Ok, I've been overwhelmed by irl stuff so there was a delay, but now I feel prepared to give my thoughts on part 2 of season 2:
I like that they brought Noggin back, though that wasn't really a surprise given that we got those screenshots of him in it. If I'm being completely honest, that's about all I liked about the second half of season 2...
Oh yeah, and that Greta reference in the last episode, that was fun!
But in all seriousness, I was a bit disappointed by the second half of season 2 for two reasons. The first one being Gizmo and his "gremlin moments" literally not getting an explanation AT ALL. Literally, the only reason he was turning evil was just so he could help out in the final fight and use his powers for good, it was never expanded upon in and interesting way like "oh mogwai who spend a specific amount of time outside of the valley of jade turn bad and you have to do x y and z or else they'll just turn into a gremlin eventually" or something else interesting. But no, he just spawns a bunch of gremlins for the last episode and then miraculously, he's all good now. I really thought that was leading up to something interesting. I know the first season was called "Secrets of the Mogwai" and this one was called "The Wild Batch" but I really thought Gizmo's freak outs would have revealed some kind of big secret about the mogwai that the movie's never showed us but nope. And I'm really disappointed in that!
The other thing I'm disappointed in was the lack of gremlins in the second half! I know Noggin got a lot of screen time in the first half of season 2 but the show is literally titled "Gremlins" and is based off of the movies. To tell y'all the truth, I'm frankly not too terribly interested in the human characters, except for Elle. She's legit the only human character I think I actually enjoy watching (her and Greene though he's dead now so...) but everyone else is just kinda..meh. The first season wasn't so bad, like you know going in it was a kid's show, but it had it's mature moments. But this season REALLY felt like a children's show, it lacked a lot of the darker moments that the first season had and felt a bit more dummed down for the sake of making it more kid friendly, which I don't think works very well for a gremlins series. First and foremost, give the gremlins and mogwai the majority of the spotlight, add in some other monsters sure, that's fine, but it's odd that they get sidelined in a show that's literally NAMED after them. And second, if they were gonna make a gremlins series, they should've made it more for teens or young adults, the movies are horror comedies, and I feel like gremlins as a franchise works best when it's both of these. I feel like what we've got now is striving for comedy, and ONLY comedy (not even adult comedy at that it's definitely for kids and kids only) and seems to have neglected the darker aspects that made the movies work so well.
With all that being said, I still enjoyed the first season. Feels like they went in the opposite direction for season 2 is all.
Sorry for the long rant but yeah, those were my feelings on it!

How the rules for the Mogwai and Gremlins work in my Gremlins AU:
(Plus I go into more detail about the little known fourth rule...)
Alright, here's a sneak peek into the world of my Gremlins AU by expanding on the rules. Keep in mind, the only two that are really different are the second (never get them wet with water) and the fourth (if you eat a mogwai you'll live forever), the first and third rules are pretty much the same since I liked how both the show and the movies handled them.
I really just wanted to write this all out as an excuse to expand on second rule, since I never liked the idea of mogwai and gremlins multiplying with water as a way of reproducing. I'm cringe, sorry (not sorry!) and want to ship some of the characters and in order to do that in this AU, I can't have any of the mogwai be related to one another, so this is how I got around that. I also love all the gremlins characters and wanted to write a work around for them coming back, I never liked the idea of them dying in one piece of media and never returning for future installments. I also wanted to expand on the fourth rule which you can read more about below:
In ancient China, the sibling gods of creation Nuwa and Fuxi created the Mogwai as a test of humanity's morality. Nuwa created the first initial mogwai; Gizmo, who was originally the only “good” one and the most pure. Fuxi made the rules. He also made many more mogwai in secret, knowing that if humans disobeyed the rule of getting Gizmo wet, they would be spawned from him. He also cursed these mogwai so that if humans fed them when the moon is at its highest point in the sky, they would turn into the evil, corrupted versions of themselves. The losing god of the bet would have to quit creating life forever.
As for the rules, the first was to never feed them after a certain point when the moon is at its highest point in the sky, or the mogwai would transform into a corrupted form of themselves. Fuxi cursed the mogwai to be destructive tricksters for the first century of their lives. As they spend more time on Earth, their destructive and evil urges will begin to fade, until eventually they will no longer be compelled by these urges to cause harm and destruction.
