Startup Spotlight: DeviceHub.net
Curiosity does not always kill the cat, as the saying says. Quite the opposite, we may say, if we look at the story of DeviceHub.net: it helps you build a successful IoT startup from scratch.
DeviceHub.net is a proud alumni of the Startup Spotlight competition & mentoring program. 35% of our participants closed deals as a result of attending the program (check out the Startup Spotlight Progress Report for more). And the next one could by you! Apply by October 30, 2015 and get ready to close deals & compete for the 20k cash prizes.
Tumblr media
The story of DeviceHub.net begins more than four years ago, when Ionut Cotoi (CEO), Constantin Craciun (CTO) and Cristiana Bogateanu (CMO), the three co-founders, got together with the idea of creating the first Romanian “hacker-space”, using a concept very well known in the US. In a nutshell, they wanted to create a workspace where electronics and programming enthusiasts can work together (the project is currently known as the Technical Youth Creation Centre – inventeaza.ro).
Experienced developers with more than 15 years of experience in both software and hardware (but also with strong marketing and management skills – this being Cristiana’s case), the three co-founders of DeviceHub were also working on their own hardware projects and felt the need of a cloud solution to ensure the communication between all these devices.
“We used Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and other hardware platforms to build devices that measure the electricity produced through alternative sources, the pulse or the body temperature, among others”, they say.
And then came the moment when things started to fall into place: if they were making and selling hardware and software that could be accessed remotely, why not build their own solution that could be used over and over again?
That was the starting point for what is DeviceHub.net today, an integrated solution for IoT projects development, combining cloud integration with business intelligence and providing an unprecedented level of visibility not only into line efficiency, but also into all factory operations. This is possible because DeviceHub.net has a unique interface that gathers data and instantly generates smart reports at factory lever. Plan managers can thus have immediate access to data such as equipment efficiency, line efficiency, data visualization tools, and alerts from any location.
Tumblr media
The Co-Founders of DeviceHub.net tap into one of the hottest segments in the tech world today, a technology that is estimated to generate 4,6 trillion dollars in value at stake by 2024 through the efficient management of resources, improving employees’ productivity, new business models and increasing the benefits for end users.
“The IoT movement transcends the limits of M2M communication, enabling even devices that do not include the necessary components to connect to the Internet by using an intermediary, non-intrusive device. The Internet of Things is an emerging market and it is certain that the number of connected devices will grow steadily in the years to come”, as DeviceHub.net explains.
According to them, the solution provided by DeviceHub.net is designed for companies willing to improve their production processes in all sectors and to develop smarter products and services. Leading companies are already integrating IoT solutions for reducing production time and increasing scale production, in order to be more competitive and to easily adapt to the unpredictable changes of the environment.
Tumblr media
“Embracing technological innovation brings about more opportunities for growth. Most specific, we address all the manufacturers and stakeholders from the electrical equipment and automation industry or related fields, system integrators, public institutions, as well as developers interested to benefit from the advantages provided by adopting IoT solutions for business or own use”, the Co-Founders explained.
DeviceHub now has 5 enterprise clients and a community of over 2,000 active developers that contributed to the platform with integration of both hardware and web technologies. They offer data gathering, cloud logic, triggers, real time remote control, and analytics, all these in a friendly user interface. Besides, anyone who is curious to experiment in the area of IoT can use the DeviceHub.net platform.
DeviceHub gained momentum and boosted their development by attending various startup programs, competitions & accelerator programs. It all started back in 2014 with Startup Spotlight which opened their door for the hub:raum WARP accelerator in Krakow. And they did not stop here: they further on attended Challenge UP! And they are currently part of the 2015 cohort of Seedcamp.
“Startup Spotlight helped us get into the hub:raum WARP accelerator in Krakow in December 2014. At the end of the program we were the winners and this came as a confirmation that our mission is realistic and useful. However, we also realised that we needed to work harder and do better. That is why we wanted to get more insights on how we can make our business valuable for our customers and we applied for Challenge UP!, hoping to get in touch with the big players in our industry. We were excited to find out that we were chosen among the best 12 IoT startups in Europe”.
