Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Daniel took his bike for a short ride after moving into his new apartment complex. He was pissed that he hadn’t gotten a choice in anything. That he was just another piece of luggage that his mother loaded into the car to take with her across the country when he spotted someone on the beach he was biking past. He’d been invited to the beach, just that was tomorrow and he wasn’t really in the mood for meeting people yet. But standing on the beach was a guy his age, the sunlight sparkling off the water and his back was turned towards Daniel.  Blood Orange

Daniel’s teeth ached. They had for as long as he could remember. Sometimes they throbbed and his jaw got sore and his father, he remembered would tell him to always relax his jaw, to relax his mouth and that helped, it’d ease it.  Everything hurt. Or had. But right now, in the moment it didn’t. Everything was the phantom feeling of pain. His knee didn’t hurt. His knuckles. All the scrapes didn’t bother him any more. And that never-ending ache of his teeth…it was gone. Soothed.

But they got him to the room and Johnny left to go hunt down some ice for the water and maybe he said some crackers or something to soak up the liquor.

Demetri was staying late at the dojo, practicing, trying to clear his head. He’d been there for hours and was exhausted so he decided for a cool down he'd wander through Miyagi-do. Awhile ago Mr. LaRusso had moved things around and opened up Mr. Miyagi’s room. There had always been an unspoken agreement that no one was to go in there, but curiosity was something Demetri found insatiable.

I'm a simple person, so- A, B, and C?

A: How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]? Well you didn't pick one. So I'll do a lot of my fics, but not all of them.

Root Beer Floats and Green Tea- The root beer was supposed to be a stand in for Johnny and the green tea for Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. I wanted to give Johnny a cute tradition with his mother and root beer floats after a tournament tied in well with everything else and it was a stand in for his life with his mother, plus soda can be a little fizzy an 'volitile' in comparison to a smooth but sometimes bitter tea. Wisteria Sherbert- Wisteria takes a lot of water and isn't the smartest thing to have on a house in LA where it's a drought. But it shows how rich it is. And sherbert is something you can make from it but you also have to be careful because it's not all edible and inexperience with it can be dangerous. So we have a/b/o and Daniel interacting with inexperience around an omega but also there's a lot of danger of mishandling because of Terry Silver and Kreese and a lot of assumptions being made. But also how when properly loved and cared for Johnny (the wisteria) can bloom in even in a drought. A Feast for Fools was a very serious not serious april fools day post of taking Terry Silver and Johnny Lawrence and trying to write them the best possible happy ending/fic and because I posted it on april fools day and wanted them to be fools for each other in the fic it just worked. I have thought about writing them more. Double Layer Chocolate Cake is because there's two ships happening in tandem and because it was a reverse bang combo of two of pfaerie's fics. It also kept coming up as a dessert to give a loved one. Peachy Keene: this is a time loop time travel fic mostly about Robby who is not having a peachy life. The pun was too perfect to pass up. Pineapple Upside Down cake: It's a reverse Au thus the upside down bit and they eventually live in Okinawa so thus the pineapple. Spoilers I guess, but it's a prequel to bagel and lox for me and a maple bar for you so....(I feel bad for the people who maybe don't realize all the whump about to happen because they haven't seen GJ's art that I based the series off of or haven't read the next fic, though to be fair no clue if anyone reading it hasn't. It's been a somewhat quiet fic response wise.) B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience? I mentioned to the last asker of this question yakgwa. There's bits and pieces of my interests/personal experience filtered throughout the fics I guess. For Hardboiled Gunpowder Tea I mean I spent most of my early childhood obsessed with detective novels and mysteries and usually had a notebook to write clues on and a magnifying glass and got little chemistry prompts/experiments to do in the mail (Hi yes nerd shush) and did actually get paid to find stuff for people from time to time. A lot of the prompts or ideas generally come from things I already really enjoy. Like I also was obsessed with space as a kid and paranormal/folklore which I blame my dad for. He'd studied folklore for his masters (which he didn't end up getting because he decided not to turn in his final paper) and so our house was filled with books on them and I'd sit on the floor in his library reading about all these different creatures and then go to lectures about bigfoot with him or faeries. Apparently as a small child I also told him I'd met an alien and they'd given me a rock and he was so bummed that I hadn't run to get him so he too could meet the alien. (Which is why even though I don't have a clue what rock it is I don't throw out any rocks I happen to find amongst my stuff just in case) I also grew up around a lot of nature and plants, and my grandmother tried her hardest to teach me about all of them and what ones were edible and what not and a lot about flowers. I also cooked with her a lot and then later with my aunt a lot, like every weekend for her and her guests who were visiting from far off places. Really there's just lots of random mixes in there for the different fics. Oh I also found a plaque after I moved last December for personal attendance I don't remember getting.

C: What character do you identify with most? Oh man this is hard. So I love writing about Johnny but I think it depends. There's little facets with each of them. Like for Daniel grief. My parents are gone as are my grandparents and it just sort of never lets you go, which also is something echo'd in Johnny in Cobra Kai. and how everyone grieves differently. And like I feel like you grieve for different people differently too. There's also mixes of them for my childhood in various deep ways. So any time I think to go this one, I identify with this one, then I end up thinking about it and going well I also identify with this one and... I mean hell sometimes I've also been Bobby before trying to advise a friend I care about but they're too deep in it to let anyone help them. I've also watched family members get sick and was told they were going to get better only to find out they weren't after being told they would and sat having those blindsided awful moments like Tory. So again, it's a total mix which I think is why these movies and shows hold such staying power with me and why I usually avoid this question because I could sit here for hours psychoanalyzing myself and the characters and finding those little ties and it's just too raw so I'd rather just do the cathartic thing and write fics lol.

