And now LI is turning toxic... I don't think LI realizes that permitting it to turn political is going to kill the brand...

I can't see HOW this will survive. They have literally defined "addictive" as: The bill would define “addictive feed” as an internet website, online service, online application, or mobile application, in which multiple pieces of media generated or shared by users are recommended, selected, or prioritized for display to a user based on information provided by the user, or otherwise associated with the user or the user’s device, as specified, unless any of certain conditions are met.
Using that language, both your email, and Amazon.com would be an "addictive" service. Kindle and Audible would be addictive services under said bill!

I am not easily--LOOK!!! A SQUIRREL!!!
#6-3
Tumblr media
GOTCHA!!! All kidding aside:
a. How distracted are you? I am not.
b. Do you find your attention span waning? No. But I don’t get many texts or calls. I drop the phone off in the charger by the door when I get home, and am happy if I don’t need to touch it until I leave the next day. I don’t do TikTok, or much other social media. The only Social Media I spend large amounts of time is YouTube, but what I look for from it is either entertainment (movie clips), or facts. One thing that will drive me away from a video is one that has too much filler. YT videos can make more money if they are longer than 7-10 minutes, which means creators like to pad their videos with a lot unnecessary talking. Do that, and I am gone quickly.
c. What content keeps your attention most on social media, and for how long? Usually science information or military facts, for as long as it takes me to eat dinner. Plus about 10 minutes for clips of a good movie.

Hard to get MORE viral than this. Three men decided to dump a bucket of ice water over themselves, and challenge others to do that same, to raise money for ALS. More than 17 MILLION people participated, and raised $115M. You had politicians, common people, and even Bill Gates--the world's richest man at the time--get involved. This was grass roots and viral at its best.

Sorry if I am posting too much, but I am digging deep into LI this weekend and am finding GOBS of stuff about it, for it, and from it. This one is actually an AI package that will take your selfie shot and turn it into a professional headshot. My advice? Go use the free UT service. It will build your confidence to know you didn't need to catfish your headshot. (But know this is there if you need it!) #6-5 Wildcard

A bit of advice if you are posting links. Tumblr will not automatically convert a web URL to a link--it expects you to do that by highlighting the link and building it, or select a link as what you are about to input:
Tumblr media
If you don't specify it as a link, people won't be able to click on it and follow it, thus cutting the number of people who follow it. Bad example: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrell-m-crosgrove/ Good example: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrell-m-crosgrove/ You can't count on anyone to copy the URL you have given and paste into the web address. Always build the link, and test it after you post your message if you want people to follow the link.

#5-1: Obviously, the main takeaway is that people need to be very, very careful about what they post on any Social Media, as it goes into a potentially permanent record where anything salacious *will* be taken out of context.  For myself, what that means is I have to be careful not to say something sarcastic and flip, because it is possible for someone to interpret what I have said incorrectly. As such, it is critical to always make sure I am giving context to anything I say which could be taken incorrectly. For example… Bad: Other person: “No one wants to pay their taxes! I bet you cheat on your taxes!” My reply: “Yeah, I cheat on my taxes. Right.” Better: Other person: “No one wants to pay their taxes! I bet you cheat on your taxes!” My reply: “Like the vast majority of people, I loathe paying taxes. But just like the majority of people, I pay my taxes because it is required by law.”

#5-1 Wildcard Sigh... Sometimes I actually feel like I am watching it all crash and burn. I can't stand X, and FB is getting to be bad with all their "Parody" and AI posts.... But the worst part are the insane rants of our "leaders" that are no longer held accountable for their hate/stupidity.

Wow, I've updated this and it still has cobwebs on it.
Having said that, I think I want to update its focus more towards finding other co-authors for papers, and less towards finding employment. The research we do always churns out way more data than the handful of us can write papers on, so finding co-authors would permit us to disseminate more of our findings.
I did update my publications list, and added my most recent CITI Certification. I need to update the banner picture though--it is from 2016.

#4-Wildcard #2. I had to do a second wildcard when I discovered this man's YT channel last night. This Aussie plumber has a YT channel devoted to his business of unclogging *difficult* clogs. On his off days, he will drive around and unclog public drains for free, and post the videos on YT. This one video has produced over 2 million views. He has 190K subscribers. Yes, he spent 30 minutes of his time doing charity work unclogging the drain for free. And YouTube paid him somewhere between $3,400 and $6,000 for the views this one video has generated so far. So this one free act he did to clear one drain yielded him... say $4,000 approximately, and leads people to watch his other drain unclogging videos. Figure then that this single act of public good has probably yielded him between $8,000 and $12,000 because of the fact it funneled people to watch his other videos and subscribe. Now, of note: He has the gift of gab. He talks through the video and is positive and upbeat and instead of complaining about his dirty, smelly job, he brags about how much he loves his work! He speaks about how he has the best job on the planet, and it beats being in an office "on a spinny chair". He is entertaining, and we are happy when he finally beats the clog. He takes us along on his adventure, and we get a sense of satisfaction when the clog is busted! And I have no doubt that his paying customers enjoy the fact that they are getting the services of a premium plumber and secretly hope that their drain problem appears on his channel. His YT channel sells his services, and generates a sum each year that is probably equal to, or surpasses, his day job as a plumber. And, yes, he is also on Facebook. And TikTok. And Instagram. And Twitter. All of them bring him new customers, and some of them earn him additional income streams. Not a bad marketing strategy!

#4-3: I have no idea what role SM will play because, well, I am at the point where my future ideal career is some part-time side hustle I enjoy doing, and I have yet to find it. I mean, I really have no idea what I want to do. Having said that, I am a little troubled by the fact that AI is now considered to be a major—if inevitable—corruption of Social Media. I’ve seen estimates that roughly 40% of SM content is AI generated, and that is expected to go up to between 48% by 2026
https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240715761320/en/Nearly-Half-of-All-Social-Media-Content-Created-by-Businesses-Will-Be-AI-Generated-by-2026
to perhaps 90% of SM posts will be AI generated:
https://thelivinglib.org/experts-90-of-online-content-will-be-ai-generated-by-2026/
And if that seems unrealistic, consider that AI influencers are already normal and being marketed:
That means Social Media is rapidly on its way to being controlled by the same people who make hundreds of millions a day off algorithms they write to predict and engage in micro-transactions in the stock market.
In short, the people who write the bots will ultimately take control of Social Media content creation, eliminating the need for unreliable humans to generate content.

#4-Wildcard Oh, the irony.... I don't know if it is X still calling itself Twitter, or Tumblr ignoring the name change over a year after it happened, but either way, I had to use this for my wildcard when I saw it!

#4-1. I went with option #2, and fortunately, a Tony Robbins clip popped on on X, so I took it as kismet and ran with it :) The probability of him contacting me is pretty much equal to Santa bringing me a pony this year, but if you are going to strive, strive for the top :)