Attending various programs helped them not only with mentoring and connections, but also with securing the financing needed for their further development. So far, they received a 5000 EURO cash prize at the end of Startup Spotlight, followed by an 80.000 EUR investment raised from hub:raum.
And their story goes on: the DeviceHub.net Co-Founders are now discussing with potential investors in the field of IoT and manufacturing from the UK and Israel. And their plan for the future is nothing but ambitious: to make DeviceHub.net an open source platform for ambitious developers all around the world.
“We’re entrepreneurs, it’s true. But we’ve always been curious and eager to experiment each and every new technology. Our vision is nothing less than realizing the full potential of the Internet of Things: real-time universal access and control of everything from everywhere”, they conclude.

The Kibu hackathon experience or why we love hacking around!
When we learned about the Kitchen Budapest hackathon for home automation we just knew  we have to attend. The promise of open source hardware, young innovators and good programming skills is what convinced us and we gladly accepted the invitation. The topic of the hackathon “Home, smart home” was a perfect match for us, so we provided contestants with the DeviceHub.net Internet of Things platform for rapid prototyping, as well as assisted them during the whole quest.
The first hackathon took place in Budapest in the Kitchen Budapest revenue, where we benefited from their amazing electronics workplace in order to create cases for prototypes during the event.
(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));
Hackathon'15 at KiBu
:)Great news! The video is ready of the 24-hour-long hackathon at KiBu!Watch this video and you can have an insight of the best moments of this inspiring 24 hours, in which great ideas have been developed and new prototypes were born in the topic of Smart Home. Thanks for the video to the team of BEET!Enjoy! :)
Posted by Kitchen Budapest on Wednesday, October 14, 2015
The event as such debuted with some interesting presentations from Telekom and Fablab Budapest representatives aimed to establish the context and the vision of the hackathon. Afterwards, we got together with all the attending teams to the technical part: the very innovative software framework that Peter Varo did for the contestants that makes working with the Raspberry Pi a breeze and the DeviceHub.net platform intro addressing the key concepts and APIs. It was after the introductory part that we really moved to action. Firstly, the teams did a brainstorming session to see what ideas they got and what they could do in the 24h available. Some wild ideas appeared pretty quick, which we helped refine through the night and they excitedly started working on both hardware and software.
Towards the morning the real hackathon challenges kicked in: sleep deprivation and pesky bugs, but we gained some much needed strength with a healthy breakfast and the teams were ready for the last push before the presentations.
The highly awaited moment arrived and each team presented their project. “I was impressed by their dedication to make it look and feel like an Apple keynote. All the exhaustion seemed to disappear and we felt like the prototypes have been in work for a few weeks before showing them in front of us. Of course, sadly, somebody had to win, but in our eyes each team did an amazing effort and project.”, said Constantin Craciun, CTO & Co-Founder DeviceHub.net who represented our team at the KIBU hackathon.
The winner team of the Budapest hackathon was the team that created an elegant device which showed the relative location of your loved ones combining a nice UI and a non-intrusive approach to solve such a sensitive issue.
After a week, a second event of this kind took place in Szeged. The teams were once again amazing and the winner was a simple approach of home gateway that could be used to assure both security and increased comfort of the home owner.
“All in all, it was a cool experience. We learned a lot from the teams and we really hope that the teams went home confident that they are capable of building interesting prototypes that could one day become businesses. We did our best to make them feel so”, concluded Constantin Craciun, CTO & Co-Founder DeviceHub.net.

IoT for Industry 4.0: Real Case Studies and Applicability
The concept of Internet of Things emphasises the fact that any electronic device can be connected to the Internet in order to gather, generate or exchange data, thus proving an extended applicability.
