loverboy
The last girl I kissed was at a club As always, I wanted to go, but didn’t want to stay Drowning there in the heat and the dark I try not to think about how much I want to be loved Only how lucky I am to be seen at all
What I mean is that I would’ve been happy with anything She gave me, a hug or a slap or a wink from across the room I could’ve been whatever she needed Or wanted, I’m not picky
I always take what I can get and leave the rest for prouder men Content to pack up my scraps for later To pore over them like sacred texts, hoard them like gold Swallow them, piece by piece, and let them change me For better or for worse
Perhaps it should matter more to me what direction I am altered But isn’t all change death? I assume what I consume Or perhaps I am unmade—unraveling patchwork, was-am-will-be The parts that suit her folding over the parts I cannot shed
What I mean is that, standing in that doorway with lipstick Smeared in the corner of my mouth, I would have let her Do anything; fuck me, kill me, make me cry Even hold me—almost disgusted—like someone else’s sick kid I am sick; laid-up waiting for the cure to need
Waiting to emerge from my papery skin, finally lovable To be cherished for my smile and my eyes and my loyalty Rather than crushed and melted and reforged Until the mirror is a stranger

ironing out the magic system for Riversong,, so far i have a few different categories under the cut
bloodline magic: this is what Alra has, it's passed down through the line of the ruling family. technicallyyyy it's dragon magic, but that knowledge has been kinda lost over the years..there's a folk tale that supposedly explains the origins of the royal magic and the dragon connection and everything, but (after the elimination of the oral tradition in favor of written record) people kind of treat it like a bedtime story rather than a legit explanation
book magic: the majority of magic in the world falls under this. there's an official magic school in the kingdom, but anyone can learn magic from a book, it's like learning plumbing on your own. it's hard as hell and you can really fuck up your house if you practice before your skills are at a certain point, but there's no law against it.
healing magic: this category doesn't technically exist, but the important thing is there's ambient magic in the atmosphere (on account of more dragon stuff, that'll be its own post i think) that makes what we would probably consider herbal medicine INTO potion work. like book magic, anyone can learn this, though it tends to be more organized (the current potion maker in a village will take on an apprentice)
dark magic: usually gained through making a pact with an evil force, very rare and very dangerous.
n e ways, i should probably give the types snappier names, but knowing myself it's more likely they won't be named at all

midas is one of my favorite characters i've ever come up with because he 's so contradictory. like. he wants to be a philosopher so badly but doesn't let himself think too deeply about his own worldview. he's gay. he's homophobic. he's a man in a relationship with a butch lesbian. he named himself midas because he thinks he's cursed. he thinks he's a genius. he's full of so much love and he's convinced himself that showing it is completely unforgivable

I'm not usually a big outliner, but I've been trying to work on a cohesive linear flow for Riversong,, does anyone have any tips?

"You need to hydrate or you'll only feel worse after this." Alex said. He handed me a glass of water then, seeing my trembling hands, helped guide it to my mouth.
"Why?" I croaked between sips.
"Because alcohol dries your body out."
"No," I cleared my throat. "Why do you love me?" Why are you taking care of me? I've been a piece of shit all-" my life, I thought, but that would only make Alex sad to hear. "...all week."
"I'm taking care of you because I love you," Alex said gently. "And i love you because...i don't know, you always buy the right kind of peanut butter."
"That's not a real reason."
"Do I need a reason to love you? I just do."
"I'm not a good person." I felt tears threatening to fall, but I would've rather died than start crying.
"I know." Alex said, which I appreciated more than half-baked reassurances. "I love you anyway."

golden hour characters
Midas Young: mid-twenties, kind of an alcoholic, starts the story as a terrible friend and a selfish partner. He's a bitch, he's delusional, he loves so much and can't show it at all. He's stuck in a time loop with the person he hates most (himself). At the story's beginning, he is fired from his job as a line cook at a diner.
Maia Castor: very smart, takes no shit, deeply practical. she loves Midas very much, but is brutally realistic about the kind of person he is (unreliable) and doesn't rely on him much. She is a self-taught artist and graphic designer.
Alex Muñoz: a sweet man who forgives too easily. He prefers not to think about Midas' flaws, and is there for him no matter what, but is in reality very deeply hurt every time Midas fails to be good to him. He works as a bartender. The time loop begins the day before his birthday party.

riversong characters:
Alra Valencia Idabe: the lost princess of Riversong, raised as a peasant by her late parents' last loyal bodyguard. Alra has the potential to be a good queen, but she struggles to make decisions under pressure and takes her losses hard. Like all nobles in Riversong, she's a dark elf
Caeda Lauden: a hired sword who grew up with Alra in their village, she follows Alra to the castle to help her rediscover her heritage. She is brave and loyal, but very immature about her own emotions and out of touch with others'. She is a half-orc (this caused tension in the village she grew up in)
Jema Idlemorn: a healer who travels with Caeda on her mercenary jobs. She joins Caeda and Alra on their journey to the castle. She is intelligent and well-traveled. She has feelings for Caeda, and tends to be self-sacrificial in a way that goes unappreciated. She is a light elf
Vindan Clay: the bodyguard who raised Alra. A stubborn old man who doesn't explain himself enough. He is human and struggled to prepare Alra properly for her magical destiny and failed to teach her about her history as a dark elf (Jema helps some, but light and dark elves aren't 1:1)

WIP roundup (yeehaw)
Riversong (fantasy): swords and secret royalty and a magical inheritance! this one i have the most fun with, even though it has the most angst. by god I'm putting these guys in Situations
Golden Hour (spec fic): time loop kind of romance? it's about falling in love with yourself, becoming a version of yourself you can love, or something in-between. the more serious of the two (albeit much lower stakes)
when it comes to short stories, I tend to write those as the mood hits me, and they range across genres
