The Inequality in Public Schools
Well-off kids who don’t get a private education still have significant advantages over their peers.
Inequality is an invisible monster that is felt but not always seen by everyone. The education system in america is just one of those places that inequality exists. The fact is that education in the United States is segregated, by socio-economic status. An example would be the article above inequality in public schools. As Conley discussed the Equality of Condition some children may have been ascribed (born into) the middle or higher class, giving an automatic advantage for a successful education versus other children ascribed into a family who lack the finances having a large amount of debt, a job paying minimum wage, and no finances saved for their children’s education. These middle class children will be more fortunate with their future than, a child living in a low income area they will now not have the same education offered to them as those children coming from middle and higher income homes. The system is failing to provide equivalent educational opportunities to all children. There is a standard in america concerning the education children are receiving, and the determining factor, is which side of the track you come from.
Another significant aspect is the quality of the teachers education the children from low income homes. Teachers are paid less, and there is a large percent of turnaround; therefore, the quality of education that is offered is not the same as the education that children from higher income homes receive. A lack of teachers can cause an increase in the ration, causing 1 teacher to teach 30 plus students versus wealthy schools 15-20 students for 1 teacher. We must not allow our children to be subjected to this injustice with the technological advancement we presently have in this era in which we live in. We must not only acknowledge the problem, but be part of the solution to eradicate the war against inequality. The next generation depends on us to do the right thing. Stand up and be counted as one of the hero’s that made a difference.

'I Believe We Are On Verge Of Something Really Big': Oprah On #NeverAgai...
Social movement is a continuous, large-scale, organized, collective action, motivated by the desire to enact, stop, or reverse change in society (Jacobson, 2018). For example, “the year 1963 was when the streets of Birmingham, Alabama was flooded with African Americans fighting and protesting for their equal rights, initiated by MLK ( Jacobson, 2018)”. In today’s society movements are still being created with results of some succeeding and some failing.
Jonathan Christiansen, wrote an essay referring to the 4 stages of social movement, which are, emergence, Coalescence, Bureaucratization, and decline, who were originally identified by Herbert Blumber. #NeverAgain came from students who suffered a mass shooting on February 14th, 2018 in Parkman, Florida, at Stoneman Douglas High school where multiple students and staff members were found dead and injured. Leaving our society feeling heartbroken and unsafe from not only that particular shooting but from multiple tragic school shootings, throughout the U.S initiated the launch of year 2018. Parents afraid to send their children to school, along with students extremely afraid to step back into school after, either having experienced a school shooting in their school or the media broadcasting it live. The news traveled thru every media in the world, another mass shoot at a school. This would be and example of the starting of a social movement, the emergence began with no organization. With the students, staff and parents wanting to put a stop to the school shootings. They began to create a social movement.
They Coalescence (came together) to fight for what they wanted by creating and posting #NeverAgain on social media. Bureaucratization followed right after when celebrities donated to Douglas high to assist and maintain the organization also known as the movement. As Christiansen stated in his essay “decline does not necessarily mean failure for social movements” (Christiansen, 2018, p.3). Repression, co-optation, success, and failure are four ways a social movement may decline. Douglas High has maintained a strong positive stretch and is at its peak, the outcome is still to come. The movement #NeverAgain continues.

Hello welcome!
My name is Daisa, who would have thought I would be going back to school after so many years, but I took a leap of faith and said “here goes nothing”. I am a single mother of three beautiful girls. I furthered my education several years ago and am glad to say I am now a Licensed Practical Nurse. It was by far the hardest accomplishment yet, which is the reason I appreciate it so much more. However, I knew my journey was not quite over yet. With my daughter’s cheering me on, they have no idea how they tremendously inspired and challenged me to do better for our future.
As you begin to approach my posts, I focus on major important facts we continue to see and struggle with today, from socialization to culture. Along with interesting or disturbing situations I was not knowledgeable of, such as equality and inequality. I must say I am a very structured routine type of person, but this world we are living in today may throw some curveballs our way. So I believe it's very pertinent to stay updated with the world and the media. It’s especially important for parents raising children in it, and extremely easy to lose focus on what’s important. Have your paper and pencil on hand, it is catching information you might benefit from as well. Enjoy!!

As I stated before I am a single mother and I never truly realize just how much of an impact I have on my children. This class has taught me many things I can apply to everyday life. It has helped me to understand the roles people play in society and the role I play in my children's life. I definitely would suggest if you take this class, that you pay attention and listen to the topics at hand. I have gotten a greater understanding of social relationships and influences in society. The media impacts everyone's life in one way or another whether it be, the choices we construct, ideas we support, and our perceptions of others and ourselves. We as a society help to determine the paths of those who look up to and follow us. So for my children, It's imperative to instill in them different aspects of life, good decision making, and acceptance of oneself. They are our future and will carry on the characteristics they have observed for years, along with our legacy. They will determine where this world turns in the future years to come.

