Tonight I finally saw my favorite band, Explosions in the Sky, live. I've listened to them non stop since I was a teen, and the amount of art I've made, scenes I've thought about in my head, and life things I've mused while listening to them is countless. To say the band is very formative for me doesn't begin to describe it.
I am notorious for having listened to them every night to bed for years to the point it was an ongoing joke that if I saw them live I'd just instantly fall asleep.
I didn't, but I cried a lot.

Here's a list of my 5 impactful artists:
youtube
Radiohead is number one, I feel like I had to get over my judgment of music that my dumbass thought was too soft or sad. I used to overcompensate for my lack of masculinity by only listening to hard and fast stuff. An ex used to love Radiohead but I was too dull to get it at the time. When I actually listened to Radiohead maybe a decade later because of a hippy I played World of Warcraft with, I was blown away! I loved Everything in it's right place, How to disappear completely and Idioteque.
youtube
Sigur Ros is my second! I first listened to them sometime in high school. I was drinking and drugging at the time and one morning, hungover, after a party a guy who's not my friend anymore put on Sigur Ros and it was beautiful. Just the instrumentation alone was stunning and moving but the singing of Sigur Ros really hits the spot. It helped show me vulnerability and appreciation for stuff that wasn't Job for a Cowboy or something.
youtube
Animals as Leaders takes my spot number 3! They really showed me the beauty of complexity in rhythm as well as just musicianship in general. I was blown away by their debut and it's left a mark on me to where I always look for technical music that's also beautiful.
youtube
The fourth spot goes to Against Me! Transgender Dysphoria Blues is such a bedrock album for people who are figuring out their queerness. The angst, the dysphoria, the good, bad and ugly of it. I feel like that time around the record release and the Video series that used it as a soundtrack really made a difference in a lot of trans people's lives. I know it helped me accept myself and come out of the closet.
youtube
And at number 5 we have Explosions in the Sky! The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place helped me through so many bouts of deep depression. To this day their records still make me cry. Just the hopefulness that doesn't feel naive and the warmth of sincerity really helped me keep in touch with my humanity and stay alive after these rough years.

Percy, Fjord, and Laudna:
This great evil - where's it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doing this? Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light, mocking us with the sight of what we mighta known? Does our ruin benefit the earth, aid the grass to grow and the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you, too? Have you passed through this night? (A Thin Red Line, as Quoted in the Explosions in the Sky song "Have You Passed Through This Night?")
Laura's character's: Counterpoint: I'm going to kiss you.

Here it is, the first song from my upcoming EP As The World Burns I Play My Guitar! I wrote this whilst Krystall was playing the Witcher III. I tried to imagine what kinda music would go through Geralt’s head when he lays his head down after a hard days witching. I suspected it would probably sound a bit like Explosions In The Sky but heavier... Oh and LA was on fire at the time too, both from riots and wildfires.