Mogwai are not the “baby version” of a corrupted mogwai. The metamorphosis simply gives the mogwai more strength and dexterity than they would have had while in their previous form. It also provides protection from other creatures (and humans), as eating a furry mogwai supposedly grants immortality, but eating a scaly one has no affect. Their corrupted form also allows evil mogwai to gain different powers and abilities, and makes it easier for them to give into their destructive instincts.
The second rule, never get them wet with water, is a bit more complicated. There’s a lot more to it than the other rules. Mogwai are said to “multiply” with water, but the more proper term would be to “spawn” more of their kind. They can spawn a lot of other mogwai, but they can’t just keep spawing more and more indefinitely, there is a limit. Fuxi had made a lot of corrupted mogwai, but he did not want to make an infinite amount and have things get too out of hand, though the exact number he created is unknown. They are able to reproduce sexually (Fuxi made sure none of them were related to one another, unlike Nuwa who wanted to make a creature just for one test, Fuxi intended his evil mogwai to live on and prosper if they so desired), though given how intense their chaotic and destructive instincts are, most have little desire to do so during the first couple decades of their lives. Some may want to be in a romantic relationship or form friendships with one another, though like mentioned before, this isn’t common and most of Claw’s batch don’t have much in terms of self preservation during the first couple years of their lives.
Since Fuxi disliked humans so much, he wanted to try his hand at making a better species. This is why he put so much work and care into making the corrupted mogwai. Not only was the test doomed from the start given the humans greed in wanting more mogwai, but Fuxi was hoping his corrupted mogwai would take over and essentially replace all humans in the process.
Fuxi had a feeling Nuwa would eliminate his evil mogwai the moment she saw them, so he made sure that his creations could be reincarnated. When they die, their souls leave this mortal world and lie dormant within another realm (sort of like purgatory) until a living mogwai is exposed to water. If you want to summon a corrupted mogwai that has died, just add water to a living one. The living mogwai will continue to spawn more and more mogwai until there are no more left to spawn and each one from that specific batch is alive on Earth (remember there is a limit). After all mogwai have been summoned, they can touch and drink water like normal with no affects. Also, the order in which mogwai spawn is completely random. Fuxi made nearly every aspect of them chaotic and random, so if you want a specific mogwai reincarnated and it just died for some reason, there’s a high probability you won’t get it back right away, unless it was the only one that perished from that batch.
Mogwai’s souls are essentially tied to a certain leader and the batch they’re from. The only two batch’s of evil mogwai are Claw’s batch and Stripe’s batch. Evil mogwai can only spawn mogwai from their own batch. For example, Claw can’t spawn any mogwai from Stripe’s batch and vice versa. If all evil mogwai perish, then Gizmo is the only one who can spawn any evil mogwai, as he is obviously the only one left. Gizmo spawns each batch one at a time, so for example, he spawned some of Stripe’s batch in the events of the first Gremlins movie, and they all perished soon after. Then years later during the events of the second movie, since he had already triggered Stripe’s batch to spawn, he spawned Claw’s batch next. This explains why the evil mogwai and gremlins look so different to each other and have different personalities in both of the movies.
Evil mogwai can be reincarnated, though similar to the limit in how many mogwai can be spawned from a specific batch, the mogwai have a limit to how many times they can be reincarnated. Think of it like lives in a video game, if you have three lives and you use all of them up it’s game over. Evil mogwai only have a certain amout of “lives” and once they’ve used them all up, they die permanently and cannot be spawned again. The number of “lives” evil mogwai have is dictated by the markings on their bodies. Stripe’s batch has mostly stripes and a couple of spots on the backs of their ears. Claw’s batch varies wildly in markings, some may have only spots or only stripes and some have a mix of both, though regardless, all started out with the same number of markings. Whatever markings an evil mogwai has determines the number of times they can be reincarnated. Everytime an evil mogwai dies, whenever they are spawned again, one of their markings will be gone. Fuxi knew that by making them so destructive, the mogwai would be very accident prone and ensured that they’d get lots more chances at life.
