May 2020 Update
Man, its really hard beating stuff when you have a baby! This week I managed to beat a couple really good ones tho, so get ready!
Jill of the Jungle
Tumblr media
Ok so this one is kind of special. Way back in the early 90s, I only had 3 games; Cosmic Adventure, Monster Mash, and the shareware version of Jill of the Jungle. I beat the first (of three) episodes a million times, and always wondered what the others looked like. Thats why when I saw this for free on GOG.com, I knew I finally had to figure it out. The verdict? eeeeeeeh...
See, Jill runs into a problem thats pretty common amongst shareware games; The first (free) episode is almost always frontloaded with the good stuff. The other episodes look pretty much like the first one, and all the good level ideas are used by episode 2. The last ones were just mazes, and unfair puzzles where they change the rules without telling you.
The big question, tho, is did I enjoy it? Yeah, I enjoyed a nice nostalgia trip through this game again, and it felt like I was completing a journey finally, seeing what the rest was all about. But, with lots of slowdown, kind of ugly and basic artwork (Even for an early 90′s DOS game), and really stiff controls, it was only 3 hours long total, so its a cool nostalgia romp if anything. 6/10
Gato Roboto
Tumblr media
Here was a super cute little indie Metroidvania for the switch! Again, quite short, but I’m ok with that (what with a 10 month old baby and all). The story is that a guy crash lands on a planet, is trapped in his ship, and only his cat, kiki, can get out. Using his spare space suit, and armed with missiles and a laser cannon, kiki must explore and collect power ups, defeat bosses, and uncover the mystery in the lab beneath the surface. It sounds pretty generic, but there was a really cool twist at the end, and I was satisfied.
This is a really fun game, and very much in the metroid spirit. You get a lot of metroid-esque power ups, and finding tapes that change how your game looks is a lot of fun, and its also satisfying to find the regular health powerups and others. My only real problem is that the laser cannon is reeeeally weak, and almost useless, and you find yourself using the missiles a lot. This wouldn’t be a problem if the missiles also didn’t push you back, and after you shoot 2 theres a short cooldown period. The game makes up for it by being SUPER CUTE, both in the graphics and how the commander talks to the cat (Named kiki by the way. Awwwww).
Super fun and highly recommended! 9/10

April 2020 update!
Oh hey, I finally beat something again! And this time it actually felt like a full game! That game is....
Full Throttle: Remastered
So I went into this one not really knowing anything about it other than it was from what a lot of people consider the golden era of Lucas Arts point-and-click games. After beating it, I’m pretty sure the reason I never heard of it was because it was pretty meh.
First off, I immediately turned off the updated graphics, because wow that does not look good. Everything is all smeary, theres really no edges to anything, and I just felt like the original pixel art looked a lot better.
And then theres the story. It seems to just be like “I like ride bike. Bad men want stop ride bike. Stop bad men.” Never really seemed to go much deeper. There is a small sub plot about a daughter of the chairman that no one knew existed, but the reveal happens and everyone kind of just takes her at her word, and never questions it. I feel like the story could have taken that a little farther. And what happened to the reporter? I really liked that character. But shes there right in the beginning, vanishes, and then all you hear is when other characters mention her briefly. Some of the writing was pretty good, don’t get me wrong, and most of the jokes hit, but some major problems as well.
Gameplay was interesting. Some clunky bits like the bike combat, but I’m going to be a little more fair on that seeing as it was 1996 and that kind of thing on the PC was still fairly new. A lot of the puzzles were really vague, and for games like Grim Fandango, its not as bad because the world was so charming, but in this one, I don’t really care about the main character. Lots of little pixel hunts for things, and a lot of the time it wasn’t clear that, for example, a cupboard was a cupboard (Thank you trailer, for taking up a half hour looking for that drawer in the back. I’m so happy that I used my time in that way)
In conclusion; Not one I recommend, but if you really need to play the whole Lucas Arts 90′s point-and-click catalogue, then it won’t hurt too bad. Just maybe use a guide for the less obvious stuff. 5/10

April Update!
Well, we’re into april now, and I already have some progress to show! Its not much, but I’m going to count it as my April game anyways.
Squidlit
Tumblr media
I saw this game for 50c on the eshop, and it looked cute enough, so I thought I would give it a try. And yup, sure was worth 50c, and not a penny more. The style is really well done, and cute...for all of 10 minutes, until you remember why games tend not to look like this anymore. And everyone speaks in Meme-speak, which gets very annoying, very quickly. And that 10 minutes it takes to get over the graphic style? Thats a third of the game by the way. It just kind of ends too, no real conclusion, the big bad doesn’t even really get vanquished, he just kind of throws you out and yay you win. Worth what I paid for it, but can’t recommend. 2/10
Thats my progress so far in April, but I also downloaded a game called Gato Roboto that looks interesting, I’ve gotten about a third of the way through full throttle remastered, and I’m working on the platinum for FF7. Stay tuned for more updates, and my thoughts on those games! (I have a LOT to say about FF7. Look forward to it!)

