Hello dizzyfizzypop!
Good to have you, good to have you :)
Your obscure dinosaur issssss
Sinornithosaurus [S. millenii] Dinosauria > Saurischian > Theropoda > Tetanurae > Coelurosauria > Maniraptoriforms > Maniraptors > Deinonychosauria > Dromaeosauridae > Microraptoria > Sinornithosaurus
Timeline: Early Cretaceous Period ~124.5-122 mya
Location: China [Yixian Formation, Dawangzhangzi beds]
Tumblr media
from BBC
Interesting fact: there was been some debate whether or not Sinornithosaurus was venomous. It would be the first identifies dinosaur to be venomous if it were.

Bonjour changcy5555!
Welcome :) Enjoy the dinosaurs :D
Your obscure dinosaur issssss
Oryctodromeus [O. cubicularis] Dinosauria > Ornithischian > Cerapoda > Ornithopoda > Hypsilophodontidae > Oryctodromeus
Timeline: Mid Cretaceous Period 95 mya
Location: Western N. America [Montana, Wayan Formation of Idaho]
Tumblr media
from wikicommons
Interesting fact: Discovered in 2007, it was the first fossils to prove some dinosaurs lived in burrows

Hallo meet-doctor-foo!
Enjoy all the dinosaur knowledge :D
Your obscure dinosaur iiiissssssss
Kentrosaurus [K. aethiopicus] Dinosauria > Ornithischian > Thyreophora > Stegosauridae > Stegosaurinae > Kentrosaurus
Timeline: Late Jurassic Period 156-150 mya
Location: Tendaguru, Tanzania, Africa
Tumblr media

Interesting fact: I usually pick my obscure dinos specifically for some interesting fact about them. But I just like spikes! But I guess: The spikes on their shoulders were not attached to their bones, making it a mystery as to how they were positioned. The tails spikes also differ in the some point straight up [the ones in the middle] and the ones closer to the front were hooked forward [as opposed to facing all backwards like other stegosaurs]

Welcome silverbaryonyx!
hope you enjoy :)
I was going to be uncreative and give you baryonyx as your obscure dinosaur, but then I thought better of it :P
So now your obscure dinosaur iiissssss
Thecodontosaurus [T. antiquus] Dinosauria > Saurischian > Sauropodomorphs > Thecodontosauridae
Timeline: Late Triassic Period 223-209 mya
Location: Wales and Western England
Tumblr media
Interesting Fact: It was one of the first dinosaurs to be discovered in 1843. It is also one of the earliest known dinosaurs and one of the first sauropods [think long neck dinosaurs]

Sup, scalarationis?
Welcome welcome, hope you enjoy!
Your obscure dinosaur iiiiissss
Deinonychus [Deinonychus antirrhopus] Dinosauria > Saurischian > Theropods > Tetanurans > Coelurosauria > Maniraptoria > Deinonychosauria > Dromaeosaurid > Velociraptorinae > Deinonychus
[Can you tell my favourite part is classification?]
Timeline: Mid Cretaceous Period 110-100 mya
Location: Western N. America [Montana, Utah, Wyoming]
Tumblr media
Interesting Fact: The velociraptors in Jurassic Park were actually based on these dinosaurs, rather than their smaller velociraptor relatives

Hey excelsiroar!
Welcome :D
Your obscure dinosaur is
Nyasasaurus [Nyasasaurus parringtoni] The classification is hard to pinpoint, and it may not be a dinosaur at all, but rather a very close relative. However, it is likely to be a theropod or an ornithischian of some sort
Timeline:  Early Triassic 243 mya
Location: Tanzania's Manda Beds, Africa
Tumblr media
Interesting Fact: It is thought to be the earliest known dinosaur, appearing 10-15 million years before the previously known earliest dinosaur. However, because there is very little fossil evidence, it's hard to know for sure whether it really is a dinosaur at all.

Hello thanagar-thrasher!
Good to have you!
Your obscure dinosaur issss *drum roll*
Therizinosaurus [T. cheloniformis] Dinosauria > Saurischian > Theropods > Tetanura > Coelurosauria > Therizinosauridae
[I'm hoping that all those terms will be familiar later, as I expand this blog!]
Timeline: Late Cretaceous Period 85-70 mya
Location: Mongolia, Asia
Tumblr media
Interesting fact: unlike most theropods [think the scary, carnivorous ones], Therizinosaurus was probably a herbivore and at most an insectivore
Glad to have you! :D Hope you enjoy all the dino-info!

Introduction to Classification
Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata [hollow spinal/nerve cord with brain] Class: Archosauria [which include, but is not limited to, crocodilians, pterosaurs, dinosaurs, and birds] Subclass: Ornithodira [dinosaurs and pterosaurs] Suporder: DINOSAURIA
From here, Dinosaurs are put into two orders based on hip structure. [And then these are later broken down into more subcategories which we shall look closer at in later posts]
The first are the Saurischians.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These included both herbivores and carnivores and are the oldest known dinosaurs. They appeared in the Triassic period.
MEMORABLE DINOSAURS
Tyrannosaurus Rex Velociraptor Brachiosaurus
The second are the Ornithischians.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These were only herbivores and did not appear until the Jurassic period.
MEMORABLE DINOSAURS Stegosaurus Triceratop Ankylosaur
THINGS WE LEARNT Dinosaurs evolved from Archosaurs in the Triassic period. They evolved into two orders based on hip structure. The older Saurischians, which were either carnivores or herbivores, and the Ornithischians, which were all herbivores.

Dinosaur Timeline
Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic Era, which started 250 million years ago and lasted nearly 180 million years.
Tumblr media
Triassic Period: 250-208 million years ago
Hot, dry climate
First dinosaurs appeared
Jurassic Period: 208-144 million years ago
Increased rainfall, humid, lush forests
Dinosaurs [and pterosaurs] flourished. Largest dinosaurs appeared. Birds also appeared and small mammals were present.
Cretaceous Period: 144-65 million years ago
Climate grew cooler.
Flowering plants appeared. Some dinosaurs [such as sauropods and stegosaurs] decreased in numbers as advanced ornithopods and ceratopsians took over.
MASS EXTINCTION!!! bye bye dinosaurs :<
Aaaannnnddd that's the boring part done! Yey!

Oh hai!
Obligatory introduction post! I'm Lysander. I like dinosaurs. I am by no means an expert and everything I post I'm learning as I go! But we can learn together, ne? I hope that this will become a learning tool as well as something fun! And the ask is always open!
Disclaimer: I'm using a number of online sources as well as books that I own or am going to borrow from the library. Currently I only have: Smithsonian Handbooks: Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life by Hazel Richardson which I picked up at the Royal Ontario Museum URLs include: http://www.gavinrymill.com/dinosaurs/index.html http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/diapsids/dinosaur.html http://palaeo.gly.bris.ac.uk/communication/boulton/Boulton.html http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/
