For my music pentathlon i went to see the alumni jazz band at CSPAC; I used to be a jazz saxophonist when I was younger so I still love jazz music, especially performed live.

For my lit/speaker pentathlon event, I went to the Queer Monologues in Stamp on April 20th.  It was like an open mic event for people in the queer community; my favorite piece that was performed was a poem by a girl who grew up in Sri Lanka, where homosexuality is considered a criminal act, tlaking about discovering her queerness.  It was an amazing piece.

For my theater pentathlon, I went to see “the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” on Broadway during our trip to New York City this weekend!  The play was a fantastic portrayal of the thought process of an autistic child especially in his interactions with others.  As the viewer you were able to see how complex and intelligent the main character’s thought processes were, but how others were unable to understand or interact with him well due to communication barriers.  It was an amazing play, and a great introduction to theater for someone who isn’t really into theater

For my Visual Arts pentathlon I went to the opening of the Honors Thesis show at the Herman Marill Gallery in Art/Soc.  The honors program is an exclusive program for extensive portfolio development that takes place during one’s senior year; they produce spectacular artwork while working together with a member of the staff.  It was very interesting for me to be able to see the kind of work they produce since I’m hoping to get into this program in my senior year.

I love your project, its very sensitive and personal.  I like that you’re taking your models feelings into consideration for the abstracts, I think that tailoring them to each individual model is an excellent way to make each piece pop on its own!  Maybe look into other formats for the abstract besides just the Q&A and the essay?
Abstracts
Today, I started writing the abstracts for each model. I was trying to decide how I should go about this and whether it should be Q&A format or essay format. So as of right now, I am doing both and then I will ask the models, which they think is more appropriate. Some questions I am going to ask are: “How has having a negative body image affected you?” and “How do you deal with body dysmorphia today?”

I know the feeling, while often the concept seems easy to generate ideas at the beginning, as you go along they become more and more difficult.  When this happens, I like to build inspiration boards of images and do sketches based off of them to eventually find a good idea/composition.  I’m excited to see your project progress, hopefully you’ll get past this soon!
4/2/16:
I am having trouble deciding on what I want to do for my other paintings. In the beginning of the semester, I had so many ideas for what I wanted to do that I knew I wouldn’t have time to do them all. Now however, every idea I come up with I think is not good enough. I feel as though I just need to paint an idea and maybe once I start doing one I will think of ways to improve it and brainstorm even more ideas. I think this is the best course of action because if I just think too much about what I need to paint instead of actually painting I will never get anything done.

For the subject of my next piece, I’ve switched from the manatee to the African elephant! I’d like to experiment with a more illustrative style for this painting, maybe do some research into tattoo art for a cool style?

Good News and Bad News
Excellent news for the North American Manatee!  As of this January, the manatee population has recovered enough to be taken off the endangered species list. Previously, the manatee was seriously endangered by injuries from motor boats and fishing nets as well as the destruction of its shallow, warm-water habitat off the coast of Florida. Great job manatee!
Bad news for me; I have to find a new subject for my third painting.  So far my shortlist of contenders is the African Elephant (endangered due to poaching) and the mountain gorilla (endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction). I’m excited to work with developing a composition for either of these animals.
