Back in Action.
Define nothing? Seems as if I haven't updated this page in months! Oh, that is because I haven't. I was in the process of making a few huge life changes (moving, losing a job, starting a new job, etc..) and had to put what I love most on the back burner. I am making up for my lack of updates - starting now. I am eager to get this site up to date and get back on track with the music I have missed so much. Although the summer didn't really measure up to the previous summers (music wise), my next post will recap live shows with pictures and videos, along with new artists and songs worth checking out.
A few highlights from live shows include: Rise Against, Explosions in the Sky, James Blake, Deftones, Junius,The Alaya Conscious and a new found Chicago local treasure "The Embracables".

I am a firm believer in helping what helps you. If music is something that defines you, isn't it worth supporting? Without music, my life would be very quiet and empty. It's funny how one can buy a fancy device to play music on and spend $200-$500 on it, but then bitch and complain about a CD being $5.99 on the band's website. There is a reason why my t-shirt collection is about 30 black, 1 red (shout out to BOS) 2 or 3 white, a few gray or green...etc...etc.
Even if you can't afford to buy an album or t-shirt, there are other ways to support a touring band. Offer them your couch/floor if they don't have a place to crash that night. Even bringing them a case of water or snacks for the road helps. Just don't steal their music and do nothing about it in return. Think about it like this; if you like a certain restaurant and eat there often, you don't just eat and leave without paying the bill, right?
I am not saying help all 979 bands on your ipod, but pick 2 or 3 of your favorites that may need your support more than you know. So if you can, buy merch or an album, it will make their job easier for YOU to enjoy.
And if you read this article and it doesn't motivate you or make you think twice at all, then YOU are the person it was written for.
My favorite part of the article:
Bottom line: If you want to help a band, see them in concert and buy a T-shirt at their show. Consider buying a physical album instead of downloading it, and purchase it directly from the band instead of a mass retailer. And next time you call a band a “sellout,” it’s worth considering why they agreed to license a song to a commercial hocking beer or clothing. “If you can put your music in a car commercial, put it in the car commercial,” Rickly says. “I have so many friends that are in underground punk bands that never, ever do commercials. They’re viewed as these Holy Grail bands that never sell out—and their day job is writing jingles for commercials. It’s the same thing. People can call us sellouts all they want. I just wish we could sell out more. I’d have more free time to write music.” alt

TEAR YOU APART She Wants Revenge
I remember when I first heard this song in 2005 right when their EP was released. I thought is was the song that would make "She Wants Revenge" blow up. They received some attention and Geffen records released their full length album. They toured with a few big names, Bloc Party being one of them. This album deserved much more than it received, in the US at least. The UK is a different story, more well known and welcomed. Their second fill length album "This is Forever" was also excellent. So if you like this song, you should definitely check out the rest of their stuff. Hopefully a new album is in the works....

A well deserved shout out to the hardest working lady in the Chicago music scene: SOUTHSIDE.
She supports you...yes, you! Band member, music lover, manager, etc, she is your #1 fan and does it all because she wants to give the local music scene a voice. So please be sure to support her back. Take a few minutes, check out her blog, read some reviews and maybe even drop her a line to let her know she rules.
She doesn't miss a beat, I promise you that. Anyone in the music industry can appreciate how much time and effort goes into her work. She knows every venue owner by name and they know Southside. She knows about 95% of the bands in Chicago and chances are she has done a review on them at some point in time. All I know is to commit to something so full heartily like she does, it deserves an applause. So if you are in a Chicago band and she hasn't done a review yet, send her an email and I bet she is at your next show.
Cheers!
Laura
