Life updates from Akira Toriyama included in Dragon Ball volumes part 2

one thing i've always understood as Akira Toriyama's influence on manga, even if just assumption on my part, was how his cartooning came to bear when he started writing pure action manga. when I think of his contemporaries I think of overblown special moves like Saint Seiya or the gory fist clusters of FotNS

to me it seemed what Toriyama brought to the table was the satisfaction of clarity in martial arts

when you read his fight scenes, which may have become notorious when animated for dragging on, there's no question about what's happening in the action

a clear kick to the jaw

a clean line of action on Yajirobe's slice

I first noticed this clarity pretty quickly early on in the General Tao fights during the red ribbon arc, where entire fight scenes playing out with these clear motions on the pages

Even as it got more detailed later on, the clarity stayed

clear hits on clear fight scenes

and dirtier but still completely legible lines of action

And when he started introducing the big over the top special moves we got the same thing quite often in DB: that simple visual clarity amplifying the excitement

i'm not super coherent on it right now, i'm not the biggest shonen action fan all the time and maybe Toriyama didn't introduce the world to visually clear and interesting fights in manga.

but when I see any action manga showing off clean fight choreography or sick ass lazer beams that show off clear shockwaves of destruction, i'll always be thinking of the GOAT

Finally feel like I can say something coherent, so here goes... I say this without a shred of exaggeration: Akira Toriyama was legitimately one of the most important creative figures of the last 50 years. His work, especially Dragon Ball, has influenced SO much even outside its own medium. Movies, TV, cartoons, comic books, video games, MUSIC... all of it. You can see his fingerprints in so many other works. Even now, artists and writers, voice actors and animators, musicians and game devs are all mourning him and reflecting on the impact he had on their own work. Titans of anime and manga are sharing in this pain. The craziest thing about this though? The humility he had in spite of it. He was always reluctant to be in the spotlight, preferred to keep his head down and just work, never really worried that much about public perception of himself. Part of what makes him such an icon, man. Losing him is losing a piece of our shared history. It's something that resonates deep in the hearts of everyone his work touched. This is just... such a loss. And I can't even begin to imagine what his family is going through right now. Praying for them all. Rest in Peace to a literal Legend, an absolute Icon, and a personal inspiration in more ways than I could ever express properly.

Famed manga creator Akira Toriyama has passed away on March 1, 2024 at age 68 due to acute subdural hematoma.

Toriyama began his first serialized manga, Dr. Slump, in 1980, and it inspired two television anime and multiple films. Toriyama followed it up with Dragon Ball, which ran from 1984 to 1995, and is still inspiring manga and anime sequels and spinoffs today. The manga's Dragon Ball anime adaptation, its sequel Dragon Ball Z, and its other numerous sequels and anime films are equally as well-known as the manga, and its hero Goku has become a character known throughout the world.

Toriyama is also well-known as the character designer for the Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon and Tobal games.

Most recently, Toriyama was working closely with the production for the Dragon Ball Daima anime series, the most recent anime series based on Dragon Ball, and is credited for the new anime's story and character designs.

But if anyone can help my parents, I'd be eternally grateful. I'm doing everything I can, but I know my help is just a drop in the bucket and they've run into hardship after hardship lately. I just want to keep them afloat, keep them from drowning... but I can't do it alone. Much as I wish I could.

Hello, my name is Brittany, and this fundraiser is for my parents -- the two people who have helped me through everything in life, good and bad -- and now, I pray that I might be able to give a fraction of that back to them.

My dad has always experienced pretty severe depression and, unfortunately, he's very medication resistant (meaning that they just don't work, not that he's avoided them.) He's been through more than I can count over the years, and finally, the doctors decided that ECT treatment might be his best shot. Ultimately, this is good, but during this treatment, he can't work, drive, nor is he really supposed to be alone for long periods of time. (If you'd like to know more about ECT, here is the link to the mayoclinic about it, but there's plenty of information out there.)

Dad has always been the major bread winner, and I know my mom has been doing everything she can to make things easier and run smoothly, but there's only so much a single person can do. Bills were missed, bills couldn't be paid because all the security information was, unfortunately, hidden behind a brain that just... can't remember right now. The memory lapse side effects of ECT are hitting dad hard, which is making all of this so much harder.

Companies are less than sympathetic, and they don't really take "he can't remember" as an answer when they're calling and demanding to know why something hasn't been paid, and late fees stack up fast, on top of just... life and trying to make ends meet when the household income has gone down to less than half when one person can't work. Bills need to be paid, that's that. But now that everything has been paid in a rush... There's still more bills to come; things are in the red and it feels like there's no up right now.

I am currently in the middle of a disability application, so my hours were already limited with low income, but I'm trying to scrap together what I can. On top of all of this, dad is starting to get sick (fatigue, lethargy, sore throat, cough... all the symptoms of Covid, which is the very LAST thing they need right now.) Regardless of if it is Covid or not, he can't go to his treatments with those symptoms/when ill. Which means there will be an even longer period of time where he can't work... Which means everything is still reliant on the income of a single person, and unfortunately... it's not enough.

Right now, I wish I knew a better way of asking for help without metaphorically airing out all their dirty laundry. I don't want them to lose their home or risk facing the wrath of collector's with little to no sympathy for what's going on. Things have always been tight for them, but they always made it work with smiles on their faces. Together, they're an amazing team, but... even the strongest struggle, and I just want to help them however I can. Truthfully, I know this much isn't enough. Hell, it's not even a month's rent in most places, but right now, they can't even afford groceries. I hope to give them that much at least, but if I can give them even the smallest little nugget of relief from bills with help from all of you, then I'll to everything I can to make that happen.
