The office’s warm candle lights escaped through the slits of the door, illuminating the small corridor and Nova’s face. Of course that Vesper was still awake even when the entire city was already sleeping. What she was working on so avidly on that night, that the young catcher didn’t know, and maybe, just for tonight, she would care.
Maybe just for tonight she could pretend to just be a normal catcher currently staying under the same roof as the subject of all her dreams and simply pretend her nightmares didn’t exist.
She gently pushed the door open, not bothering to knock. The older woman immediately gave a side smile when she saw the brunette, closing the book she had been immersed in just a couple of seconds before. Even if Nova wanted to learn what the blonde was into, Vesper clearly didn’t want to let that happen. And just for tonight, she would be able to get just that.
-What are you doing up so late?
-I just went to drink a glass of water. The question is why are you awake? You’re going to end up blind reading at such a late hour.
The blonde witch smiled, getting up from her chair and walking around her desk, resting her thighs against it when she was standing against the front of the desk and offering her hand to the brunette. Nova was immediately pulled towards her. To her touch. To her presence. To the satisfaction that only being close to Vesper could bring her.
But instead of holding Nova’s hand, as the younger witch expected to happen when they got close enough, Vesper’s hand reached for the catcher’s face, cupping her cheek and slowly rubbing Nova’s undereye with her thumb. And although the young witch tried her hardest not to look or to feel pathetic, she immediately leaned into the touch, almost sighing in relief. Almost as if the only thing that could bring her relief was the other woman’s touch.
-You look very tired, did you overuse your presence again?
The catcher simply nodded, closing her eyes to avoid seeing the displease on Vesper’s eyes and leaned further into the touch. At that moment, she was acting so much like a cat, almost begging for affection, that her choice for a familiar made a lot of sense. When she opened her eyes again, Vesper’s eyes were still on her, a hint of affection, almost of softness, filled them and the older witch had a small smile adorning her lips.
-I was considering going for a cup of tea. Would you care to join me?
The hand left her face when Nova nodded again. But even before she could miss the touch, Vesper’s hand was on hers, their fingers immediately intertwined as the roots of a tree, as ivies over the stone of a house, as their lives forever would be.
Their way to the kitchen was a short one, too short even. The house wasn’t a manor, and Nova knew that, but the fact that Vesper let go of her hand as soon as they got into the kitchen made an unsettling feeling of emptiness fill her chest, one that she had no idea of how to get rid of.
She really needed to go to bed.
-You know that I can’t make tea while holding you, just sit down. You’re looking like a puppy in the rain.
Nova could feel the smile on Vesper’s lips even though the blonde was looking at the stove in front of her. That voice, the smile on it. That was what, in the end, was capable of getting rid of the emptiness. It was enough for it. It was more than enough to make the warmth come back to Nova.
She complied to Vesper’s order, as she always did, as she never should have, slowly sitting down in the chair on the small island of the kitchen, as close as she could get from the older woman without being on the way or being too oblivious.
But she knew. She knew that Vesper had noticed the closeness. She knew that she should stop, stop this nonsense, stop this longingness, those feelings. She knew she should stop them because Vesper had no reason to.

She knew she wouldn’t.
So she watched carefully as Vesper brewed the chamomile tea, wondering what would happen if she simply got up and walked towards the witch, lacing her hands around her waist and resting her head against Vesper’s shoulder.
And when the cup of tea was placed right in front of her and the woman sat down on her side with a smile on her face, Nora wondered if after everything was figured out, after everything was said and done, that smile would still shine towards her. She wondered if it was worth giving up on everything to be sure that it would.
And when the tea was finished and the cups washed and Vesper’s hand was on hers again and leading the catcher to her room, Nova decided that wondering wasn’t for her.
All her troubles and uncertainties wouldn’t leave her because she would soon enough be asleep. Even if she was brave enough to actually give up everything to keep the warm touch on her hand, her troubles wouldn’t disappear, they would just shift into new ones. New ones that she had no idea of how to solve, just as the ones she currently had.
So when they stopped in front of Nova’s bedroom and their lips finally touched, the only thing on the young catcher’s mind was how soft Vesper’s lips were.

this is just a guess, but i think some rc fans have trouble grasping stories within their respective context. you know this story is leading up to something, i know this story is leading up to something, but the characters don't (or their view differs from what we consider the norm) and that's kind of the point 😭 maybe they're not dumb, annoying, or overdramatic. maybe it's actually how someone would realistically act when placed in those circumstances and you don't want to believe it for whatever reason
