I've got her! I've got her!! Right there. Here. Come on! Here she is. Help me.
| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 2.11 - Day of Death
I can't express how much I love this episode. It is such a masterpiece that I know that anything I write will automatically pale in comparison… So I'm just going to gush over some of my favorite moments.
The way Tim's emotions are so palpable during the whole episode, but particularly here… For someone who's usually good at compartmentalising, it says a lot about his feelings that he can barely keep it together. The only time we saw him this feral and this distraught was over Isabel and she was his wife… The cinematography and music just enhance everything he is going through here : the golden lights that remind us that Lucy is running out of time… the haunting piano notes or silence that give an eerie atmosphere… the looming dead tree… All of this serve to heighten Tim's feeling of despair.
His distress when Angela announces that she can't tell from the video if Lucy's still alive, is written all over his face. So is the confusion that quickly changes to hope when he spots her moonstone ring… And how symbolic is it that he finds her ring. Or that Lucy threw it as a breadcrumb - for him specifically. He once told her that the most important thing she needed was her eyes - cop eyes - and she remembered it. She left something for him to find, knowing that he would, as she admitted to him later. Because he also taught her during the manhunt that she's never alone. But it goes beyond trust : what she had was faith in him. And the fact that he rapidly recognises her ring just shows how attuned he already is to her. As far as we know, she only wore it twice in his presence : when they won the roundup competition and when she gave him her "evaluation" of him. And yet, he remembered and knew that it wasn't just some random piece of jewellery. Granted, the odds that someone else lost a ring there were minimal. But as we've seen with his Valentine's day present, he was paying attention to her.
And then there's this mix of desperation and hope when he finds out where she's buried, calling the others frantically, digging her out with his bare hands, not even stopping for a shovel… Or when he opens the barrel, not knowing if she's merely unconscious or not breathing… When he breathes life back to her… Armstrong's look says it all : what's driving Tim is something far more powerful than just guilt. Or duty.
There's also this immense sigh of relief that can be heard once Lucy regains consciousness… The way he's gently putting one hand under her head to make her more comfortable and help her get her bearings, maintaining contact with her to ground her… It's such a contrast to how feral he was before. Or the way he holds her close to him at first when she starts crying, trying to comfort her before hugging her tightly, cradling her, swaying a bit, with his hand in her hair… The way her trembling hand is gripping Tim, holding onto him like a lifeline… How she's hiding in his embrace and he's giving her some sense of privacy when she breaks down… How he's whispering soothing words to her - and I love that we can't really hear what he's telling her, that everybody else are giving them time and space. It adds to this feeling of intimacy, to this idea of privacy he's giving her despite the fact that they're surrounded by their friends and colleagues - and commander. It's just the two of them in that moment. That hug was as much for her than for him. After the ordeal she went through, Lucy desperately needed to feel safe again - or as safe as possible. And Tim himself needed the reassurance that she was alive. To quote another show - he cares, a lot more than he's supposed to. And it was in full display in this episode.

You know me so well. Too well.
| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 2.11 - Day of Death
This scene is like a balm to the soul… It's pure softness and just what these two needed after such a harrowing experience.
Tim spending the whole night at Lucy's bedside, guarding over her, making sure she would feel safe by waking up to a familiar face is exactly the type of thing a husband would do… This is after all what he did for Isabel after she was shot. His face when Lucy actually wakes up is so soft. Almost boyish. He looks both hopeful and relieved. Especially since she immediately starts teasing him on his choice of reading material. There's something precious in the way he's trying to make her laugh, in the way he's denying staying all night, looking all bashful… Or how she is looking right through him, clearly knowing better, and letting him get away with his little white lie. It's as if they're sharing a secret. She's gazing at him with such fondness here. Both of their defenses are down : they're simply basking in each other's presence.
The fact that he knew what she would want to eat and had the foresight to get it in advance just highlights their closeness. It's how he says it too - like he has to think about it for a second even though he already has her order ready with him. It's a dorky move but so sweet. Again, he's trying to bring some levity and coax her into smiling and it works. But what adds another layer to this moment is that he's taking a page from her own playbook : she sent him meals when he was recovering from the quarantine house, to make him feel better and less alone. Now it's his turn to do it for her. And let's not forget the song that can be heard in the background at that instant : I'll come and find you. It couldn't be more apropos.
The way they are looking at each other the whole time… The fondness, the caring… The heart eyes. They stay gravitating towards the other, even after Grace, Jackson and John join them in the room. Just like when he pulled her from the barrel, where it felt like it was just the two of them. And that last exchange couldn't be more true. You know me so well, she says with her teasing tone… Too well, he answers with his biggest fondest smile. They both finally found someone who takes the time to get to know them, the real them. It's all those little moments that just show the depth of their care and love (maybe not romantic, but love it is) and cimented their bond… That changed their dynamic and relationship fundamentally.

