I think Echo’s hatred for Maria will grow and grow until she breaks down and decides to become an antithesis to Maria just to not be compared by her out of spite.

She cuts down her hair, dyes her hair black and starts to wear a mask to hide her face so that people stop saying how much she looks like Maria (she still looks like her no matter how she tries to hide it).

Everyone tells her that Maria was filled with love and kindness for everyone? She’s going to be filled with hatred for everyone and everything (including herself).

Maria loved Earth? She’s going to destroy the planet that she hates so much by siding with Eggman and help him create more weapons of mass destruction (even if she knows it’s wrong and she hates what he’s doing).

Shadow keeps telling her to stop? She’s going to stop only when he is dead (no matter how much she feels that she’s hurting him more than she’s hurting herself by doing this).

In the end it works: people stop thinking of her as a clone of Maria and instead call her Echo, Eggman’s apprentice and Shadow’s arch-enemy. But this victory is hollow and she hates how alone she is, because she pushed everyone that cared about her away and her “cousin” only uses her for her intelligence.

She wishes for someone to save her, but no one will.

Or so she thinks.

ANON YOU SEE MY VISION, YOU SEE MY VISION SO WELL. I have this unpublished doodle of Echo impulsively cutting one of her braids off and trying to dye her head black and red, and getting scolded for it---->Shadow means well, and doesn't knowingly projecting his trauma on Echo, but he's still pretty much in the process of grieving, and as unhealthy as that may be, he's scared at the idea of the only thing left in the world that looks like his sister changing her physical aspect so suddenly.

Echo turning to "evil" would also be extremely in-character for her, because she's very different from Maria's sweet and caring personality. The constant comparison makes her tired, snappy, sarcastic, and prone to acting out badly to draw some attention to herself. She's also bitter about Maria in general, because she knows she's way more well-liked by everyone, despite being dead, because she inherited her illness, because she can't connect with her brother figure (Shadow) because he only sees her as Maria 2.0, and so on.

In all seriousness, yes! It's absolutely based off of cartoons like Gravity Falls, TOH, Amphibia, and so on. It's a subversion of the "Young Teen Ends Up in a Magical World" trope (which is my favorite trope ever), only that the Young Teen that serves as protagonist does NOT want to be in the magical world. At all. And also she's kind of an ass/aff.
