Really you wanna be.... Here’s how to really quit your 9–5 job if that is your goal. ■Start with an interest. I was on a call last week with someone who kept saying “divine purpose.” It sounded like a phrase from a religious cult. I felt all spiritual like I wanted to get on my knees and pray while simultaneously chanting Hallelujah. Purpose is too grandiose. If you want to quit your 9–5, then you’ve gotta go small. Replace the mythical word of purpose with interest. What are you interested in? Some people are not sure. An easy way to find out is to write down everything you did this week. Where was the bulk of the time spent? There’s your hint. What do you get pissed off at when you miss it or can’t do it? If I said you can’t go for a run today would you get angry? My former boss would. He would chase you down the street with a pitchfork if you told him he couldn’t go for a run in the woods, or as he calls it a “forest bath.” ■Content creation is the seed. Once you know your interest, then you need content creation. Content creation is part of any side hustle. ■Remove your filter and say what you think. One negative side of a 9–5 job is that we’re taught to filter what we say. Because telling the truth in the corporate world can get you in trouble or cause you to lose your job. ■Find a way to be helpful. ■Find a way to make $20. ■Learn how to treat people. ■Become obsessed with the phrase “revenue share.” ■Work towards the tipping point. It’s a great way to engage with other brands and people. Plus, we all want to know where you got those super cute shoes and we don’t really want to ask. There are two types of tagging to be aware of – tagging accounts in the actual photo versus tagging accounts in the caption. There are pros to both. Tagging in the caption displays the account name without people having to click to show tags, giving immediate exposure. However, tagging the account in the photo adds it to their profile’s tagged photo section, allowing people who follow them to see it even if they don’t follow you. It also makes it more likely the account you’re tagging will see the photo even if they’re not logged into their Instagram at that moment. Let's know hou to hustle......[Musk's routine] Musk wakes up around 7AM. Sometimes, he has breakfast, but most times he does not have time for that. At 10AM, he makes morning calls to journalists, job candidates, and conference calls regarding Tesla and SpaceX (he is at SpaceX on Mondays and Thursdays, at Tesla on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and both on Fridays) Let’s assume he is at SpaceX today. After the morning calls, around 10.45AM, he has a meeting with his engineering team to make the weekly review of vehicle and launch operations. 12.30PM, he will have more meetings; perhaps some propulsion meeting to move things forward. Lunch time is around 1–2PM. Here, Musk uses batching (combining tasks) to stay productive, for an example by answering mails while eating, or having a lunch meeting. He is basically trying to bring the work to him. Then, he gets back to SpaceX for his daily walk (when he is at SpaceX) around the factory. Here, he also stops by SpaceX’s engineering group. Around 7PM, he will give interviews to journalists or participating in other types of events. He gets back home, and at 1AM, Musk initiates his 6 hours of sleep. Musk’s schedule consists of 5 minute slots to stay productive. So, there are several other daily happenings, which I haven’t covered, e.g. his daily workout routines. So to answer the question, it seems like the variety of daily tasks keeps him motivated and prevents boredom. Simultaneously, a very tight planning enables him to effectively carry out all of his daily tasks.