Mogwai can only spawn more of their kind when exposed to water in it’s liquid form. It can’t go from frozen (ice, snow) and melt on them causing more to spawn, and things like mist in the air has no effect either. Water doesn’t have to be in it’s purest form for it to work, other substances can be mixed in for it to have an effect, but it has to already be in liquid form for it to do so. Also, once a mogwai has reached it’s limit for how many it can spawn, liquids no longer have any affect on them. They can drink, bathe, and swim and they won’t spawn any more once they’ve reached their limit.
The third rule: never expose the mogwai to bright lights or sunlight. Bright lights cause excruciating pain to mogwai. When bright light is shined in their eyes, it causes them an immense stinging pain that still remains for a few minutes even after the bright light is no longer shining on them. Mogwai are extremely sensitive to all forms of light and it is perceived more intensely than the way we perceive it. Though painful, bright light can never kill a mogwai, just cause intense pain and stun them for a while. Sunglasses, goggles, etc. do nothing to remedy this, though it is possible to provide them some relief through rare magical means and items. As for sunlight, it kills mogwai if they are in direct contact with it. Sunlight must be shining directly onto them for it to be lethal, that means screens, curtains, clouds, etc. in front of the sun is enough to protect them. Protective clothing worn by mogwai and umbrellas being carried that cover them completely can provide the necessary protection. However, mogwai are naturally nocturnal and can see perfectly clear in the dark, so there is little reason for them to be out during the day unless by accident or an emergency.
The little known fourth and final rule: eating a furry mogwai will make you live forever is actually a lie. Think about it, Fuxi despises humans, why would he ever make it so that one could live forever by eating one of his creations? And Nuwa loved Gizmo so much, she’d never give humans a reason to eat him. So what really happens when you eat a Mogwai? Fuxi thought it would be funny to prey on humans greed and lust for power, so he spread the rumor around that eating a mogwai would grant one immortality so they’d have a reason to seek the mogwai out. But as a cruel punishment, Fuxi made it so that when one eats a mogwai, they transform into one. The process takes a while, and if one dies or is killed before this transformation can take place, then they are eventually spawned whenever a mogwai gets wet. This was the case with Stripe, though that’s a whole other story I’ll write about later…
Humanity ultimately became greedy about the mogwai and broke the rule to make more of them, and the other rules soon followed. This spawned a wave of corrupted mogwai that laid waste to Fengdong and many people died. Before the rest of China could fall, Nuwa stopped the test and intervened, reverting all the gremlins back into mogwai and hid them in the Valley of Jade.

Boy I sure would love to post about my Gremlins AU one of these days that's been bouncing around in my head forever. If only it wasn't unnecessarily complicated and partially unfinished, then I could post about it in it's entirety, oh well. :/
I think I'm just gonna have to start sharing tiny bits of it here and there, otherwise it'll never get out of my brain lol.

It's official this time... Warner Bros. is FINALLY getting around to making another Gremlins movie, and honestly I'm both excited and nervous. Excited for obvious reasons but nervous because, well, there just haven't been a lot of good horror movies lately and the one's that do come out all look the same. They all have that "look" to them. That and they just haven't been all that scary or interesting in my opinion. I hope they don't miss the mark on Gremlins 3 and make it super generic. That and I must say, while I do love the Gremlins animated series and am happy it came out, ideally I would have liked something a bit more aimed at adults rather than a children's show. I hope that if they make another movie, it's actually pretty violent and mature, and I hope it also focuses on the gremlins a lot more than the human characters. I think I've mentioned this in a previous post but I honestly think that the gremlins franchise as a whole would benefit a bit better focusing on the gremlins and giving them actual personalities (i.e. Gremlins 2) and having them reincarnate during each iteration, whether that be a movie or a show. Idk, maybe that's just me and what I'd like but I think the franchise might be more captivating as a whole taken in that direction. Super violent, keeping the dark comedy, while focusing more on the gremlins than human characters. Ok I'm done rambling.
#Oh and of course the movie has got to have puppets I won't except any gremlins media unless it's got puppets or it's animated#gremlins#gremlins 2#gremlins secrets of the mogwai#gremlins the wild batch

Sorry I haven't been too active on here, I ran out of things I wanted to post about the gremlins franchise. This blog isn't dead, don't worry, I just wanted to drop in and vent about how long it's taking for the rest of season 2 to come out. 😭
