I’ve been in treatment for general anxiety for 12 years. Mental illness is not something you can cure. It’s something you learn to live with. Therapy, medication, and coping mechanisms are how I survive, and while looking into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I’ve adapted this one tip which has saved me a lot of grief. I hope it can help you, too.
So, what’s this hot tip?
The tip is very simple: make an “action card” out of a simple index card. On it you’ll write immediate actions you can do that you know will calm you down. You keep it with you at all times, especially when your anxiety is bad. Perhaps keep a duplicate in your bag so you always have it on the go.
What actions should I put on my card?
That is up to you. Everyone is calmed by different things. Quiet activities like meditation and coloring tend to amplify my anxiety by giving my mind the freedom to wander. I find that watching shows or movies that I know are very engaging to me to be helpful. Also, cleaning or other hobbies that require concentration are useful.
It’s possible that fixing yourself a cup of chamomile tea right away helps you. Or taking a bubble bath. Put those on your list. Calling a friend or relative may help, too. The point is that you have a reminder in place of things you can do immediately to help soothe you.
You may also want to include some things to do if you are really panicking. Counting all the letter E’s in a paragraph, for example, is a good distraction from acute anxiety. Just remember to stick with your activity until the bad anxiety passes. You won’t be much use to yourself until you’ve recovered a bit.
If you don’t know what kinds of things calm you yet, i suggest trial and error. And ask friends for their input. You may find the oddest things to be calming. For example, I love looking at pictures of cute corgis on Instagram, haha. Whatever works for you–put it on that action card!
I hope this helps. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

My mattress is strapped to eight roombas and I leave all my doors open at night so the roombas can go where they want to. I wake up where they want me to be. I trust their decisions.

03/07/18 2:22pm | Today has been so slow. I went to work and the gym, then hung out with my sister for a bit. I’ve done a bunch of odd jobs and my tax return, can’t believe it’s not even 2:30 yet! Also guess how much tax I’ll receive? An entire $18 lol 🙃 I planned to do a bit of shopping with it, but think I’ll just buy lunch instead hahahha fml

It’s okay to romanticise the small things about your day-to-day life. It’s okay to romanticise sleeping in, waking up to the sun tickling your skin. It’s okay to romanticise the texture of fingers against a page. Sometimes to save your day you need to romanticise sitting at a desk and working, or romanticise studying hyped up on coffee. It’s okay to picture yourself as if you were the mc in a movie. Watch yourself go through shit and know that it’s just the climax of your own story, and that while you sit in your room sobbing to sad songs, good things are just around the corner.
Sometimes to be okay or get through the day you need to romanticise the simple things.

Spring Semester - April 6th
Such a productive day! Okay, recap: finished typing a paper, formatted it, proof-read it; proof-read another paper; fully cleaned my bathroom; read an entire comic; cleaned my flat; had lunch and coffee with a friend; went shopping; study session at the library; folded the laundry; tidied my flat… Dang! And the day is not over yet! I kind of want to reorganise my books (again) in order to have some more surface to work (instead of doing it on my table).