March Catch-up
So I decided to make this blog after seeing someone elses that they were doing for pretty much the same thing (Thanks Baby Bahamut). Seeing as this is march now, I have lots of catching up to do. So, here’s what I’ve beaten so far;
January:
Mutant Mudds (3DS): This was a game that I’d picked up sometime in 2012, and then kind of forgot about. I think its been sitting on my 3DS ever since, and I’ve kept meaning to get back to it. This was its year I guess, and I decided to finally beat it to start the year. I started a new game aaaaaand...instantly remembered why I never beat it.
It just feels like so much nothing. The graphics are pretty meh, story might as well not exist, and the action isn’t really that fun, more frustrating. Especially near the end of the game, the controls really aren’t tight enough to support what it wants to do. Beat it and instantly deleted it. 3/10
West of Loathing (Switch): This was a real surprise. When I read that it was from the same guys who did Kingdom of Loathing, I thought it might be ok, but it could also just be try-hard random. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the humour was actually really clever, and the combat, while super basic, was pretty fun! I also couldn’t stop exploring and clicking on every little thing to see what it did. If I had any problems, it was that the ending was a little too abrupt, and that the combat difficulty tended to be all over the place at times. Great game, and I will definitely be playing the DLC at some point. 8/10
February:
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (GBA): Well, technically I played in on my 3DS, but its a GBA game so I’ll let it be. Anyways, what a fantastic little pocket zelda game! The world was pretty compact, but thanks to the kinstones I was always exploring, and the graphics, while being super cute, also kept things clear and easy to read. It’s pretty hard to know where to go, but with a ton of exploration even I managed to find my way to the next dungeon.
The equipment you find was super fun too; I didn’t realize that they had managed to get things like the deku leaf in a 2D zelda, and had lots of fun with it. Backtracking with them was great too, as re-exploring old areas always felt fresh. Definitely a must play if you haven’t already. 9/10
Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening (GBC): I already beat the original way back in the late 90′s, but I figured that the GBC version was different enough to call it a seperate game.
So this one definitely scratched a nostalgia itch, but it was kind of a mistake playing it after a more modern one. The items felt a little more basic, the movement a little more stilted. Still a great game, but definitely aged just a bit. And the colour dungeon was really basic, didn’t feel like much of a challenge. Again, still worth playing, but without the nostalgia glasses, its aged. 7/10
March:
Sonic Forces (PS4): So I know that this is a “bad” sonic game according to the mainstream, and I can totally see why (homing attacks barely work, kind of a dumb story, etc etc) but for some weird reason I actually kind of enjoyed the levels...so much so that I think I’ll go for that crazy grindy platinum! (Tho whoever thought of a trophy for getting 100,000 rings, I will find you and punch you). Theres just something fun about the missions, and again some of the levels I really enjoy. And the avatar dress-up (despite sounding dumb at first) is actually pretty great once you unlock a bunch of the clothing options.
A solid 6/10
Pokemon Shield (Switch):  Okaaay, so this one is controversial. Maybe its just me being a pokemon fanboy, but I still really liked this entry. Sure it was really easy (mostly), but the things I love about the pokemon franchise were still here. Sure most of the monsters aren’t, but they are coming, and since I’m more interested in the competitive meta than the story, its kind of refreshing.
See, in past gens, the same pokemon have been on top forever (for the most part), and then you have the same pokemon that deal with them well, and before you know it, all the competitive tiers (shoutout to smogon) look the same as the past gen, and I’m already bored. Here, its a chance to remake them fresh, and I’ve been loving it. As well, they’ve made it WAY easier to train up competitive pokemon. I already have a team ready to go, and it didn’t take me a whole month to do it!
All in all, very happy with this entry, and can’t wait to see whats in the expansions. 8/10
APE OUT (PC): Guess this is the arbitrary “Arty” entry eh? So basically you are an ape that is breaking out of various places, and you attack by grabbing and throwing people at walls or each other. When you do, they die in a really satisfying explosion of blood. The really cool part of the whole thing is that its all set to a drum solo that encompasses the sound effects and everything. When you just start a level, its really quiet, but as the carnage starts, the beat picks up organically and you can really get into it! And the art style is so clean and simple, yet very artistic. Just a neat game all around!
After reading this, it sounds great, right? Well, there are a couple things that actually made this one kind of hard to finish. See, the game is super satisfying, until you’ve died a million times from something you had no control over; A couple examples are getting sniped from way off screen, or RNG making 6 super tough enemies appear in a room you just ran into, meaning instadeath. Also, the graphics are really cool, but some effects make it super hard to see what was going on, 5/10
What’s Next?
Right now, I’m just working on the platinum for Sonic, but next month I think I feel like playing the Full Throttle remake. Once I’ve beaten something, Ill be sure to make a post about it! Thanks for reading!

Welcome!
This blog is going to be used to jot down some thoughts on what I’ve beaten so far this year, maybe a couple reviews, and what I’m working on next. Basically, in 2017, I saw how many games I had just lying around not being played, and how many classics I still wanted to beat, and decided to give myself some structure so I could finally revisit them. The rules I gave myself were as follows;
- Beat at least one game a month
- At least a couple should be retro games (I have a large collection...)
Pretty basic, but its been working well, as its 3 months into 2020 and I’m still going strong. Part of the fun also is to try and break my record for games beaten in a year! (Currently stands at 24).
About me:
I am a 29 year old Canadian man, who works in IT. I have a beautiful wife and a new baby who takes up a lot of time, so posts can get scarce once in a while. Whoops in advance.
I hope you enjoy reading my blog!