I do not believe It's necessary to do much convincing to take this class. For those of you who want detailed feedback, well i must start off by saying the experience was great! The knowledge I inherited will continue to walk this journey I call life as I apply it for an eternity. I will tell new potential students to prepare to see the world in a macro level. One outcome may have multiple reasons why it became that specific outcome. Did I give you a headache yet? This is a class that is unforgettable. It's also a class that may make you feel slightly bipolar, due to the emotional roller-coasters you will experience, but in the end it's all so satisfying. So rewarding for me that I will instill it in my daughter's tiny heads until they are able to make sense of how pertinent it will be for them to look at society with an open mind, and continue their lives making positive choices. Learning new things about yourself while sitting in a classroom is enlightening. I believe it's important for our society to learn how sociology began and how it is even more valuable to stay in tune with in it today. You can be that one person to change a life, a family, a state, or even the world. How can anyone make a difference, if they are lacking to educate themselves. Perhaps one day you begin to think like a Sociologist; How will it impact you, and what changes will you implement to Society? Don't tell me, take the class so you can answer that question yourself.

When people have children or adopt, do they ever think (“what if my baby grows up and he/she becomes gay or lesbian?). I'm assuming you are not able to get past those cute little feet and hands to think of such a thing. Well imagine, needing to make a very pertinent decision for your new baby, born with both a penis and a vagina, or a abnormality to the genitalia. Conley refers to David Reimer, also known as “John/Joan”. He was born a normal healthy baby boy. His parents decided to get him circumcised at 8 months old. What is normally a quick invasive procedure, I would say turned out to be his parents worst nightmare. Reimer “Suffered a botched circumcision that left him with virtually no penis (Conley, 2017)”. Leaving his parents with no other choice but to undergo reconstructive surgery to the genitals. Reimer was renamed to Brenda after surgery, and lived what was thought to be a normal childhood. Unfortunately Brenda felt different, she acquired knowledge of her sex when she was born. She later decided to reverse the reconstruction. This is probably how she felt more comfortable, which was her being a man. In 2004 he killed himself, he was only 38. Some doctors believe a phallus smaller than 2 cm long should be considered a automatic sex change, however the recommended size may change like everything else in the world. They believe the boys will grow up shameful and useless with a penis so small it will not be able to function during intercourse as the child matures into a man. Of course “It's easier to make a hole then to build a pole (Conley, 2017)”. In this case doctors believe size definitely matters.
Reimer is not the only child who has suffered with this dilemma. 1-2 out of 1,000 babies will have to face this situation according to Anne Fausto-Sterling’s estimation. Today the suicidal rates continues to increase. Despite the biological, psychological, and physical effects and changes, children who have undergone a sex change may suffer more from society. While deciding what gender best fits them, society (family, school, peers, and media) will always have their own input which may make it impenetrable for them to subside with the correct gender. The Social Construction of Sexuality (Conley, 2017) informs that, sociologist dispute referring to people have plumbing with potential but are uncertain of their own sexuality. These troubled children, adolescents, and adults, dealing with such dilemma may be able to relate.

What is RACE and what does it mean to you? Definition: “RACE- A group of people who share a set of characteristics-typically, but not always, physical ones- and are said to share a common bloodline (Conley, p. 324)”. Some people get race and ethnicity confused, assuming it means the same thing. Such as individuals filling out job applications. I am sure the questions do not ask you to describe your hair texture, or eye and skin color etc. Instead they might have options for race and options for ethnicity and instruct you to choose one or mark all that apply, almost always there is a small print stating optional. They might mark a box untruthfully, hoping the application make it to the right hands instead of the shredder box. In the 1960’s a law was pass for equal opportunity, however many years later society continues to battle with the same dilemma primarily discreetly. As the video above shows, minority women working the same job as Caucasian men, but earning less money. A black college graduate who worked just as hard, or possibly harder to earn the same career as a white man, continues to receive rejection letters from employers who hired several of his white classmates. A black high school graduate rejected from a college, is also known as institutional racism. All are thought to be just racism, but in fact their acts of discrimination.
Sociologist Robert Merton created “Merton’s Chart of Prejudice and Discrimination (Merton, 1949)”. He discovered most people fell under, prejudice but not discriminate. The difference is, and individual or society considered prejudice might have thoughts, feelings and a opinion of something they do not agree with. In contrast discrimination is, an individual or society acting on the thoughts, feeling, or opinions For example a new male employee getting a promotion when you have been employed longer. Decades later society continues to fight the evil battle that all boils down to race (skin color, appearance, etc.).