It is the case for many industries that energy frequently represents the second largest operational cost. But energy is hard to monitor and energy fluctuations can have a negative impact on the production line as such. However, most companies lack cost effective measurement systems and modelling tools and/or performance and management tools to optimise energy use in individual production operations, much less in real-time across multiple operations, facilities, or an entire supply chain. It is a fact that each machine comes with a “personalised” software, but more often than not this does not allow a compact view of the data gathered from the production line as a whole. Thus, although data is available, it is hard to understand or visualise, lacking predictive validity in the case of incidents.
Tumblr media
As such, the Internet of Things is not just about the “things”, but moreover about connecting people to the right data, automating processes for cost reduction and enabling inter-dependencies between the operational level and the business level of the organisation. Specifically, IoT becomes a tool for predictive maintenance or an intelligence assurance policy aimed at improving products and services quality through optimising processes.
The IoT movement transcends nowadays the limits of M2M communication, enabling even devices that do not include the respective electronics to connect to the Internet by using an intermediary non-intrusive device. According to Cisco, this technology is poised to generate $4.6 trillion in Value at Stake by 2024, through the efficient management of resources, improving employees’ productivity, new business models and increasing the benefits for end users.
Tumblr media
In this context, DeviceHub.net will conduct on November 6th 2015, between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm (GMT+2), at TechHub Bucharest, the workshop Industry 4.0: Real Case Studies and Applicability. Within the event there will be presented concrete IoT solutions and applications from various industries, such as: manufacturing, telecom, agriculture, transportation, renewable energy etc., aimed to answer the above mentioned problems.
Similarly, tailored use cases will be further discussed based on the main areas of expertise of the participants, in order to enable them to update their business model according to the new opportunities made available by the Internet of Things, such as interconnecting machines, providers, maintenance partners or supply chains.
Thus, industry nowadays can benefit from an unprecedented level of visibility not only into line efficiency, but also into all factory operations, through data gathering using a unique interface and instantly generated smart reports at factory level. Plant managers can now have access to such data as equipment efficiency, line efficiency, data visualisation tools and alerts from any location.
The attendance is free of charge and the workshop addresses all the manufacturers and stakeholders from the electrical equipment and automation industry or related fields, system integrators, public institutions, as well as developers interested to benefit from the advantages provided by adopting IoT solutions for business or own use.
To register for the workshop please fill in the online form available here.

We've made DeviceHub.net free of charge for developers!
Hey there! We are entrepreneurs, it’s true. But we’ve always been curious and eager to experiment each and every new technology. So, we recall the times when, as students, we were not able to explore the latest trends. Or how, based on our constant need for knowledge sharing and collaboration, we decided to create our own makerspace. That is why, we would like to give back and make DeviceHub.net open-source, for ambitious developers all around. We are always interested in what you built using our platform so if you have an awesome project, send it to us with the tutorial & the code sample and we will showcase it on the DeviceHub.net platform. The makers who will submit the best tutorial, will receive “The contributor of the month” title. And, since we ourselves are developers and DIY makers, we have already posted our contributions in the DeviceHub.net special section for tutorials, practical examples & API documentation: https://devicehub.net/dev.
Get started!

Check out now the latest improvements made on DeviceHub.net!
Hey there!
We wanted you to know that based on your feedback, we’ve improved DeviceHub.net IoT platform.
Here are the cool stuff you can benefit from:
We’ve developed a new feature called “Clone Device”. You can now clone the devices based on a “Master” device from the Project view. This is an excellent way to easily duplicate devices, together with the sensors and actuators within. The cloned device can also be updated if the master device properties changes.
We’ve removed the rate limit across the platform and allowed all accounts tiers to send data ten times per second. That means more data can be sent even faster than before.
We’ve started creating video tutorials for DeviceHub.net - IFTTT integration. You can find a home automation example with video and code sample here.
We’ve added PHP and C libraries and improved the Python and C++ ones. This should enable users to get familiar with the mentioned languages and to easily access DeviceHub.net platform.
We’ve also started posting interesting projects on Hackster.io and you can start check them out here.
