Welcome: This page will contain some extremely graphic material. If you are not 18+ you should not be here. DominaceOne, was an accident. The world’s oldest known wild bird, a Laysan albatross that is at least 68 years old, has laid another egg.
Wisdom, who returns each year to Midway Atoll to nest, was sighted back at her favorite nest site in late November, and biologists at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge have now confirmed she’s brooding.
The remarkable albatross is believed to have laid nearly 40 eggs over the course of her life, although it’s impossible to know the precise number.
She has single-wingedly transformed scientists’ understanding of albatross lifespans and the age limits on avian reproduction. The bird is “a world renowned symbol of hope for all species that depend upon the health of the ocean to survive,” according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
Wisdom is not just continuing to procreate — she’s doing it at an impressive clip, too. Many albatrosses take a year off between eggs, because the process of laying and incubating an egg is so energy-intensive.
But every year since 2006, Wisdom and her current mate, Akeakamai, have laid an egg at the same nest in Midway Atoll.
When not raising their young there, Wisdom and Akeakamai are world travelers. Albatrosses are renowned long-distance fliers, capable of soaring thousands of miles without even flapping their massive wings, more than 6 feet across.

FACT CHECK: Who Gets Credit For The Booming U.S. Economy?
The U.S. economy is chugging along. Employers added 201,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate held steady at a low, 3.9 percent. Average wages in August were nearly 3 percent higher than they were a year ago.
Who should get the credit for that strong performance?
At a campaign rally in North Dakota last week, President Trump boasted that he’s responsible for the economy taking off like a “rocket ship.”
But Trump’s predecessor wants to remind everyone that the countdown began on his watch.
“When you hear how great the economy is doing right now, let’s just remember when this recovery started,” former President Barack Obama told supporters Friday at the University of Illinois.
This is not just a question of bragging rights. With midterm elections less than two months away, voters’ impressions of who deserves credit for the boom could influence which political party they support in November.
Let’s stipulate that presidents of both parties often get more credit and blame for economic conditions than they deserve, given that much of what happens is outside their control. But setting that aside, is Trump simply coasting on the momentum of an already strong Obama economy? Or have things turned around on his watch?

What You Need To Know About The 25th Amendment
Another surreal twist in the midst of another frenetic week has brought an unexpected question to the top of the conversation in Washington, D.C.
What is the 25th Amendment?
The short answer: It’s a way, other than impeachment, provided by the Constitution for power to be taken away from a sitting president.
The long answer: The law provided an answer to painful questions posed by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The Constitution is clear that if a president dies or is killed, the vice president takes over.
But what happens if a president is grievously wounded? What if he or she is mentally incapacitated and can’t continue doing the job responsibly?
“There was no legal way for the duties of the office to be discharged by anybody else, so the government would be paralyzed,” as writer Evan Osnos told NPR’s Terry Gross in an interview last year.
So the nation adopted the 25th Amendment, which was introduced in 1965 and ultimately ratified two years later. The text of the amendment is available here from the National Archives.
What the amendment spells out is a procedure by which members of the Cabinet can agree to notify Congress that they do not believe a president can carry out his or her duties. The officials could send a letter to Congress explaining why and, if Congress agrees by a two-thirds vote of both chambers, lawmakers could make the vice president “Acting President,” under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment.

When you are dying, make sure they take you to a hospital that is in your network. Sarcasm.
Tumblr media
Drew Calver took out his trash cans and then waved goodbye to his wife, Erin, as she left for the grocery store the morning that upended his picture-perfect life.
Minutes later, the popular high school history teacher and swim coach in Austin, Texas, collapsed in his bedroom from a heart attack. He pounded his fist on the bed frame, violent chest pains pinning him to the floor.
“I thought I was dying,” the 44-year-old father recalled. He called out to the only other person in the house, his oldest daughter, Eleanor, now 7. Using the voice-recognition feature on his phone, he texted his wife, who was at the store with their youngest, Emory, now 6. A neighbor rushed him to the nearby emergency room at St. David’s Medical Center on April 2, 2017.
The ER doctors confirmed the damage to Calver’s heart and admitted him to the hospital’s cardiac unit. The next day, doctors implanted stents in his clogged “widow-maker” artery.
The heart attack was a shock for Calver, an avid swimmer who had competed in an Ironman triathlon just five months before.
Despite the surprise, Calver asked from his hospital bed whether his health insurance would cover all of this, a financial worry that accompanies nearly every American hospital stay. He was concerned because St. David’s is out-of-network on his school district health plan. The hospital told him not to worry and that they would accept his insurance, Calver said.
The hospital charged $164,941 for his surgery and four days in the hospital. Aetna, which administers health benefits for the Austin Independent School District, paid the hospital $55,840, records show. Despite the difference of more than $100,000, with the hospital’s prior assurance, Calver believed he would not bear much, if any, out-of-pocket payment for his life-threatening emergency and the surgery that saved him.
And then the bills came.
Patient: Drew Calver, 44, a high school history teacher and father of two in Austin, Texas.
Total bill: $164,941 for a four-day hospital stay, including $42,944 for four stents and $10,920 for room charges. Calver’s insurer paid $55,840. The hospital billed Calver for the unpaid balance of $108,951.31.

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully you leave something good behind.” Anthony Bourdain ( June 25th 1956 - June 8th 2018 )