B, F

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience? Beyond pieces, like grief or things that add flavor, or even places I've traveled to I would say the one that immediately comes to mind is Yakgwa. I lived in Korea for a while and didn't speak the language and the people around me filled my life with food and treats and I never knew what I was eating or half the time where I was going or what was happening but it was great and I loved it. So when @baldwinboy5ive requested Tory and Yoon I decided to explore a what if of what if this girl going through this sudden painful grief ends up in Korea and how would that look and drew on as many of my own lost or confusion that I just sort of went with the flow of to instill. F: Share a snippet from one of your favourite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it. I have so many. But I'll just pick one fic this time.

It’d been maybe one of her worse lies, when she’d been tired of answering his questions about when Dad would come back and where he was, so she pulled out the adult favorite: “He’s on a farm up north, running wild and free with the other farm animals.”

So this is from Umibudo (Chapter 15: Nuchi Du Takara) and I'm going to pull a few from the same chapter because I love Umibudo and it was a TON of work. But I love this little line of dialogue because it's so telling how Laura views her ex and how that hits with Johnny. Like she's so pissed at Johnny's father that she's using how adults clichely tell kids their pets have died without telling them. Like where's dad? Who knows, the bastards as good as dead.

“Hey man…Chozen…bud…hon? What’s wrong?” Johnny’s own mouth felt like it was full of sand and his throat was on fire. He felt awful, dizzy. “Ocean took my bride away. Waiting to turn into foam.” It came out so utterly miserable.

In this part of Umibudo Johnny's like nearly drowned and wakes up and Chozen's just completely given up and is waiting to 'die' because Johnny's gone so like his dramatic mer-self is ready to just become sea foam because there's no other choice and he's so dramatic that he doesn't even realize Johnny is there. And Johnny's literally dragging him away from the edge even though everything hurts and he did nearly die but he's not going to let a mermaid turn into seafoam on his watch and he's also fighting against essentially mermaid song which is so utterly tragic that they both end up crying because Chozen hasn't clocked that Johnny is there and he's fine. He's also testing out a pet name, trying to figure things out and also accepting Chozen and how much Chozen loves him. A true turning point in the fic. But really for the most part I think to an extent Umibudo is a bit of a comedy and has this humor in it and in the dialogue that I really enjoyed writing, but it also wins for dialogue because I dug up all these guides on Okinawan and tried to write romanized Okinawan dialogue for Chozen,. Is it right? Probably not (I mean it's an E rated fic and there are some words that I just could not find lol so I had to make do), but it was a fun attempt and it was cool to learn about ao3 desktop features with hover text that you could do.

G, I, T, and Z please!

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order? I hop around but generally in a direct path. I was told it's sort of like a garden path. I try to write everything as I go but I've found, especially more lately, that THE SCENE demands to be written and then when the chapter needs to go up I flush it out more then. But also sometimes I'll just get into a groove and knock out a bunch of chapters ready to be edited (very lightly re-read to try and catch things so thus spelling/grammar errors) before posting. And those are also really fun. I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)? What does a guilty pleasure entail really? For me romance mostly I guess. I'm here for the relationships. For diving deep, or pulling it apart and getting into all the mess in any situation or caused by any reason. I want them to have happy endings, whatever that might mean. Though generally together. And 'weird' stuff is always fascinating to me. I like AU's I guess. I mean I've written uh... sex pollen and mermaids and a/b/o and I'll read that stuff too and more, but I guess I just want there to be heart, I want to go on the journey together, and a bit of care in there to pull through any pain that might happen or whump. And if there's that right amount of love and care and happy ending eventually in the fic I will probably read just about anything if the dynamic is right. T: Any fandom tropes you can't stand?

See I hesitate to say any because there is probably one written out there or that could be written out there that I will like. I mean I hadn't ever written a/b/o until I was a secret santa and now I've got two fics and the other one isn't even a gift for anyone lol. I try to keep an open mind. I think maybe it's the unhappy endings that I don't like. Where the characters get broken and no one puts them back together again. The hurt without comfort. Or when you can tell...or maybe it just feels, like someone doesn't like a character so they're just brutally tortured through the fic and like thankful for that crumb of attention and go home without any comfort or worse off than they started. I guess there needs to be some sort of after care lol. Z: Major character death—do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can't tolerate? Not a fan lol. In media it depends on how it's done, right? Like if they killed off a character because they actor/actress wanted to go work on something else and they couldn't think of a better way to write them out of the show then I hate it. (Teen Wolf looking at you) or if characters are dying left and right, also really struggle to handle that. There's an ant arc in hunter x hunter, where for a good dozen episodes or so they introduce characters and you're like oh I missed this character and then they're just gone in a brutal ways and I stuck with it but nearly gave up because some of it just was too ick for me. So when it comes to fic it really truly depends. Like I understand for TKK/CK universe some characters are gone. And if those characters and their grief are a driving force or a seasoning to a fic, I'm totally fine. But if other characters are killed off I dunno. I mean I wrote a fic where Daniel was a ghost but I ensured he had the ability to come back. Because it felt too sad otherwise. But if it's a well done paranormal romance where they can still interact I think I'm fine, but otherwise if it's just sad and heart wrenching then it's not for me. Like I said there's got to be a chance at that happy ending somehow. So I think if the fic is about a character and it's a major character for the fic that dies it's just too much usually for me. Now if it's a side character for that fic and they die or are killed off screen and I dunno. I mean I have killed Terry and John Kreese a few times lol. I guess I should treat this not as a never but as a it's just gotta have that happy ending in there somewhere. Like I guess since I mostly ship Johnny with a harem of guys from the show and movies then as long as the main couple is alive and their friends/family that support them are alive then I'm good. I don't know if that makes sense.
