call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
#i grew up playing rugby#and even in middle school there were discussions of trans people in the sport#because lesbians tend to play rugb#and lesbians also tend to be trans#so i've played with and against many a trans man#and i've also played with and against cis men#and the biggest difference between “men's” and “women's” rugby is honestly sportmenship#the men's team took a sick glee out of hurting and condescending me/my teammates#regardless of the fact i had more experience and better skills#and the male coaches are the only ones who ever kicked up a fuss about having trans players#even though he was a trans man and wouldn't have been allowed on the men's team (and wouldn't have been safe to be on the men's team)#transphobia is a consequence of misogyny/hate for women and racism#they don't want to “protect” women#they want to protect their identity as “men” because the identity itself is *the* most fragile of all

#this is the push and pull of the internet#the internet — particularly my time spent in fandom and political spaces — shaped me in ways i believe to be a net good#but the internet of 15 years ago is not what it is today#and were i a 6th grader today trying to find diverse community#i do not believe it would be the benefit to me it was way back then#i attribute a significant portion of this to the internets availability and its relationship with the physical world#before the internet was a way to expand a physical community beyond geographical confines#and the nature of community is that there are often people with whom you disagree or even dislike#but the nature of the internet is that it's inherently easier to police because of the power of the backspace#which for various reasons leads to cancel culture — a form of punitive justice — and morality wars#and as digital communities begin to replace the physical#particularly after covid#there is too the breakdown of social interaction#yadda yadda yadda

being so staunchly anti generative ai while everyone around you is "i used chatgpt" and "i asked grok" and google search is useless and every company is implementing ai and every single celeb is taking ai money and partnering with ai is like... it's so jarring. why can't you see the harm like i can? why are you so lazy? why are we making society this stupid? can we please stop? it's killing people does that not matter to you?

Growing up, my brother and I deeply dreaded going shoe shopping. It took hours, especially if it was for winter boots. My dad would examine the stitching, the brand reliability, the temperature recommendations, every piece of information he could get his hands on, and then when he'd finally found the right brand, it was on to making absolutely dead sure they fit properly - he had a particular way of poking the toe of the boot to ensure our foot was where it was supposed to be that always drove me nuts. This was always on a weekend, and it was about the worst punishment we could imagine.
Years later, I found out that he'd spent his entire childhood on the Canadian prairies with cold feet. My grandmother just bought whatever boots looked like the best value, regardless of whether they'd keep anyone warm. They'd kept him from frostbite, probably, but never, ever comfortable.
The reason my grandmother never had a thought about this was because she was buying her kids real boots. There was a sort of magical quality about real, purpose-made boots that meant that of course they'd work, because when she was growing up on the Canadian prairies, they had the kind of no money that meant you just stuffed some newspaper into your shoes and soldiered on.
The last pair of winter boots my dad bought for me was 15 years ago, in preparation for a three-month stint living in northern Quebec in midwinter. They cost $200 then, or something like it. I've worn them every year since, driving out to the remotest locations on the Canadian prairies and never once thinking about my feet.
When I read the Vimes Boots Theory for the first time, it rang a bell that reverberated back three generations.

lmfao why do i have a bunch of weirdos accusing me of being a war crimes apologist rn
#housing is a human right that we cannot revoke based on morals#all people regardless of “good” or “bad” are deserving of housing by virtue of being alive#not to mention that the u.s. military preys on the most vulnerable populations because it *is* the best vehicle of class mobility#yet veterans are neglected the moment they're discharged because they're no longer a cog in the imperialist machine
