Me, just recovering from a mental health crisis, seeing the worst year of pollen my area has ever seen fall from the trees and knowing it’s going to leave me nearly bedridden with swollen eyes, unable to breath through my nose, and swollen lymph nodes so bad I can barely drink my water.

The djinn entry is the last one I’ve made so far, but I’m pretty happy with how everything is going. I’ll probably start to post progress as I go along, but I’m not guaranteed to have a specific schedule. I’m concerned about burning out, and I’m rewatching the show with my girlfriend, so I need to save some Supernatural brain-space for that as well. We just finished season 4 and she’s sad I won’t let us watch the start of season 5 yet, but it’s about my bedtime. I really can’t wait to see what people think of this little pet project. I’ve been so excited working on it, so passionate about pulling everything together, and I’m really happy to share it with the world.

For skinwalkers, I also tried to keep the original Navajo lore in mind.

I did the wendigo next, but I tried to stay closer to the original native lore. Something that bugs me a little is that the symbols they use in the show are from Africa, but I couldn’t find any Algonquian wards to use. Maybe I wasn’t looking in the right spot, but I ended up deferring to the symbols from John’s journal in episode 2 and a small marking of what they represent. Clearly, there’s no guarantee that it’s accurate, especially considering it’s from a different culture. This drawing is also referenced from Pinterest, but it was originally a drawing of the Rake.
It’s much closer to the original lore, whereas the modern-day interpretation of the wendigo is heavily influenced by Steven King’s Pet Sematary. I’m a huge fan of the design, but it’s irritating that people seem to take it as the definitive characterization for the wendigo when the Algonquian myths are also so cool.

Now, this is the entry on ghouls. I didn’t put them in the order they appear in the show—ghouls don’t show up until season 4. Instead, I’ve ordered each entry on an estimated commonality, so that the most common monsters for hunters to encounter are first.

For demons, I really wanted to give an example of what it means by ‘black eyes’. It’s a very specific portrayal in the show, and I wanted that to be clear. I used a reference from Pinterest, though I probably wouldn’t be able to go back and find it. The Devil’s Trap and anti-possession symbol were traced, but I had an empty space at the top, so I drew in a regular pentagram. It’s obviously not as neat as the other two.

This is the page for revenants. Now, I had to pick and choose between lores, so it’s not completely accurate to any one thing, either the show or real myth. None of these entries are, but it’s mostly just for fun anyways.

This is the page for vampires. Now, they don’t ever give an actual recipe for the cure in the show, but I did some digging and came up with a plausible option. Obviously, don’t try it at home. It’s probably going to get you hurt or killed if you actually drink something like this, and vampires aren’t real, so there would be no reason to.

For shapeshifters I really wanted to add some pictures, and I couldn’t get the thought of a little news article out of my head either, so I scrounged around and got these. The image of the skin is AI generated, which I know is a polarizing topic, but I really thought the slimy, uncanny effect would lend itself, and I couldn’t find a picture from the show that wasn’t too dark or grainy. The camera footage is obviously a screenshot from the show, and I did my best to write the little article myself. It’s not perfect, but I’m proud.

This is the entry for werewolves. I don’t think it matters to a lot of people, but I didn’t like how out-of-character my handwriting was for Sam, and it wasn’t something I could get over, so I found some example samples of Jared Padalecki’s handwriting and tried to emulate it. Made me realize he writes his letter b’s in a strange way.

This first entry is about ghosts. The class system is something I came up with on my own. It goes Undead, Cursed, Inhuman, or Nonhuman.
Undead means that this thing was once human and has since died, and turned into something else. Cursed is something that was human but has changed, without dying. Inhuman is something that resembles humans or seems human but isn’t. Nonhuman is the furthest end of the scale, something that has never been or seemed human at all.
It’s not a perfect system, but I think it works pretty well, so I’m happy with it for now.

I’ve started creating my own little hunter’s journal/encyclopedia inspired by Supernatural over the last few weeks, and decided I wanted to share it. It’s as if Sam started keeping his own journal after Jess’s death in episode one, and eventually I’ll add sticky notes with messages from Dean. This is the book itself, and I’ll create a different post for each monster’s entry.
