intending to make them regret their crimes, one day muse a runs after the fish thief. The chase that ensues comes to an end in the nearby port. The merchant manages to catch up with the thief, they tackle them to take their fish back, but they are too close to the edge of the dock and they both fall into water.
While underwater, muse a gets the feeling there is a large creature next to them, definitely not human. They panic and they swim back to the dock as fast as they can, some bystanders help them up. When they turn around, that mysterious creature has disappeared and muse b is nowhere to be seen.
Shaken by the event, muse a calls it a day and they head back home to take a hot shower and get into dry clothes. But their thoughts keep going back to those instants they spent underwater. They can’t stop thinking of what they saw and they know they did not imagine it. On that night, muse a returns to the dock where they lost sight of muse b and they leave there a whole crate of fish, they then hide inside of one of the boats.
They don’t really know what to expect, but they won’t be disappointed. A mysterious figure emerges from water to slowly approach the dock, it’s the thief. Muse a watches in sheer disbelief as they climb onto the dock to reach for the crate. Muse b is only half human, the rest of their body is that of a large fish.

[  Carrack is a shark merman, this would be very interesting. ]
Send me “Low Tide” for a starter in which one of  our muses is a creature washed up from the sea, and the other is finding them while walking along the beach.

He loved it there, Carrack had only just begun to explore those waters, but he could already tell he would be enjoying his stay. It would not be a long one though. He never remained in one place for too long, his heart was that of a nomad and his way of life required constant change. He stole from the humans and he’d kill them, eventually they would notice. So he always left before they’d come for him. Sooner or later, he would leave the coasts of that island too.
That night, he devoured his victim in no time and he knew better to drag its remains towards deeper waters and hide them under the rocks. No one would ever know where that man had gone, the sea always kept its secrets.
Thanks to that meal, Carrack would be sated for quite a while, so his attention drifted away from the island and its inhabitants. He left the bay and he began to wander, aimlessly, swaying his tail slowly. He knew he was not alone, there were other merfolk in that area, he had smelled them, but he had not come across any. He also knew for sure that there were none of his kind, had there been other sharks, he would have already been attacked and chased away. His kind did not like to share.
Letting curiosity guide him, the merman swam towards the reef, his proximity making fish flee and hide, he was not interested in them though, he was not hungry. Carrack was merely looking for a place where he could rest. He had no home and he needed none, which meant he felt at home wherever he went. Eventually he found a cave large enough to host him, the fish that had been hiding in it dashed out and he settled in there. He would not sleep for long, he never did, but that would be a good place for a nap while he digested his hefty meal. His eyes shut and his body went still, sinking slowly, until it touched the bottom of the cave.

[ Starter for @ocean-runes  ]
Night had fallen over the silent sea, but beyond the shore a city had just come to life. There were lights, music and the sound of voices, the laughter of humans and noises that would have been foreign to any creature of the sea.
The port was silent and quiet though, the only noises coming from the gentle lapping of little waves against the boats. A large shadow lurked between those boats, it slowly glided through water, until it came to a stop under a wooden jetty.
Carrack had only arrived to that sea a few moons before and he had already learnt how to get himself an easy meal. He was not some pretty mermaid who could flicker her eyes at men and make them follow her into water. No, usually he would have to pretend he was drowning. But things got easier thanks to that city, humans went out to have fun at night and what little intelligence they had would be drowned into alcohol. That was the case of the drunkard who swayed towards the port on that night, the man was talking, rambling and humming. But he was alone. Or at least he thought he was.
Under the jetty, that shadow began to follow him. The man kept walking, tripping over his own feet occasionally, he was making his way towards the opposite end of the jetty, but he never made it there. That large shadow leaped out of water and when it dove again the drunken man disappeared with it. The port was once again a silent place.

Mermaid/Siren Prompts
Anonymous said:some more fantasy prompts?? maybe with mermaids and sirens talking to like humans + other creatures :0 Anonymous said:Can I please have some mermaid/siren prompts? Maybe like the siren is in love with a human, or being tracked down???
1) A leader’s song could whip the rest of them into a frenzy or soothe them at will. The mer did their best to cover their ears as the voice swept over the water towards them, commanding and impossible to disobey.  Time to hunt. But they didn’t want to devour this time, not this one, not her…
2) The Carribean mermaid eyed its Atlantic counterpart with wariness, not used to these waters. Churning, black, bitterly cold compared to the clear and astonishing turquoise of their home. Gentle, playful ocean compared to this hostile thing that sang on different frequencies. “You are a long way from your waters.” “I’ve been chasing a merchant ship these last weeks,” the Carribean mermaid said. “The Deliverance.” “We sunk a merchant ship that passed by just yesterday.” “Was there a siren aboard the ship?” their voice quivered.  The Atlantic mermaid startled at the question. “I - we left no survivors. I am sorry.”
3) Merfolk were valuable creatures. Beautiful and powerful alive, with scales that made the most stunning high end jewelry. They were hunted like nothing else these days - voices no match for modern sound cancelling technology.  The human stared down, wide-eyed, at the mer tangled up by accident and last night’s storm in their fishing net. One creature that could change their fortune forever if they sold it. Fix everything. The mer stared back, wide-eyed. Terrified. Thrashing exhausted as the lines cut against their skin and seemed to only tighten with their struggles. God, it looked so very scared. The human swallowed. They hauled it in and tried to ignore the guilt gnawing at their belly. It wasn’t like they could just let it go, could they?