Social changes are inevitable. This is an unavoidable fact, but what is not settled is what form these changes will take and will they be big enough to effect change on a global level. In short, globalization can be defined as the worldwide diffusion of practices, expansions of relations across continents, organization of social life on global scale and growth of a shared global consciousness.
McDonaldization can be viewed as a globalization process. It is defined by its author George Ritzer as, “the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world”. The main concepts that frame the theory of McDonaldization are: efficiency, predictability, calculability, substitution of nonhuman technology, and control. Let us quickly define each of these dimensions of McDonaldization:
Efficiency – The rational determination of the best mode of production. Individuality is not allowed.
Predictability – The production process is organized to guarantee uniformity of product and standardized outcomes. This also ensures a consumer can expect the same product regardless of the location where the product is consumed.
Calculability – Assessment of outcomes is based on quantifiable criteria rather than quality. Purchasing less expensive pieces from different countries that are required to construct and item (cell phones, cars, etc).
Substitution of nonhuman technology – No matter how well trained and efficient a person is, they are still capable of variability of thought. To remove this variability, replacing human workers through technology is preferable whenever possible.
Control – This dimension is closely linked to the replacement of human by nonhuman technology. The more control an organization has over the process of creating product, the more efficient and predictable the process is.
So, what does this have to do with society and globalization? Ritzer believes that the process of the restaurant chain to produce the same hamburger the same way at any of its restaurants anywhere in the world is becoming more common in all parts of society all over the world. More emphasis is being placed on efficiency, predictability, calculability, replacement of human by nonhuman technology, and control over uncertainty. This emphasis is prompting societies to slowly change and succumb to these processes that lend them to be controlled even without their knowledge. Increasing the annual income for ownerships, in contrast costing employees/society their jobs.

People commit crimes everyday all over the world. The type of crime will determine the specific type of punishment and repercussions the person will endure. Deviance is another form of crime also known as Social deviance “any transgression of socially established norms (Conley, 2017).” Children commit deviant acts very often, whether intentional or unintentional. Farting in quiet place, and picking your nose in public are all acts of informal deviance behavior. As shown in the video above, children having obnoxious behavior, what sociology refer to as informal deviant. While other people might get angry with the ignorant action, they are not able to call the police reporting a crime. In contrast, theft, robbery, and murder are acts of crimes also known as, formal deviant behavior.
Abiding by society’s rules is what we are taught as children, known as Social control. We are taught right from wrong, for example in order to leave out the store with those chips you must pay first, or you may get arrested for theft. Also respecting others personal space, not talking in a quiet ceremony, these act are known as society norms as well. However that could also be a cultural norm, some cultures are known to be affectionate, might touch your back or hand when speaking to you, while others are very to them selves.
As discussed in class. “Robert Merton refers to strain theory as conformist- Did everything right Has a career, makes good money, and is not afraid to express it. Ritualist- Refuses to go to college, however manage to excel other ways legal ways. Innovator- agree with the means but lack the goals, becoming a drug dealer or prostitution to make money. Retreatist- refused it all, stop participating in society. Rebel- We might define as a terrorist (Jacobson)”.

Robert Merton’s Theory suggest social interactions play a part in the roles we take on as adults. We all assume a certain role whether it be as a parent, student, entrepreneur, or even all of the above. Today’s society is a fast paced world that is constantly changing. We must stay up to date with technology, education, new inventions and discoveries, and even updated health recommendations. Managing all of these tasks is a perfect example of a role strain. As defined in the text a role strain is “ the incompatibility among roles corresponding to a single status.” (Conley, p.133) We sometimes struggle to find a balance in our everyday lives with work, children, and personal goals. We enter into role conflict when trying to be a superhuman that maintains family, relationships, and job duties and demands. Such as a single mother raising children, working, maintaining a house, and possibly trying to advance her career. Which may be an example of an involuntary status also known as an ascribed status. That single mother might not have been raised by a wealthy traditional family, causing her to pursue her career on her own as an adult instead of right out of high school without children or other demanding responsibilities. However, that does not stop her achieved status or what she will become also known as a voluntary status. Merton’s theory concluded with a master status, a strain overpowering all other strains. You may be currently concurring, like having a disability, not having an automobile, even being a mother. Most women believe their role as a mother overrides, school, work etc. What would your off springs experience?

