Kaylee giggled again at that and raised her eyebrows in Zoe's direction in an interested manner. "Oh? What happens if you win?" She asked, hopping to her feet and turning to check Serenity's engine.Â

âFair enough,â Zoe winked, allowing a hardy chuckle to follow. God she missed joking with her crew. During the tougher times she forgot what it was like to share a good laugh with Kaylee and the rest. âAnd you donât even know what happens if I win.â

Kaylee glanced over her shoulder, weighing the merits of running back to the engine room and locking the door, then contacting the Captain from in there. 'Cause she couldn't get through the kitchen to the bunks, no way. She didn't much enjoy recalling the last time there had been a stranger on Serenity. Why was the woman smiling? Again, Kaylee thought of bolting back to the engine room, but she was pretty sure the woman could get a shot off long before Kaylee could turn around. She stepped slowy into the room. "How'd you get on board? I don't recall stoppin' t' pick up passengers."Â
Gen bit into a clementine slice, eyes closed to savor the absolute pure burst of flavor, until she sensed an obstruction. Something had moved into the way of the oxygen flow and had not moved once again. Five foot Five.. Young.. staring. She opened her eyes, looking up at the woman with a smile. âCome on, then.. take a seat. I got an entire bag of these.. Want one?â She reached under the table, fingers gracing her pistol for a moment before continuing on to the bag, raising it up for the girl to see. âI promise they ainât poisoned.. or at least I hope they ainât.. I had at least five..â She dropped the bag on the table, pulling her knife out and laying it to rest, so she could peel them on her own. âGenesis. Nice to meet ya.â

Kaylee watched as Wash spun on his chair. She needed a chair that spun like that. Not sure what she'd do with it, but it'd be fun. Neither her bunk nor the engine room had any extra room for it though and they didn't exactly have the money. "I like the sun," She said, "But too much of it ain't so fun an' it don't compare none to flyin' around the verse, meeting new people and getting into all kinds 'a trouble."

Wash nodded. âGood to hear. Gotta say, itâs always kind of a toss up with this girl. Not sure where weâd be without you.â He chuckled, swiveling his chair to face her better. âNo. I do know where weâd be. Stuck on some god awful rock somewhere with only Bester to keep her in the air. Weâd all have to take up farming! And I donât really do too well in the sunâŚâ

Two months was a fairly long time, but making a move on Simon just so Zoe could win a bet...it wasn't without risk. It wasn't without merit either. She cracked a grin at Zoe's words though. "I don't think it'll be his ego inflatin' if you're naked on the bridge."Â
zoe-alleynewashburne found you a'tinkerin'
âI got another two months before Wash gets gloating rights,â Zoe winked at Kaylee. The girlâs face had a new helping of engine grease smudged across her cheek and forehead. Zoe didnât point it out, wouldnât be Kaylee without Serenityâs loving mark on her. âTrust me, that manâs ego doesnât need to be inflated any more than it already is.â

Serenity was...well, unhappy wasn't the word, but she'd seemed sort adverse ta lettin' Kaylee leave the engine room to go to her bunk, so the engineer had drifted off to sleep in her hammock, lulled by the sound of Serenity's engine. She'd woken up via rolling out of said hammock onto the floor and wincing. She imagined Serenity was laughing at her, but not in a mean way. She checked the engine as one would check the forehead of a sick child and then slid out of the engine room and towards the kitchen. She paused, hearing a humming. A woman humming. She rounded the corner, expecting to find Zoe, Inara or River but instead finding a stranger. She froze in the doorway, stunned.Â
Genesis sat at the dining room table, a fresh clementine in hand, peeling it with her pocket knife and humming along to a spiritual she had heard a few  planets back. She had been enjoying her stay on the ship, stowing away was a fun little journey.. but sneaking to the kitchen in the dead of night to eat was actually one of the best parts. She liked the intrigue, the mystery.. and of course.. pilfering the food.

Kaylee couldn't help but giggle as she fixed the last blot into place and slid out form under the engine, wiping her oily hands on a rag and peering up at Zoe. "An', hypothetically, how long have I got afore you lose this bet?" Of course they'd be betting for that kind of thing, there was no sense in betting for money when you shared everything anyway. Kaylee couldn't help but grin slightly at the thought of Mal's reaction to that particular bet.Â

Zoe chuckled. âNow thatâs between me and my husband. Got a strict confidence policy about the talks we have in our bunk.â This was a good moment, inbetween jobs, flying through the Black, and actually having the time to talk to Kaylee. Zoe genuinely adored the girl, but then again who couldnât? Probably the most likable girl in the âverse. âBut I will say this. The bridge is awful cold when you got no clothes on.â

Kaylee paused, pensively, her hand rummaging around for the bolts to fix the fuse back into place. Zoe was right. Zoe was almost always right. "There ain't nothin' to fix, Zoe. It ain't broke." It just...wasn't quite living up to its full potential yet. If it was an engine, she could find ways to fix that no problem, but she just wasn't that good with people. Especially not people like Simon who was accustomed to having women from the core fall all over him most likely. "What's the bet?"Â
zoe-alleynewashburne found you a'tinkerin'
âYouâre plenty good at fixing things, Kaylee.â Zoe leaned forward, making sure the girl could hear. âYou can fix that, too.â She leaned back again, taking a seat on the cold ground of the engine room. âOne of youâs gotta a make a move one of these days. Wash and I got ourselves a bet going. You donât want me to lose, now do you?â

Kaylee was glad she was hidden under Serenity's engine, her face flushed and she bit her lip, but she didn't break in her work. "There ain't nothin' to be said there that you don't already know," she told the warrior woman, dislodging the rattling fuse and switching it out for a new one.Â
zoe-alleynewashburne found you a'tinkerin'
âWhat about that relationship you got with the doctor?â Zoe allowed a smirk to cross her face. She and Wash had taken recently to casually egging Kaylee on about her feelings. Takes one love sick woman to know one, although Kayleeâs feelings had manifested in a much different manner than Zoeâs had. âYou got a good thing going there too?â

Kaylee smiled more as she leaned inside of Serenity's engine and began to undo one of the bolts holding the fuse in place. "She lets me know what's ailin' her and I fix it, we've got a good relationship."Â
zoe-alleynewashburne found you a'tinkerin'
Zoe gave a good natured laugh. âI donât doubt that one bit.â She smiled down as the girlâs head and hands disappeared inside the workings of Serenity. âItâs a marvel how you and she get along.â

Kaylee took it from her with a smile, "Aw, it ain't nothin' much, just a loose fuse nigglin' at her insides. I can fix her right up, though."

zoe-alleynewashburne found you a'tinkerin'
âSure thing, Kaylee.â Zoe passed over the wrench to the girl. âWhatâs Serenity complaining about this time?â