Do you need…anything? The last 24 hours back. I'm afraid I don't have that power. A hug. Yeah. Come here. It's okay.
| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 4.01 - Life and Death
One of my favourite moment… There's something so intimate with this scene, like we're intruding. It's how Tim is particularly attentive and thoughtful, immediately inviting Lucy to stay at his place, so she doesn't end up at her apartment where she would only be reminded of Jackson's death. He's right that she should not be alone and honestly, I don't think he wanted to be by himself either.
It's how, for a little moment, they're back to their usual bickering, fighting over who sleeps on the coach and Lucy not caving in… But there's also this uncertainty between them : Tim wants to help but doesn't know how and Lucy looks completely lost. Her little comment about wanting the 24 hours back is so reminiscent of her wish for a time machine back in Now and Then… Her request for a hug is so bold and so hesitant at the same time, as if she blurted it before realising what she just said. Only he doesnt let her take it back because this is something he can do for her. If he can give her some comfort, he's absolutely going to do it. I sometimes feel like this moment is a window into what he might have wanted to do back after Day of Death. But they weren't as close then.
It's how this hug is so soft, between the little come here, the way he seems to envelop her, his hand in her hair… It doesn't last very long but it's enough to send them into a spiral. The moment they pull away and are just staring into each other's eyes… It's full of tension. Tim looks almost breathless. They're this close to share a kiss before he turns away completely. The pining after that… Both in their bed, fidgeting and looking towards the other's direction, itching to go there… Lucy getting up before hearing Tim on the phone and sitting right back down…
It's how this was a moment full of possibilities, at the wrong time. And to me, this is really where it all began for them. When they started realising that there might be more to their bond than mere friendship. That longing just hit them in the face and they suddenly didn't know what was happening. But once Tim got that phone call, this realisation took a backseat. Maybe it was because none of them were in the right emotional space… Maybe they were scared to risk losing the other right after losing a friend… Maybe they thought it was unrequited… Maybe a little bit of all the above. Whatever it was, they got back to their old dynamic. Or at least, tried to. But the shift was still there. Even after Lucy became Tim's aide and once again, his direct subordinate. They still became much closer. Lucy no longer had Jackson and Angela was busy with her family. They did things outside work, much more personal than paintballing, like fixing a childhood home or going on a double date… It's how this hug planted the seed that blossomed for a season… before a kiss turned everything upside down.

| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 5.22 - Under Siege
The choice of having this scene mirror the one in Life and Death is brilliant. Especially considering the similarities in the circumstances. The way Tim envelopes Lucy, how he's cradling her… It's all the same. But it's not just the hug : the feeling of intimacy is still there. Only it is amplified even more by the lack of words. And this is where it differs. Where it goes further than that first scene.
This time, Tim doesn't need any prompting, he immediately knows what Lucy needs. This time, there's no hesitation before she falls into his arms. There's no rush to pull away. They stay in each other's embrace, finding refuge in each other's arms. This time, the hug feels even more personal, with the way she's leaning on his left side, the heart side… with the way he can freely kiss her head and rest his head on hers… with the way she burrows herself deeper into his arms.
It's everything they may have wanted to do after Jackson's death, or after Rosalind's escape and finding Chris. This time, they don't need to restrain themselves. They don't need to hide behind undercover work. They don't need to go back home on their own. They never have to be alone anymore : they have each other.
