I’m a big Tommy Lasorda guy (when it comes to baseball). This is his Hall of Fame speech from 1997, and its my favorite induction speech. He loves giving speeches, so of course its pretty good, albeit nothing any baseball fan hasn’t heard him say many times before.

土手に当てて弾くと、地面に落ちそうになるボールにもう一度飛びついたが、打球をグラブに収めることは出来ず、結果的にグラウンドにうつぶせになってしまたイチローは、思わず左腕で顔を隠している。 このプレーに関しては、二塁手のロビンソン・カノの動きに気をとられたようで、「お客さんの声があったんで、（こっちの声が）聞こえてないんじゃないかという意識があった」と話したが、リズムの悪さを最後まで引きずり、最後の守備でも、太陽が目に入ったりするのではないか、という恐れを抱きながら守って いたそうである。 「流れ的にそう言うこと（太陽が目に入る）が起こりうる可能性が高い。僕にとってそう言う日だった」 よってゲームセットの瞬間は胸をなで下ろした。 「あの回で終わってよかったなぁ」 本当にホッとした感じだった。 ところでその試合終了の瞬間、イチローは、ライトスタンドを振り返っている。今季は、これがシアトルでの最後の試合。何らかの意図があったはずだが、そのことを問われるとイチローは言った。 「そんなこと説明するのって、野暮じゃないですか」 言わなくてもファンは分かってくれる。そんな思いがその言葉には滲んでいた。