Conley stated “Culture is a vague term that we use to rationalize many behaviors and describe all sorts of peoples and patterns” (Conley, 2017). Due to the lack of knowledge some people fail to inherit, culture symbolizes so many different commodity about oneself. Most people view the term culture as their cultural background, “values, beliefs, behaviors, and social norms” (Conley,2017), sociology refer to Nonmaterial culture. Different ethnicity have different cultural norms, If one is Puerto Rican they are raised, eating yellow rice, and beans, primary language Spanish, little girls are taught to maintain and care for the home by cooking, and cleaning, little boy are taught work ethic to provide for the family, and all other cultural norms for that specific culture.
According to Sociologist Thorstein Veblen Conspicuous Consumption is “The term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to display wealth and income rather than to cover the real needs of the consumer” (Veblen, 2018). Which also falls under the term culture. Society believes exposing your wealth by having the most expensive cars, and the best designer clothing etc, will grant ones the respect they are demanding. We are constantly attempting to stay connected with what we may see on television and media. To stay up to date with the new trend assuming that is the appearance we should maintain. Purchasing items one may not be able to afford. If an individual is not a celebrity, they may not be able to live like one either. Another term discussed in class, commodity fetishism “consumers perceive each others value based upon how much goods they are exchanging/consuming (Jacobson, 2018)”.
Conspicuous compassion, refers to “the deliberate use of charitable donations of money is order to enhance the social prestige of the donor (Jacobson, 2018)”. Last but not least “The ostentatious consumption of goods that in meant to provoke the envy of others” (Jacobson, 2018) is known as Invidious consumption.

There is little doubt that the patriarchy is widely powerful in most of the world. That does not mean that all men are evil and that all women are total powerless or totally deprived of rights, influence, and resources. Patriarchy is institutionalized male power and under that power, a woman experiences her female body as a desirable object, a theory Jean Kilbourne argues, also known as the creator of killing me softly. Another person with strong opinions of media degrading women, philosopher Martha Nussbaum, mentions, instrumentality, denial of autonomy, ownership, fungibility, violability, and denial of subjectivity, all emphasizing how women are treated, used, and de-humanized as women (Jacobson, 2018).
Communication technology has definitely played a major part in advancing the interconnectedness of the world and this is nowhere more apparent than in the media. This also brings into the question the portrayal of women in media. Most media organizations are owned and operated by males with very few females in decision making positions. This means the portrayal of women in media reflects how men want to see them. This also contributes to the news stories that are covered and how the images of women in those stories are used. This may explain why most news stations employee beautiful women as their weather reporter. One only must watch a weather report on a Spanish news program to understand the level of objectification, or self-objectification, these women endure. Too often, these women appear to be dressed more appropriately for a night out in the town, instead of the proper professional apparel for the position.
Continuing on with Kilbourne’s (killing me softly) argument as others might of heard the phrase sex sells. Marketing and advertising should be the proper wording, however when you see a women posted on a huge billboard as your entering a big popular city such as NYC, advertising a bow tie with nothing on but that bow tie, the phrase sex sells fits perfect . A Victoria Secret commercial previewing there new spring line comes to mind, but others are just obvious objectification’s. Tell me, exactly what does a beautiful, half-naked women have to do with selling car parts?

Parents raising children now, i am sure never imagined they had to compete with electronics. Before an infant is able to grasp an object they have already been introduced to some sort of electronic. So our plans for raising our own children the way we were raised is no longer 100% correct. As an adult having children of my own, I have heard multiple times there is not a hand book on parenting. Some might agree while others may disagree.
Craig Calhoun defined Socialization in the, Dictionary of the Social Sciences, as, “the process through which individuals internalize the values, beliefs, and norms of a society and learn to function as its members” (2002, p.47). The interactions you receive from your parents from the moment you took your first breath, and also the interactions you will encounter with the real world will mold you into what you become in the future. The primary source would be your family. Parents distinguish the child’s sex by what color clothing you have on. Everyday norms are instilled in your day to day life like using the potty, being respectful to others, learning right from wrong etc. Little ones are like sponges, they absorb all they see and hear. As they grow older they continue to inherit more from family, schools, peers, and of course the media.
Parents may show their child what they believe is the right way. When they see their little girl talking to their own baby doll the same way her mommy talked to her, pushing the stroller on the grass up and down the back yard while humming so her baby doll fall’s asleep the way her mommy would do to her when she would cry, those mimics are known as Anticipatory Socialization “learning about expectations associated with statuses we enter into”(Jacobson, 2018).
Some parents are raising their children with high expectations, sending them to the best schools so they are given the best education. This makes them able to attend the top colleges, and have a successful future. Their are some people who do not do well with re-socialization, and are unable to change their ways when their environment changes. This may result in an unsuccessful outcome for your planned future. In reality we are not able to control what path our children take. We may only set them up for success and hope they grasp it, continue to prosper and grow as they head to their future endeavor.
